Student moves

Student moves: little furniture, little time, clear costs

Process, costs, tips

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and brings your shared-flat room, bed and book boxes to your new student digs.

A student move is usually small: a bed, a desk, a shelf and boxes of books. Time and money are tight, though, because many people move at the same time at the start of term. An honest inventory beforehand helps – by phone, photos or video call – so it is clear whether a small van is enough or a shared load is worthwhile. If you pack yourself and have the boxes ready before moving day, you save the most. After that you get a fixed price for transport, carrying and, if you wish, assembly.

Don't forget: where you study, you must register within two weeks of moving in. Your main residence is the home you mainly use – so for most students, the one where they study. If your childhood bedroom at your parents' stays your main residence, the city may charge second-home tax (Zweitwohnungsteuer) – in Berlin, since 2025, 20% of the net basic rent. What we offer students is described under Student move; if you are moving to another city, under long-distance moves.

MAXIMUM CARE

What we take care of in a student move

Transport, carrying, assembly – you pack

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a student move, take care of what is hard to do alone: carrying through narrow stairwells, transport and, if you wish, dismantling and reassembling the bed and wardrobe. You can do the packing yourself, which saves money. We give the price as a fixed price after the inventory. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; your laptop and documents are best taken with you.

Pack yourself, save money

If you pack and label the boxes yourself, you only pay for carrying and transport – a packing service is still available if you want it.

Small van

For a room in a shared flat, a small vehicle is often enough; we clarify this at the inventory instead of sending a large lorry as standard.

Assembly and dismantling

Loft bed, wardrobe, desk: we dismantle them and reassemble them in your new digs, so you can sleep in your own bed on the first evening.

Shared load for long distances

If you are moving to another city to study, a few pieces of furniture often travel more cheaply as a shared load than in a van of your own.
SMALL BUDGET

Six money-saving tips for a student move

In a student move, preparation determines the price. These six points save money and time – from decluttering to registering at the registration office (Bürgeramt).

01

Declutter beforehand

Whatever doesn't fit into the new room, sell or give away beforehand – every piece of furniture less makes the move cheaper.
02

Ask early

Dates are scarce at the start of term and at the end of the month; if you ask two to three weeks ahead, you have more choice of moving date.
03

Photos instead of estimates

With photos of the furniture and stairwell the quote becomes more accurate – and there is no surprise with the fixed price on moving day.
04

Settle your main residence

Your main residence is the one you mainly use; if it stays with your parents, second-home tax may be charged where you study.
05

Check the broadcasting fee

In a shared flat one person pays for everyone; a room in halls on an open corridor counts as a separate home. With BAföG while living away from your parents, exemption is possible.
06

Deadlines after moving in

Register within two weeks at the registration office (Bürgeramt), with ID and landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) – you get this from the landlord or the halls of residence.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Little furniture, long distance

If you are moving to another city with only a few pieces of furniture, a shared load is often the cheapest solution: your things travel with other consignments on the same route. For this you need a few days' flexibility on the delivery date – handy if you are spending the first nights with friends or in the shared flat anyway.

What a student move involves

A student move has its own issues: van or shared load, boxes from the supermarket or bought ones, parking restriction outside the old building or not. Then there are the formalities where you study – registering at the Bürgeramt, main residence, second-home tax, the broadcasting fee in halls of residence. This guide explains both, so you don't get stuck between boxes and authorities at the start of term. You can read more about shared loads for students in the article Shared load for students.

Planning for the start of term

Tenancy start, exam period and moving day rarely line up by themselves. Plan the student move two to three weeks ahead, ask early and have the landlord confirmation ready for registration. If moving day falls in the exam period, pack a week beforehand.

Boxes, furniture, stairwell

Pack books in small boxes, dismantle the loft bed beforehand, send photos of the stairwell: with little furniture transport and a well-prepared small transport, a shared-flat move often takes just a few hours.

Costs and additional costs

Besides the fixed price for the transport, the deposit, the broadcasting fee and, where applicable, second-home tax all count. If you work this out before signing the tenancy agreement, you won't get an expensive surprise in your first term – especially in cities with a high second-home tax.

FAQ

Questions about student moves

Costs, planning, shared load, liability, registration and the broadcasting fee – answered briefly.
The costs of a student move depend on the moving volume, floor, lift and distance. A room in a shared flat is usually much smaller than a whole flat; our guide prices by number of rooms are in the price overview. After the inventory you get a fixed price, so you can plan your budget.

How a student move works

The process starts with a short inventory of your furniture and boxes – by phone, photos or video call. After that you get a fixed price for transport, carrying and, if you wish, assembly and dismantling and a parking restriction zone.

On moving day your boxes are packed; we carry and transport and reassemble the bed and wardrobe in the new flat. Within two weeks of moving in, you then register where you study.

Cutting costs on a student move

The costs of a student move depend on volume, floor, lift and distance. You save the most if you declutter beforehand, pack yourself and ask early; for long distances and a few pieces of furniture, a shared load is often cheaper.

Also factor in the additional costs of your new home: in Berlin, since 2025, second-home tax is 20% of the net basic rent if you are only registered here with a secondary residence. Only one person per home pays the broadcasting fee.

What does a move with us cost?

Many people wonder: what does a move cost? The answer depends on the size of the flat. With us, prices start at €365 for a 1-room flat, €615 for a 2-room flat, €905 for a 3-room flat and €1,279 for a 4-room flat. If you live in a house or villa, you receive an individual quote from us. For long-distance moves we charge from €3.95/km. The quickest way to find out your exact price is a free survey.

What influences the moving price?

The price of your move depends on several factors: the volume of your household, the distance (from €3.95 per kilometre), the floor and whether there is a lift. A required parking restriction zone also affects the costs. Additional services such as furniture assembly or shared load can change the price individually.
