Piano Transport Checklist: Forget Nothing

Checklist
Piano transport checklist: before, on the day, afterwards
Nothing forgotten
A piano transport goes best when a few things have been clarified before the date – and most of them can only be done by the owner. Measure the doors, stair landings and, if there is one, the lift car at both addresses. Think about where the instrument should stand in the new home: not right next to the radiator, not in blazing sun by the window. And note down the manufacturer, model and approximate value, because this determines whether the statutory liability is sufficient.
For the day itself: the route from the instrument to the lorry must be clear, and the lorry needs a space in front of the building. In Berlin, the application for a parking restriction zone often takes around four weeks, and the signs must be in place at least 72 hours beforehand – on request we apply for it for you; more on this under Parking restriction zone. After the transport, check the instrument and let it rest for a few weeks before it is tuned. How we handle the transport itself is described on our Piano transport page.

Before the date: clarify four things
What only the owner knows
With a piano transport, some questions can only be answered by the owner: where should the instrument stand? How much is it worth? Is there existing damage? And who in the building needs to know? Clarify these points before the survey, and we can plan the route, number of carriers and fixed price precisely. We are liable for the instrument under the HGB, by law up to €620 per cubic metre of loading space – for a valuable grand piano we can discuss additional insurance on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); other places can be found under Locations.

The checklist in six points
Upright and grand pianos often have a high material and emotional value. With these six points you are well prepared before, on the day of and after the piano transport – tick them off in order, ideally during your first call.

Parking restriction
Prepare the instrument
Clear the route

Piano on its own to another city?
If only the piano is going to another city, a shared load can reduce the costs: the instrument travels padded and strapped down with other jobs on the same route. Plan for a time window instead of a fixed day and tell us when someone will be there at the destination.

Your
move, our craft
Piano transport is often booked together with a complete private move; the checklist for the instrument then applies in addition to planning the move. How the transport itself works and what the price depends on is described in the article Piano Transport: Process, Costs & Tips. With a long-distance move, the instrument should also get to its place quickly at the destination.

Questions about the piano transport checklist
Before the date: measure, plan, notify
Measure the door widths, stair landings and the lift car at both addresses. Decide where the instrument should stand in the new home – ideally on an inside wall, away from the radiator and window. Apply for a parking restriction zone in good time and inform the building management and neighbours.
Photograph the instrument from all sides before the date and note down the manufacturer, model and approximate value. During the survey on site or by video we then determine the route, number of carriers and the aids needed. If the value is high, we discuss additional insurance.
On the day and afterwards
On moving day, the route from the instrument to the front door should be clear: rugs removed, doors open and wedged, children and pets in another room. Remove decorations, sheet music and candle holders beforehand; the lids and lock are closed, and you keep the key.
After it has been set up, check the case, keys and pedals. Report visible damage no later than the day after delivery, hidden damage within 14 days (§ 451f HGB). Let the instrument rest for a few weeks before you book the piano tuner.
Cost overview for your move
- Small moves: 1 room from €369
- Medium moves: 2 rooms from €579
- Larger moves: 3 rooms from €905
- Large moves: 4 rooms from €1,269
- Special cases: house/villa individual quote
- Long routes: long-distance move from €4.15/km
We give you the exact price after a free survey.
What does your moving price depend on?
Besides the pure volume of your furniture, it is above all the distance (from €4.15/km) that affects the total cost. A floor without a lift or a required parking restriction zone can also increase the price. If you also book furniture assembly or a shared load, you should factor this in.
