A Student Move with Professionals: The Advantages

Student moves
Student move: haul it yourself or pay for help?
An honest comparison
For many students, their first student move is a weekend with friends, a borrowed van and pizza afterwards. That can work out – with three boxes and a mattress on the ground floor. It gets difficult with a loft bed, a wardrobe and a fourth floor without a lift: then there are no carrying straps or furniture blankets, the stairwell gets dented, and in the end it is unclear who pays for the damage. This article compares both approaches honestly.
The most important difference is liability: a moving company is liable for damage to your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, whereas with friends everything depends on their personal liability insurance. The second is time – if you move in the middle of exam season, you cannot spend the day hauling boxes. What we take on for students can be found under student move.

Comparison with a real price
Fixed price after an inventory
Whether paid help is worth it only becomes clear with a concrete figure. Call 01625978461 or send photos: after the inventory check we give you a fixed price. You can then compare it with van hire, fuel and pizza for your friends.

What paid movers do differently
Tools, routine, liability
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, in a student move, take over exactly the parts that most often go wrong with friends: carrying heavy furniture through narrow stairwells, securing it in the van with straps and blankets, and dismantling and reassembling beds or wardrobes. For a flatshare room we do not send an oversized vehicle, but clarify beforehand what is enough. We give you the price as a fixed price. For damage to your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for expensive electronics additional insurance is possible. For routes to another city, see long-distance moves.

Six points for your comparison
Whether paid movers are worth it for a student move depends on a few points. Go through them honestly – sometimes help from your flatmates with pizza really is the better choice, sometimes it ends up costing more than expected.

A third way: shared load
Between help from friends and a moving van of your own there is the shared load: your furniture travels with other consignments on the same route. This is worthwhile above all when your studies start in another city and only one room is moving. You then do not need a van of your own.

When
which solution fits
Between “do it all yourself” and “have it all done” there are mixed options: you pack yourself, we carry and drive. Or friends bring the boxes and we only handle the wardrobe and loft bed. For a complete flat move, take a look at the private move. If you only need strong hands without transport, look under moving help. Storage between two tenancies is also possible on request.

Questions about moving with a moving company
How a move with paid movers works
It starts with a short consultation: you send photos or describe on the phone what needs to move, from which floor and where to. You then get a fixed price in which packing, transport and assembly are listed separately if you book them. On moving day we carry, secure and transport; whatever you have packed yourself is labelled and ready.
On request we reassemble the furniture in the new flat. The final cleaning of the old flat and the key handover remain with you – plan a little time for this after moving out. Especially with tight time windows between moving out and moving in, it helps if the move itself is done in a few hours.
What the comparison costs
The costs of a student move with a moving company depend on volume, distance, floor and extra services; our guide prices by number of rooms are in the overview below. Against this, a move with friends involves van hire, kilometres, fuel, food and the risk that something breaks without anyone being liable.
A practical tip for both approaches: sort things out beforehand. Every piece of furniture less saves carrying time and loading space. If you enquire early, ideally three to four weeks before the change of semester, you also have more choice of dates. If you pay income tax, you can deduct 20% of the labour costs (§ 35a EStG).
What do you pay for your move?
The costs depend on the size of the flat and the distance. Smaller 1-room flats move from €349. Slightly larger 2-room flats start from €594. For 3 rooms we calculate from €879, for 4 rooms from €1,269. If it is a house or a villa, we always prepare an individual quote. For long-distance moves a price per kilometre from €3.95 also applies. What does a move really cost?
A realistic moving price is made up of several components: the volume of your household goods, the distance (from €3.95/km) and structural conditions such as the floor and lift. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) may also become necessary. Optional services such as furniture assembly and a shared load extend the offer.
