Moving to Freiburg: Old Town Period Buildings & Furniture Lift

From Berlin to the old town
Moving to Freiburg – old town, period buildings and furniture lift
Guide
Every year Freiburg attracts many students, skilled workers and families. Located between the Black Forest and the Kaiserstuhl, the city scores with a mild climate, short distances and lots of cycling; Basel is around 50 km away. In the historic old town with its minster and Bächle (small streams), parking in the pedestrian zone is prohibited in principle. With Beste Umzug Unternehmen you plan your move to Freiburg at a fixed price after a survey.
Whether you are moving to Wiehre, low-traffic Vauban or green Herdern – in old buildings, the staircase, floor and access determine how things go. We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), plan the parking ban and furniture lift in advance and clarify whether an exemption permit for the pedestrian zone is needed. Information on our services can be found under Private move. For moves from other federal states, take a look at our long-distance moves.

What we handle when you move to Freiburg
Old buildings and old town, planned in advance
We have no branch in Freiburg; instead we come with our lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify steep access roads such as in Günterstal or one-way streets in Stühlinger with you in advance, as well as the staircase, the furniture lift and the delivery times of the pedestrian zone. We quote the fixed price after the survey, with permits and the furniture lift listed as separate items. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of loading space. Further places can be found under Locations.

Everything
for your move
A move to Freiburg brings some particularities with it: a pedestrian zone with delivery times, little parking space, lots of cycling and old buildings without a lift. The tight housing market around the university and university hospital also often requires quick action on the tenancy agreement and moving date. This guide explains the exemption permit, parking ban, furniture lift and the order of steps for a student move. That way you avoid stress and extra costs on moving day.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Freiburg
Districts at a glance: where to live well in Freiburg
Wiehre is considered one of the most popular neighbourhoods: close to the centre, with late-19th-century villas and many old buildings. Low-traffic Vauban, on the site of a former barracks, is known for sustainable living and an active neighbourhood, while Herdern sits on the hillside with views over the city, usually at higher rents.
Living tends to be cheaper in Haslach, Weingarten or Landwasser, with tram connections to the city centre. Young Stühlinger near the main station offers short distances to the university, and Rieselfeld in the west is a newer district that many families move to.
Housing market, rents and employers in Freiburg
Freiburg is one of the more expensive cities in Germany; we do not give specific rents, because they depend heavily on location and condition. Wiehre and Herdern are particularly in demand. One reason for the high demand is the students of the University of Freiburg and the staff of the Freiburg University Hospital, one of the region's major employers.
Other employers include the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE), the Haufe Group and medium-sized companies in environmental and solar technology. Anyone moving to Freiburg for work should start looking for a flat early, because the market is especially competitive at the start of semester.

Moving into Freiburg's old town: pedestrian zone, delivery times and exemption permit
Special rules apply to moves into Freiburg's pedestrian zone. According to the city of Freiburg, driving into and parking in the pedestrian zone is prohibited in principle. Delivery traffic is generally allowed with a permissible total weight of 7.5 tonnes, at times that vary from street to street. The times are listed in a city leaflet with a map and street index and are signposted on site. The vehicle must leave the zone promptly after unloading.
Anyone planning a move into the pedestrian zone applies to the traffic authority for an exemption permit for parking. The city states:
- apply online, at least two weeks before the date, no documents required
- fee 15 euros per day
- The permit only applies to the vehicle used and must be clearly displayed in the vehicle.
- The rules of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) continue to apply.
The city recommends explaining in the application why the vehicle has to be parked in the pedestrian zone. According to the city, private cars may stop briefly during delivery times to load and unload heavy, bulky goods, but only in areas approved for this. During the survey we check the route from the building to the nearest access point and plan the loading time and carrying routes accordingly. For the general process, you will find further tips in the long-distance moving guide for Freiburg.
Old buildings, furniture lift and student moves in Freiburg
In old buildings in the city centre, the staircase, floor and access determine how a move goes. Whether a furniture lift makes sense, we clarify during the survey. We check whether the window or balcony is large enough and whether the lift can stand in the street. If it stands on public land, we need a space for it, and this can be secured with a parking ban. In Freiburg the following applies: the application is submitted online to the traffic authority at least two weeks before the date. According to the city, the order is issued no earlier than six weeks beforehand, and the signs must be up four days before. The fee is 30 euros per day for private individuals and 50 euros for businesses.
Many moves in Freiburg are student moves. It is worth taking a close look at the order of steps:
- request the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord
- book a registration appointment via freiburg.de/termine; according to the city, the deadline is two weeks after moving in
- pack boxes and furniture separately by room
- agree access and stopping options for moving day with us
Also ask your landlord or property management about rules for the staircase and quiet hours, so that there are no surprises on moving day.
For small households we offer a suitable student move. Further districts are covered in our guide Moving to Freiburg im Breisgau.
