Cellar Clearance & Loft

Cellar and loft
Cellar and loft: sort first, then clear
Before moving out
The cellar and loft are the rooms most often forgotten during a move – and the ones that cost the most volume. So start here: anything that has not been used for years does not need to go into the new cellar. Sort into three groups – take with you, sell or give away, dispose of. With a cellar clearance it is worth checking for damp boxes and mould; in the loft, watch out for dust, summer heat and narrow loft ladders. Whatever is left we clear on request as part of a house clearance.
A tenant's cellar and loft compartment are part of the rented property and are handed over empty when you move out. Whatever you take away yourself is accepted from Berlin private households at the BSR recycling centres as follows (as of January 2025): bulky waste up to 3 m³ per delivery free of charge, electrical appliances free of charge. Leftover paint, varnish and chemicals go to the hazardous waste collection, free of charge up to 20 kg per type of waste per day. What we collect and dispose of is stated in the quote beforehand. If the remaining items move with you, the cellar is simply part of the private move.

Fixed price after a survey
Show us the cellar and loft during the survey as well – there is often more there than you think. You will then receive a fixed price in which clearing, carrying and what is to be disposed of are listed separately. Call us on 01625978461 – we will tell you what you should sort out yourself beforehand.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Cellars and lofts have their own pitfalls
Damp, dust, narrow routes
A cellar is not a room like the others: the routes are long, the corridors narrow, the air often damp. In the loft there are also dust, low sloping ceilings and steep loft ladders. For the clearance this means: repack soaked boxes into new ones, carry heavy items over the stairs only with two people and clear the route to the lorry beforehand. We bring blankets and straps and include the cellar and loft in the fixed price after the survey. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); other places can be found under Locations.

Where to put what is left over?
Not everything in the cellar is rubbish – some furniture, tools or books can be sold or given away. For the rest there are clear routes in Berlin. Keep these six groups separate during the cellar clearance.

The rest comes along
If only a few boxes and pieces of furniture from the cellar and loft are left for another city, a shared load can be cheaper than your own lorry. You only pay for the loading space your belongings take up and agree a time window for collection.

Your
move – fully organised
Emptying the cellar and loft before the move saves transport volume and keeps the routes clear on moving day. How bulky waste is collected or dropped off in Berlin can be read in the article Disposing of Bulky Waste Properly; for old appliances there is Disposing of Electrical Waste. What the landlord expects at the handover is explained in the article Broom-Clean Handover. For moving to another city you will find information under Long-distance moves.

Questions about the cellar and loft
Emptying the cellar in four steps
Start early, ideally weeks before the move: first sort things out, then offer what is still usable, then take bulky waste, electrical appliances and hazardous substances away separately. Pack whatever is coming with you into new boxes – old cellar boxes are often damp and tear.
Finally the cellar is handed over empty and broom-clean. Case law usually requires no more than that: heavy dirt must go, cobwebs included. Anything large left after that we collect by arrangement as part of the house clearance.
Loft: sloping ceilings, hatches and dust
The loft often holds boxes nobody has opened for years. Look inside each one before it goes – photos, documents and heirlooms often turn up here of all places. With low sloping ceilings and steep loft ladders, it is better to carry small, light boxes than large ones.
In summer it quickly gets hot under the roof; clear it in the mornings then. A mask helps with old dust and insulation material. A shared or drying loft does not belong to you alone – only clear your own belongings there.

Distance is charged from €4.10/km, while the volume determines the basic time required. Floor and lift affect carrying time, and a parking restriction zone affects loading time. A shared load is also possible and can lower costs.
