A Piano Transport: Avoid These Mistakes

Typical mistakes in piano transport
Avoiding damage
A piano transport rarely goes wrong on the road – it goes wrong in the last few metres: in the stairwell, at the flat door or when setting the instrument down. An upright piano weighs roughly 170 to 270 kg depending on its size, a baby grand around 280 to 350 kg – on top of that come the delicate action behind the keyboard and a case that is easily damaged on edges and castors when tipped. Anyone who lifts the instrument with too few helpers, pulls it by the legs or lowers it down the stairs without straps risks scratches, broken castors and injured backs. That is why at Beste Umzug Unternehmen we work with piano straps, dollies, padded blankets and enough staff.
The most expensive mistakes happen before moving day: stair width, landings and door sizes are not measured, and nobody has clarified who pays for damage. We look at the access and the instrument beforehand and then give you a fixed price. For household goods we are liable under the HGB – limited to €620 per cubic metre of required loading space. If your instrument is worth more, ask us about additional insurance. We handle the piano transport on its own or as part of your private move.

Fixed price after a survey
One mistake is very easy to avoid: booking the piano without a survey. Call us without obligation on 01625978461. We look at the instrument, stairs and doors and then give you a fixed price – whether it is an upright, a grand or a digital piano.

How we prevent damage
Planning before muscle
Most damage in piano transport has the same causes: too few hands, missing straps, a route that was never measured and uncertainty about liability. We clarify these points before anyone lifts the instrument. During the survey we measure doors, hallways and stair landings, check the floor and the lift and decide how many people we plan for. The quote states the fixed price, and we explain how far our liability under the HGB extends. Whether as part of a larger private move or as a single job – we are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21).

What we do for you
Behind each of these points is a mistake you see again and again in piano transport – and one we rule out with you before moving day. That way you know beforehand who does what, what it costs and how far liability extends.

Moving
& transport from a single source
A piano rarely moves on its own. Furniture dismantling, the kitchen and boxes often belong to the same appointment – in that case we plan the piano transport so that the instrument gets a fixed, strapped place in the loading space and does not stand between boxes and furniture. On long-distance moves it travels in the same lorry. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Questions about typical mistakes in piano transport
Process of a professional piano transport
A successful piano transport begins long before the actual moving day with a careful on-site survey. We check access routes, door widths, stair conditions and possible obstacles in order to plan the best transport route. On the day of the transport we first secure the lid, pedals and moving parts before the instrument is carefully lifted onto a dolly.
With special piano straps and enough staff – how many people depends on weight, stairs and floor – the piano is brought safely to the transport vehicle. In the vehicle it is firmly strapped down so that the instrument does not shift during the journey. At the destination the process is repeated in reverse order, including proper positioning at the desired spot.
Typical mistakes in the piano transport and how you avoid them
One of the most common mistakes is trying to move a piano yourself without enough people or suitable equipment. This often leads to back injuries among helpers or, worse still, damage to the valuable instrument. A lack of stable securing during transport can also put the sensitive strings and action out of tune.
Another typical mistake is failing to plan in advance for narrow passages or stairwells, which can lead to nasty surprises on moving day. Also risky: not clarifying liability beforehand. A removal company is liable for household goods up to a maximum of €620 per cubic metre of required loading space (§ 451e HGB) – for a valuable instrument that may not be enough. And it is best to arrange the tuning appointment with your piano tuner rather than booking it for the day after the transport. You can read how we plan piano transport on the service page.
