Moving Berlin – Freiburg: Route Duration & Checklist

From Berlin to the Breisgau
Long-distance move to Freiburg: 810 km right across Germany
Route, driving time, schedule
A long-distance move to Freiburg is one of the longest moves within Germany: from Berlin it is around 810 km by road to Freiburg im Breisgau – meaning the city in Baden-Württemberg, not Freiburg im Üechtland (Fribourg) in Switzerland. By lorry, that is about 12.5 hours including breaks, more than one day's driving time. We therefore plan two drivers or an overnight stop. Further information on our range of services can be found on our Private move page.
Freiburg lies on the western edge of the Black Forest; the French border on the Rhine is only a few kilometres away, and Basel around 50 km as the crow flies. For a move within Germany, customs plays no role; what matters are driving times, the Sunday driving ban for heavy lorries and the parking ban in front of your new home. We quote the fixed price after a survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB. Call us on 01625978461 – the route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Freiburg.

Common questions
Formalities when moving to Freiburg
A move from Berlin to Freiburg is a move within Germany: customs plays no role, even though the French border on the Rhine is only a few kilometres from the city limits. However, anyone moving to Freiburg im Üechtland (Fribourg) in Switzerland needs a customs declaration for their household goods – this page refers to Freiburg im Breisgau.
The classic formalities include registering with the registration authority within two weeks with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), re-registering the car (the Berlin number plate may be kept) and giving your new address for the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag), to your bank and insurers. A Deutsche Post mail forwarding order lasts no more than six months. That way you will not forget any important step on your move to Freiburg.

A long-distance move begins with a free survey in which we record the moving volume and special features. You then receive a written fixed-price quote covering packing, transport, loading and unloading and, optionally, furniture assembly. Berlin – Freiburg: route, lorry driving bans and schedule
The long-distance move from Berlin to Freiburg im Breisgau runs from our location in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) around 810 km via the A9, A4 and A5 to the south-west. Including breaks, that is about 12.5 hours for the lorry; the exact schedule is determined by loading and the unloading date.
For heavy removal lorries, § 30 (3) StVO imposes a driving ban on Sundays and public holidays from 0:00 to 22:00 for lorries over 7.5 tonnes permissible total weight used for commercial goods transport. Nationwide public holidays include New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 May, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, 3 October and both Christmas holidays. Corpus Christi and All Saints' Day also apply in Baden-Württemberg. We time departure and arrival so that the lorry does not have to drive on Sundays and public holidays.
On top of this come the EU driving times under Regulation (EC) No 561/2006: a maximum of nine hours a day, ten hours on two days a week, and a 45-minute break after four and a half hours of driving. These requirements are built into the route planning so that you receive a clear arrival window.
A useful checklist for the last few weeks: apply for the parking ban, clarify access, label boxes and furniture by room, transfer electricity and internet. How a move to Freiburg works is explained in the moving guide for Freiburg, and life on the ground in the newcomers' guide.
Access in Freiburg: applying for a parking ban zone and the pedestrian zone
The city's traffic authority is responsible for the removal van in Freiburg. You apply for a parking ban zone (Haltverbotszone) via the online form on formulare.freiburg.de; no documents are needed. The application must be submitted at least two weeks before the date. The city issues the order no earlier than six weeks beforehand. The signs must be in place four days before the move and be set up by a specialist company, as the city does not provide signs. According to the city, the fee under the GebOSt is 30 euros per day for private individuals and 50 euros per day for businesses. If vehicles park in the zone despite the signs, they can be towed away at the owner's expense.
For moves in the pedestrian zone you need a separate exemption permit for parking. You also apply for this online, at least two weeks in advance. The city states 15 euros per day. The permit only applies to the vehicle for which it was issued and must be clearly visible in the vehicle; the StVO rules remain unaffected. Explain in the application why the vehicle has to park in the pedestrian zone. According to the city, set times apply there for delivery traffic up to 7.5 tonnes, depending on the street.
On request, we help coordinate these steps. The guide to the parking restriction zone and our parking restriction zone service show the process, and background on the city is provided on the page Moving in Freiburg im Breisgau.
