Involving children: tasks that suit their age

Taking part instead of watching

Unsere Firma Professional on-site moving solutions with secure planning, flexible services and on-time execution.

A move with children feels different for the little ones than for adults: they lose their room, their familiar routes, often friends too – and they decide none of it themselves. If you involve children early, you give them back a bit of control. It does not have to be anything big: packing their own box, helping to choose the colour for the new room, walking the route to the new school once beforehand. What matters is that the task suits their age and is genuinely needed.

Talk early and honestly about the change of home: why it is happening, when it is and what stays the same. A calendar on which the days until the move are crossed off makes the date tangible. If the family is moving to another city, photos of the new flat or a walk along the street on the map help. How we take care of the move itself can be read under Private move; for long routes under Long-distance moves.

Plan moving day, stay with the children

Fixed price after a survey

The less you have to carry and organise yourself on moving day, the more time is left for your children. After a survey we give you a fixed price for carrying, transport and furniture assembly – on request also for setting up the children's room first. Call us on 01625978461 and tell us straight away when the children are being looked after, so that we can plan the moving schedule around it.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

SAFE ON MOVING DAY

Where children should not be on moving day

Helping yes – but at a distance

On moving day heavy items are carried, doors are open and there is hardly any space in the stairwell. Children can still help – just not everywhere. The stairwell and walkways, the loading area and the lorry's tail lift, as well as rooms where furniture is being dismantled, are off limits for them. A fixed place with its own task is better: counting boxes, guarding the cuddly-toy bag, looking at the new room with an adult. Younger children are often best looked after by grandparents or friends. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and agree the schedule with you in advance; other places can be found under Locations.

Stairwell

Wardrobes and washing machines are carried here. Children on the stairs are dangerous for movers and children alike.

Lorry and tail lift

The loading area, ramp and tail lift are not a playground. Keep children away from the vehicle while it is being loaded.

Tools and knives

Cordless screwdrivers, box cutters and loose screws lie around during furniture dismantling. Rooms where work is going on stay closed.

A fixed place for children

A quiet room with toys, snacks and a carer – children wait there until it is time for their task.
WHO CAN DO WHAT?

Tasks by age

Children often want to help more than you might think – if the task suits them. These six suggestions are a rough guide; you know your child best. What matters is that the task is real and not just something to keep them busy.

01

Toddlers

Painting an empty box, choosing the cuddly toy for the moving bag, watching the books being packed.
02

Nursery age

Putting toys into their own box and marking it with stickers. That way the child recognises their box again in the new flat.
03

Primary school age

Sorting their own things: keep, give away, throw away. The child does the labelling of their own boxes themselves.
04

From about ten

Packing their own room, drawing a plan for the furniture in the new children's room, carrying light boxes to the collection point.
05

Teenagers

Packing their own room completely, helping to dismantle and reassemble their own bed, handling the change of address with clubs.
06

For everyone

A farewell walk through the old neighbourhood and a first exploration tour of the new one – planned together.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Only the children's room is moving?

Shared load for a few pieces of furniture

If a child is moving to the other parent or into their first flat of their own and there is only a little furniture, a shared load can be cheaper than your own lorry. The furniture travels with other jobs on the same route, within an agreed time window.

Everything around your move

Around a family move there are other topics that directly affect children. The order in which the children's room is dismantled and set up again is described in the article Children's Room Last & First. Which documents the new nursery and school need can be read under Registering with a New Nursery & School. If you are moving to another city, you will find tips for the journey in the article Long-Distance Move with Children. What we take care of during the move itself can be read under Private move.

Planning safe and relaxed

A good checklist coordinates dates, helpers and materials early. That way your home move, senior move or student move in Berlin stays transparent, structured and markedly easier to control.

Furniture, boxes, transport routes

With a suitable packing service, careful furniture transport and a flexible small transport, ways can be shortened, damage avoided and even narrow approaches in Berlin managed cleanly in logistical terms.

Costs, timing and special cases

Clear time windows and suitable solutions for an office move, company move, authority move, part load or furniture taxi create reliable processes and better plannable total costs in Berlin.

FAQ

Questions about moving with children

Age, preparation, packing, childcare, saying goodbye and settling in – how to involve children in the move.
Even toddlers can join in playfully, for example by painting boxes or choosing the cuddly toy for the moving bag. From school age, children can sort their own things and take part in planning the move. Choose tasks the child can manage and that are genuinely needed – then they feel neither overwhelmed nor underchallenged.

Actively involving children in planning the move

Depending on their age, children can be involved in the moving process in different ways. Toddlers enjoy colourful boxes to paint, older children sort and pack their things themselves. What matters is that the task is real: a box the child has packed and labelled themselves should also be one of the first to be opened in the new room.

A joint packing session with music and small rewards turns a chore into something shared. Let older children write a list for the new room – what goes where, what should be new? That way organisational stress becomes a family project in which everyone is responsible for a part.

Moving day: accompanying children safely and calmly

On the actual moving day, childcare for younger children makes sense so that you can concentrate on coordinating with the moving team. Older children can be involved, for example counting boxes or arranging their room – but not in the stairwell, on the loading area or where furniture is being dismantled.

A familiar cuddly toy or a favourite game belongs in a separate bag that stays with the child and does not go into the lorry. If the children's room is set up first, your child has their bed and belongings on the very first evening. Tell us during planning, and we will load the children's room furniture so that it comes out first.

Fair prices for every move

Whether a small 1-room flat or a large family home – our prices are fairly calculated. Prices start at €365 for 1 room, from €589 for 2 rooms, from €909 for 3 rooms and from €1,329 for 4 rooms. For houses and villas we prepare a suitable individual quote. If you are moving further away, a price from €3.85 per kilometre applies for the long-distance move. The easiest way to clarify all the details is during a free survey.

Calculating moving costs: this is what matters

For the calculation, volume and distance (from €3.85/km) count first and foremost. Then come the floor, lift and, if necessary, a parking restriction zone. If you also need furniture assembly or a shared load, you should say so early.
