Piano Transport: Process Costs & Tips

Upright and grand piano
Piano transport: five steps and six price factors
Process and costs
An upright piano or a grand piano is heavy, top-heavy and delicate at the same time – which is why it is transported differently from a wardrobe. An upright piano is carried standing with straps and moved on a dolly. With a grand piano, the legs and pedal lyre are usually unscrewed; the instrument is stood on its edge on the straight long side and strapped to a grand piano skid. In both cases blankets protect the case. How we handle this is described on our Piano transport page – as a single job or as part of a private move.
Every piano transport begins with a survey: we look at the instrument, the stairwell, landings, door widths and the route to the lorry at both addresses. From this we work out how many carriers are needed and whether the stairs are possible at all or an external lift has to be considered. Only then do we give a fixed price. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); for routes to other cities, read more under Long-distance moves.

Fixed price after a survey
For upright and grand pianos
After the survey we give you a fixed price for your piano transport that takes into account carriers, floors, carrying distances and the route. Call us on 01625978461 and tell us the type and manufacturer of the instrument and both addresses with floor straight away.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

How piano transport works
From the survey to setting it up
A piano transport always follows the same order: survey, preparing the instrument, carrying, securing it in the vehicle and setting it up in its new place. During preparation the lids are closed, loose parts removed and, with a grand piano, the legs and lyre dismantled. In the lorry the piano stands against the wall and is fixed with straps so that it does not slide during the journey. At the destination we set it up where you want it and, with a grand piano, reattach the legs and lyre. We are liable for the instrument under the HGB.

Six factors that determine the price
What piano transport costs depends less on the instrument than on the route. These six factors go into the fixed price – if you know them, you can influence some of them in advance.

Piano on a groupage run?
If only the piano is going to another city, a shared load can be cheaper than a separate journey: the instrument travels padded and strapped down with other jobs on the same route. Instead of a fixed delivery day there is then a time window.

Your
move – fully organised
Piano transport is often booked together with a move – the instrument then travels in the same lorry as the household goods. What we take care of can be read under Private move and Piano transport. What you should check yourself before the date is shown in the article Piano Transport Checklist. For long routes there are Long-distance moves; there the instrument stands padded and strapped down in the same lorry as your furniture.

Questions about process and costs
Process of a professional piano transport
Piano transport begins with a survey at which the type of instrument, its dimensions and the routes at both addresses are recorded: stairs, landings, door widths, lift and the distance to the lorry. From this we work out how many carriers and which aids are needed and whether the stairs are possible or an external lift has to be considered.
On moving day we secure the instrument with piano straps and blankets; a grand piano is dismantled beforehand and strapped on its edge to a grand piano skid. It is carried by several people, on level stretches with a dolly. In the lorry the instrument is strapped to the wall and set up in the desired place at the destination.
Costs and influencing factors in piano transport
The cost of piano transport depends above all on the route: floors without a lift, narrow stairwells, long carrying distances and the journey. A grand piano needs more time and carriers than an upright piano because it has to be dismantled.
After the survey we give you a fixed price. By law, removal companies are liable up to €620 per cubic metre of loading space (§ 451e HGB) – often less than the value of a grand piano. Tell us the value beforehand; on request we can discuss additional insurance.
This is what your move really costs
Small flats remain affordable: for a 1-room flat you pay from €369, for a 2-room flat from €599. Larger households cost correspondingly more – a 3-room flat from €899, a 4-room flat from €1,299. For houses and villas there is an individual quote, and if you are moving further away you pay from €3.85/km for long-distance moves. Get no-obligation advice during a free survey.
What does your moving price depend on?
Besides the pure volume of your furniture, it is above all the distance (from €3.85/km) that affects the total cost. A floor without a lift or a required parking restriction zone can also increase the price. If you also book furniture assembly or a shared load, you should factor this in.
