Disposing of bulky waste properly

Disposal guide
Bulky waste before the move: collection, drop-off or hand it to us
Three ways compared
If you want to dispose of bulky waste, there are three ways: book a collection from the municipal waste company, take it to the recycling centre yourself or have the moving company take it away during the move. In Berlin, collection by the BSR is subject to a charge, whereas smaller amounts up to 3 m³ can be handed in at a recycling centre free of charge. Which route suits you depends on the amount, the time available and whether you have a van.
Combining it with the move is practical: moving out produces old furniture and household goods, which we can take away and dispose of at the same time if you wish. This then appears as a separate item in the fixed price that we give you after the inventory. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. More about our moving services can be found under private move.

Handing bulky waste to us during the move
As an item in the fixed price
If a move is coming up anyway, we can take old furniture with us at the same time. Call 01625978461 and tell us the amount and type of items. After the inventory you receive a fixed price in which the bulky waste disposal is listed separately. Anything still in good condition you can sell or give away beforehand – that lowers the price.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

When it makes sense for us to take it
When you are moving anyway
Many people wonder whether a firm is worth it for bulky waste disposal when there is a municipal collection. Our advantage lies in moving day: we are at your address anyway with a vehicle and team, carry the old furniture downstairs along with everything else and take it for disposal. We set the date together with the move. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); we give you the price as a fixed price after the inventory. For disposal alone without a move, the BSR collection may be cheaper – we will tell you that openly.

Six rules for bulky waste
A few simple rules help with bulky waste disposal before a move. They save money, avoid rejected collections and make sure that on moving day only what you really want to keep comes along.
Sort out early
Sell and give away
What is excluded
Take it yourself
Book a collection
Don't just put it outside
A shared load for furniture that should stay in use
Not everything that doesn't fit into the new flat has to go as bulky waste. If a piece of furniture is meant for family or friends in another city, a shared load can be cheaper than a transport of its own: it travels with other consignments on the same route.

Bulky
waste as part of the move
Bulky waste disposal is usually part of a larger undertaking – a move or a household clearance. With a private move we take old furniture away at the same time if you wish; before a long-distance move, sorting out is especially worthwhile, because every piece of furniture would travel a long way. For larger amounts from cellars, lofts or whole flats, a house clearance helps.

Questions about bulky waste disposal
What actually counts as bulky waste?
Bulky waste covers all items from private households that, because of their size, do not fit into the regular residual waste bin. Typically this includes sofas, wardrobes, mattresses, carpets and tables. Broken bicycles or discarded garden furniture also fall into this category, provided they are not classed as hazardous waste.
Not part of bulky waste, on the other hand, are electrical appliances, rubble, tyres or leftover paint – these must be disposed of separately. If you are unsure, check carefully before the collection which items actually count as bulky waste, to avoid extra costs or a rejected collection.
Disposing of bulky waste: three ways step by step
First decide whether to use the municipal bulky waste collection, take the bulky waste to the recycling centre yourself or hand it over during the move. In Berlin, you book the collection with the BSR online or by phone; according to BSR, the cheapest rate costs €50 for up to 5 m³ with collection from the 16th working day, and faster collection costs more. Recycling centres accept smaller amounts up to 3 m³ free of charge if you have a vehicle.
If a move is coming up anyway, you can hand the old furniture to us: we carry it downstairs with everything else and dispose of it, and the item appears in the fixed price. That saves you an extra appointment and the trip to the recycling centre.

The moving price in detail: these factors play a role
Most important are the volume of your household goods and the distance to be driven, which we charge from €3.80/km. Then there are the floor, lift and a possible parking restriction zone. Furniture assembly and shared load can also affect the final price.
