Moving with assembly: how to recognise a complete quote

What to look out for

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and writes down before the move which furniture will be dismantled and reassembled.

Whether a move with assembly goes well often shows in the quote already. A complete quote names not just a price but also the service behind it: which furniture will be taken apart and reassembled, whether wall cupboards, shelves or lamps go on the wall, what happens with the kitchen and on which day reassembly takes place at the destination. If it only says “assembly included”, it is unclear on moving day whether that means the wardrobe or the fitted kitchen too. In that case, ask for a list – it protects both sides from misunderstandings and is the basis for a real fixed price.

The second point to check is liability. A removal company is liable for damage to your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of cargo space. If the customer is a consumer, the company must point out these liability rules and the option of further insurance when the contract is concluded – clearly highlighted in print (§ 451g HGB). If this notice is missing, the company cannot rely on the limitation. What we take on for assembly is on the page move with assembly.

CHECKLIST

Four points that should be in the quote

Before you sign

We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and, for a move with assembly, take care of dismantling, transport and reassembly. You should check a quote – ours as well as any other firm's – on four points. The more precise it is, the less has to be negotiated on moving day. We are liable for damage to your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of cargo space; for expensive furniture, additional insurance makes sense.

Furniture list

Which furniture will be taken apart and reassembled? A list instead of “assembly included” prevents disputes on moving day.

Wall-mounted fittings

Wall cupboards, shelves, TV bracket: whatever is to go on the wall must be in the quote – otherwise it has not been agreed and becomes a point of discussion on moving day.

Kitchen clearly defined

Furniture assembly yes, cooker and gas connection no: that belongs to a qualified electrician or a registered installation company.

Liability notice

A notice on liability and the option of insurance, clearly highlighted – that is what § 451g HGB requires for consumers, otherwise the liability limit does not apply.
LOOK CLOSELY

Six further points to check

You should also check these points for a move with assembly before you agree – they often decide whether the price holds in the end.

01

Survey

A fixed price without looking at the furniture is an estimate. Ask for a survey or at least a check based on photos.
02

Additional costs

Parking restriction, disposal, packing, a second day: does the quote say which of these is included and what costs extra?
03

The firm's address

A legal notice (Impressum) with a full address shows who you are entering into the contract with – and where to report damage if the worst comes to the worst.
04

Reviews

Read reviews on independent platforms and look for texts that describe specific moves with furniture and floors.
05

Reporting damage

On delivery, the company must inform consumers about the form and deadline of the damage notification (§ 451g HGB).
06

Invoice

For § 35a EStG you need an invoice with the labour costs shown separately and must pay by bank transfer – cash payment does not count.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Look just as closely with a shared load

Clarify the time window and reassembly

With a shared load, individual pieces of furniture travel on the same tour as other orders. Make sure that the time window for collection and delivery is stated, and whether reassembly at the destination is included.

How to read a quote properly

A good quote for a move with assembly answers four questions: what will be done, what will not, what does it cost, and who is liable? What a fixed price should cover is explained in the article Moving with assembly at a fixed price. How to take furniture apart yourself is shown in Dismantling and assembling furniture; if you only need assembly, you will find the service under furniture assembly. On tax there is Deducting moving costs from tax.

Service

Check whether every piece of furniture is on the list, whether wall fittings are listed and whether it is clear what is excluded – above all connecting the cooker, hob and gas appliances. If something is missing, ask before you place the order.

Price

A fixed price after a survey is more predictable than an hourly rate. Look out for items such as the parking restriction, disposal or a second day, and for when the price may change – for example only if additional furniture is added.

Liability

By law, €620 per cubic metre of cargo space applies (§ 451e HGB). The quote must clearly point this out to consumers, as well as possible additional insurance (§ 451g HGB). For expensive furniture it is worth asking.

FAQ

Frequent questions

Quote, scope of services, liability and price for a move with assembly – what matters.
By a list of the furniture that will be taken apart and reassembled, listed wall fittings, a clear boundary for the kitchen (no appliance connection by the furniture fitter), the reassembly day and a clearly highlighted notice on liability and insurance. If it only says “assembly included” without a list, ask.

What to look out for in the scope of services

The most important question with a move with assembly is: what exactly will be assembled? A quote should name the furniture that will be taken apart and reassembled – wardrobes, beds, shelving walls, kitchen units. Wall fittings such as wall cupboards, wall shelves or TV brackets should be listed individually, because they take time and require a load-bearing wall. The reassembly day at the destination also belongs in the quote, especially for moves to another city.

Just as important is what is not included. The electric cooker and hob are connected by a qualified electrician; under § 13 NDAV, work on the gas system may only be carried out by the network operator or a registered installation company, and under § 12 AVBWasserV significant changes to the water installation likewise only by registered companies. A reputable quote promises nothing here that a furniture fitter is not allowed to do.

What to look out for with liability and price

Under § 451a HGB, dismantling and reassembly are among the removal company's duties if they have been agreed; liability of €620 per cubic metre of cargo space applies to damage to your furniture (§ 451e HGB). With consumers, the company must clearly highlight these rules and the option of insurance when the contract is concluded, and on delivery must inform them about the form and deadline of the damage notification (§ 451g HGB).

With the price, it is worth looking at the small print: is it a fixed price after a survey or an hourly rate? Are the parking restriction, packing, disposal and a possible second day included? And for tax: the invoice should show the labour costs, because only these count for § 35a EStG.

Assessing the moving price correctly

To assess the moving price correctly, we look at the volume, the distance (from €3.95/km), floor and lift, as well as any parking restriction zone that may be required. Additional services such as furniture assembly and a shared load round off our offer.
