Piano transport

Piano transport: weight, floor, route

Estimating costs

Unsere Firma Whether upright or grand, ground floor or fourth floor: weight and route determine the price of a piano transport.

A piano transport requires special expertise, as upright and grand pianos are not only heavy but also extremely delicate. Our team works with special lifting straps, transport wedges and padded piano dollies to move your instrument safely. Every piano transport is planned individually so that stairwells, narrow door frames or difficult access routes are not a problem. This keeps your valuable instrument protected throughout the entire move.

Our carriers know the weight distribution of upright pianos, grand pianos and digital pianos and secure the instrument with blankets, padding and straps against scratches and knocks. We are liable for damage under the HGB; because a piano takes up little load space, the statutory liability (€620 per m³) often covers only part of its value – additional insurance then makes sense. If required, we combine the transport with a private move or plan it as part of long-distance moves.

CARE ON EVERY STEP

What matters in a piano transport

Plan, secure, set up

A piano or grand piano is valuable to its owners – financially and emotionally. That is why we plan every piano transport after a survey: weight, stairwell, door widths and parking space determine how many carriers and which tools are needed. Liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance for valuable instruments is possible. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and also drive nationwide; you will find destinations under Locations. We give you the price in advance as a fixed price.

Padding

Blankets, foam and edge protectors protect the finish and the case. With a grand piano, the legs and pedal lyre are removed – part of the piano transport.

Stairwell

Every floor without a lift means heavy work for several carriers. We clarify narrow spiral staircases or landings during the survey, because they determine the effort.

Setting up

At the destination we place the instrument where you want it – not right next to the radiator. After that it needs a little time to acclimatise.

Furniture transport

The piano stool, music cabinet and shelves come along too. This way you combine the piano transport with a small furniture transport instead of two appointments.
PRICE FACTORS

What determines the price of a piano transport

The price of a piano transport comes mainly from the instrument, the route through the building and the distance. We check these factors during the survey – and you can clarify some of them in advance.

01

Instrument

A digital piano is light, an upright piano heavy, a grand piano heavier still: a baby grand weighs around 280–350 kg, a concert grand over 600 kilograms.
02

Floor and lift

Every floor without a lift lengthens the route and needs more carriers. A lift only helps if the car and load capacity are sufficient for the instrument.
03

Tight spots

Narrow doors, bends in the stairwell or steps at the entrance make the route more demanding. Measure door widths in advance – this saves time during the survey.
04

Parking space

The closer the lorry stops to the door, the shorter the carrying distance. In Berlin, parking restriction signs must be in place at least 72 hours in advance.
05

Route

In the city it is mainly the carrying time that counts; on long routes the journey is added. A piano can also travel along as part of a move.
06

Value and liability

Statutory liability is based on cubic metres, not on value. For a valuable instrument, additional insurance belongs in the calculation.
SAVING OPTION

A piano as a part load

Cheaper if you have time
A part load saves costs because empty runs are avoided: an upright or digital piano travels securely on a route that is planned anyway. Well suited to instruments going to family, a music school or a new flat in another city – with an agreed collection window and a route that bundles several jobs.

THE PIANO IN THE MOVE

The
piano on its own or with the whole move?

On its own, combined, as a part load

A piano transport is often requested together with a flat move, for example as part of a private move. The instrument then travels in the same lorry, and the carriers are on site anyway. For moves to other cities or countries, too, we secure the instrument for the long journey – details under Long-distance moves. For individual instruments without a fixed date, a part load is often cheaper. That way you find the right combination of date and price.

With the flat move

If the piano travels with your private move, you save a second trip. We also plan it in for a senior move or when the instrument passes to the children after a student move.

On its own within the city

For an instrument on its own, a small vehicle is often enough, but with enough carriers. A packing service for sheet music, furniture transport for the stool and cabinet and a small transport keep the appointment short.

Schools, offices, halls

Even in an office move, company relocation or public authority move, a grand piano is sometimes in the way. Smaller instruments travel as a part load or by furniture taxi.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the cost of a piano transport

Answers on price, liability, grand pianos, preparation and tuning.
There is no credible average price, because an upright piano on the ground floor is something different from a grand piano on the fourth floor without a lift. The deciding factors are weight, floor, tight spots, parking space and distance – and whether the instrument travels on its own or with a move. We give you a fixed price after a survey that lists all agreed services.

How a professional piano transport works

Every piano transport begins with an on-site survey, during which we check the weight, size and access routes for the instrument. We then decide how many carriers are needed and which route leads through the stairwell, lift or tight spots.

On moving day we secure the piano with straps and padding and move it on a dolly. At the destination we place it where you want it. Because the instrument has to adjust to the room climate and humidity, you should only have it tuned after a few weeks. More on preparation in the article Piano transport checklist.

Cost factors in a piano transport

The costs of a piano transport depend mainly on the weight and size of the instrument, the floor, the accessibility of the building and the parking space. The distance between the start and destination also plays a role, especially if the piano is not combined with a move.

After the survey you receive a fixed price that lists all agreed services. You can add extras such as packing, additional insurance or a part load to adapt the piano transport to your needs.

Starting prices if the piano travels with the move

  • 1 room: from €354
  • 2 rooms: from €594
  • 3 rooms: from €889
  • 4 rooms: from €1,289
  • House/villa: individual quote
  • Long-distance move: from €4.25/km
