Disposing of electronic waste when moving – how to do it properly

Hand it in, do not throw it away

Unsere Firma Professional on-site moving solutions with secure planning, flexible services and on-time execution.

When you move, old electrical appliances that are no longer needed often turn up: fridges, televisions, washing machines or broken kitchen appliances. Disposing of electronic waste is regulated by law, and it must never end up in household waste. As a removal company, we support you not only with your private move but also with the environmentally sound disposal of your old appliances. That way you save time and avoid unnecessary fines for incorrect disposal.

The rules for electronic waste are set out in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) and apply nationwide; where you hand in old appliances is up to each local authority. In Berlin, the BSR recycling centres accept electrical appliances from households free of charge, and if you book a bulky-waste collection, the BSR takes old appliances away at no charge. On request, we clear out old appliances as part of a house clearance – the cost is stated in the quote. If you are planning one of our long-distance moves, it is best to dispose of old appliances before departure.

Old appliances when moving: our part

Taking away what has to go

A move shows how many appliances nobody needs any more: the old fridge in the cellar, the tube television, boxes full of cables. On request, we carry such old appliances out as part of a house clearance; the cost is stated in advance in the fixed price. Small appliances and batteries are often quicker to hand in yourself at a shop or the recycling centre – the rules for this are in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); the locations overview shows which places have their own pages.

Recycling centre

The BSR recycling centres accept waste electrical appliances from Berlin households free of charge; for large appliances there is a maximum number per delivery.

Return to the retailer

Retailers with at least 400 m² of electrical sales space take back up to three small appliances of each type up to 25 cm free of charge, even without a new purchase.

Remove batteries

Separate removable batteries and lamps from the appliance before handing it in (§ 10 ElektroG); tape over the terminals of rechargeable batteries.

Delete data

You are responsible for deleting personal data on your phone, laptop or hard drive yourself – reset devices before handing them in.
HANDED IN PROPERLY

How we support you

Recyclable materials from old electrical appliances are valuable and should always be recycled. We help you separate electronic waste correctly and make the best use of reusable materials.

01

Reliable moving service

We clarify with you in advance which old appliances should not go to the new flat, so that they are not loaded by mistake on moving day.
02

Safe handling

We carry fridges and washing machines out just as carefully as furniture – even if all they have left is a trip to recycling.
03

Clear communication

The quote states which appliances we take with us and what that costs; whatever you take to the recycling centre yourself does not appear there.
04

Structured move planning

If you sort things out early, you can hand small appliances in at a shop before the move and save space in the removal van for what is coming with you.
05

Flexible support

Working appliances do not have to be scrapped: donating, giving away or selling is often better than disposal.
06

Data and batteries first

Before a laptop or phone leaves the house, data should be deleted and batteries removed – we remind you of this during planning.
NATIONWIDE SERVICE

Shared load without old appliances

The budget-friendly alternative

If only a few pieces of furniture and appliances are moving, a shared load can be cheaper than a lorry of your own. Old appliances should not come along on the trip: hand them in beforehand at the recycling centre or a shop, so that you do not pay for loading space for electronic waste.

Your
move – fully organised

One team, every service

A move brings many challenges – from planning and transport to disposing of old items. Disposing of electronic waste in particular is often underestimated, because old appliances have to be collected separately and must not go in the general waste. Besides electrical appliances, there are often questions about bulky waste, furniture disposal or cleaning the old flat. We offer you all the relevant services as an all-round package, so that your move runs smoothly and stress-free.

Planning safe and relaxed

A good checklist coordinates dates, helpers and materials early. That way your home move, senior move or student move in Berlin stays transparent, structured and markedly easier to control.

Furniture, boxes, transport routes

With a suitable packing service, careful furniture transport and a flexible small transport, ways can be shortened, damage avoided and even narrow approaches in Berlin managed cleanly in logistical terms.

Costs, timing and special cases

Clear time windows and suitable solutions for an office move, company move, authority move, part load or furniture taxi create reliable processes and better plannable total costs in Berlin.

FAQ

Questions about disposing of electronic waste

Answers on recycling centres, retailer take-back, costs, data, donations and fines when old electrical appliances are left over after a move.
Electronic waste includes all devices with a plug or battery, such as fridges, washing machines, televisions, computers, smartphones and kitchen appliances. Lamps, charging cables and small appliances such as toasters also count. These devices often contain pollutants and valuable raw materials, which is why they must be disposed of properly, separately from household waste. When you move, we help you identify your old appliances correctly and hand them in.

Why electronic waste does not belong in household rubbish

Electronic devices often contain pollutants such as lead, mercury or cadmium, which can contaminate soil and groundwater if disposed of improperly. That is why the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act in Germany requires electronic waste to be collected separately from household waste and sent for special recycling – recognisable by the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol. Anyone who ignores this risks hefty fines.

At the same time, old appliances contain valuable raw materials such as copper, gold or rare earths, which can be recovered through proper recycling. Handling electronic waste responsibly therefore not only protects the environment but also supports the circular economy. As a removal company, we attach great importance to making this process as simple as possible for our customers.

How disposal works when you move

First, decide which electrical appliances are not coming with you. Hand in small appliances up to 25 cm at a shop: retailers with at least 400 m² of electrical sales space take back up to three appliances of each type free of charge, even without a new purchase. If you buy a new large appliance, you can hand in the old one of the same type there (§ 17 ElektroG).

In Berlin, take everything else to a BSR recycling centre, which accepts waste electrical appliances from households free of charge, or put it out with a bulky-waste collection. If you want us to clear out old appliances as part of a house clearance, this will be stated in the quote for your private move.
