Settling in Freiburg
Freiburg im Breisgau: Green City on the Edge of the Black Forest
– the first few weeks
Freiburg im Breisgau is Germany's southernmost city and had around 238,300 inhabitants at the end of 2025. The city lies on the Dreisam, between the Black Forest and the Upper Rhine Plain; Basel is about 51 km and Strasbourg about 66 km away as the crow flies. With an average temperature of 11.4 °C, Freiburg is one of the warmest cities in the country. Since 2008 the city has marketed itself as a Green City: in 2016 people in Freiburg made around a third of all trips by bike, and the city centre has been a pedestrian zone since the 1970s. For newcomers this means: a lot can be done without a car.
According to Wikipedia, the largest employer is the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, founded in 1457, together with the University Hospital, followed by state and other authorities such as the regional council (Regierungspräsidium). Around the university, smaller companies in solar technology, IT and medical technology have emerged. The housing market is considered tight; the city is therefore building the new district of Dietenbach, where ground was broken in February 2024. We do not quote specific rents – the Freiburg rent index (Mietspiegel) provides guidance. We handle the move from Berlin as a home removal.

Who does what
We have no branch in Freiburg: the lorry sets off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 810 km via the A9, A4 and A5. Beforehand we ask about the floor, lift and access – whether in Stühlinger, Vauban or Herdern. On request we apply in good time to the responsible authority for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) outside the new address. We give you the fixed price after the survey; liability is under § 451e HGB (€620 per m³). You register at the citizens' service centre in the Stühlinger town hall yourself – within two weeks, by appointment. The process is described in detail in our long-distance moving guide for Freiburg.

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Freiburg
Districts in Freiburg: From Stühlinger to Vauban
Freiburg has 28 districts. Stühlinger lies west of the main station; this is also where the town hall with the citizens' service centre is located. The Wiehre and Herdern are among the old settlements already mentioned in 1008; Herdern has its own stop on the Upper Rhine Railway, the Wiehre one on the Höllental Railway. The southern districts of Günterstal and Kappel already lie in the Black Forest.
Weingarten and Landwasser were built in the 1960s, and Rieselfeld and Vauban in the 1990s, the latter on the site of barracks that the French garrison had left in 1992. Vauban is laid out as a largely car-free neighbourhood. How high the rent is in which neighbourhood is shown by the Freiburg rent index; we do not quote figures without a source here.
Getting Around Freiburg: Bike, Tram, Rail and Car
In 2016 cycling accounted for around 34 per cent of all trips. In autumn 2023 the city counted 27 cycle streets and eight priority cycle routes, including the ten-kilometre Dreisam cycle path. The tram connects the districts with the city centre, and the main station lies on four railway lines and is used by around 75,000 people a day. ICE trains run via Karlsruhe to Stuttgart and Munich, and the Breisgau S-Bahn into the surrounding area.
By car you reach Freiburg via the A 5 with the Nord, Mitte and Süd exits, and the B 31 runs right through the city. The city centre is a pedestrian zone, with multi-storey car parks on its edge. If you live in a resident parking zone, you need a permit – more on this in the section on resident parking below.
Prices for your move
Many customers ask themselves: What will my move cost? The answer depends on the size. 4-room flats start from €1,289, 3-room flats from €899. Smaller moves are cheaper: 2 rooms from €599 and 1 room from just €339. Larger properties such as houses or villas always receive an individual quote. For a long-distance move we charge from €4.20 per kilometre. The quickest way to find out your exact price is a free survey.
Volume, distance, floor
The most important factors are the volume of your household goods and the distance to be driven, which we charge from €4.20/km. Added to this are the floor, the lift and a possible parking restriction zone. Furniture assembly and a shared load can also affect the final price.

Registration in Freiburg: Citizens' Service Centre in Stühlinger
Anyone moving to Freiburg must register within two weeks of moving in under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz). For this, the City of Freiburg offers the online service „Wohnsitz anmelden“ (register your residence) on its home page. For matters in person, the citizens' service centre (Bürgerservicezentrum) in the Stühlinger town hall is responsible, Fehrenbachallee 12, 79106 Freiburg. According to the city, an appointment is required there; you book online or by phone on 0761 201 0.
General opening hours according to the city: Mondays 8 am to 1 pm, Tuesdays 8 am to 6 pm, Wednesdays 8 am to 4 pm, Thursdays 8 am to 6 pm and Fridays 8 am to 12:30 pm. The office can be reached by phone Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm. By tram you reach the building on lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 (stop „Rathaus im Stühlinger“); by car, according to the city, access is only possible via Sundgauallee.
The landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) is part of registration. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, it is issued by the landlord or a person authorised by them. It states the name and address of the landlord, the moving-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register. Also bring your ID. For your flat search after the move, take a look at our guide to moving to Freiburg im Breisgau.
Living in Freiburg: Resident Parking, Stühlinger Zones and Rent Index
Parking is strictly regulated in Freiburg. According to the city, resident parking has two types of permit: the green permit (special parking authorisation) for zones based on the separation principle and the blue permit (exemption permit) for zones based on the mixed principle. Since December 2023 a permit for one year has cost 200 euros. Applications are made online; from 20 April 2026 applicants must print the permit themselves. For guests, according to the city, there is a chargeable exemption of up to four weeks per year at 15 euros per week or part thereof, to be applied for in writing at the road traffic office (Straßenverkehrsamt).
In Stühlinger the city has reorganised the zones: according to its website, on 27 October 2026 seven existing zones become two larger ones, Stühlinger-Nord and Stühlinger-Süd, which are also being extended. Check which zone your address is in before moving in. A removal van usually also needs a parking restriction zone.
For rents there is the qualified Freiburg rent index 2025/2026, which according to the city applies from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2026. It shows the monthly net rent excluding heating. You can download it free of charge as a PDF, use it with the online calculator or collect a printed copy for 7.50 euros. The city answers questions about ordering on 0761 201-5302. Waste disposal is organised by Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung Freiburg (ASF), Hermann-Mitsch-Straße 26, telephone 0761 76707-0. More about the city: Moving in Freiburg im Breisgau.
