Packing Crockery & Glasses Safely

Moving company Berlin
Packing crockery & glasses: upright, padded, small
Arrive without broken pieces
When packing crockery, technique decides between breakage and a safe arrival. Plates are wrapped individually in unprinted packing paper and stood upright in the box – if they lie flat on top of each other, the entire weight presses down on the bottom plate. Cups and bowls get paper in the hollow and a layer of their own on top; heavy pieces go at the bottom. Small boxes are better than large ones because they stay carriable and the base holds. If you want to save yourself the work, book our packing service and let us pack up the kitchen.
Packing glasses safely in particular takes a delicate touch, as thin glass is sensitive to knocks and changes in temperature. We pad goblets and wine glasses individually, consistently fill gaps in the box and clearly mark every box “Fragile”. For private moves we offer this service as a fixed-price package as part of our private move services. For long-distance moves over several hundred kilometres, this extra protection is particularly important – more under Long-distance moves.

Have the kitchen packed or pack it yourself?
Both are possible – with a fixed price in advance
Call us on 01625978461 and tell us whether we should pack your crockery and glasses or whether you will pack them yourself. We then give you a fixed price for your entire move, with or without the packing service. If we pack, we are also liable for the packing under the German Commercial Code; if you pack yourself, different rules apply to packing damage.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Whoever packs bears the risk
What the German Commercial Code says about it
With crockery, it is worth looking at the law: if damage results from inadequate packing that you did yourself, the removal company's liability may not apply (§ 451d HGB). If we pack your crockery, we are liable under the German Commercial Code, limited to €620 per cubic metre of loading space (§ 451e HGB). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and bring boxes, paper and padding with us. You receive the fixed price, with or without the packing service, in advance.

Services that fit
Six rules for crockery and glasses that you should follow when packing yourself – they hold up on longer routes too.

Safe handling

Only a few boxes? Use a shared load
With a shared load, your boxes travel on a lorry that is heading in that direction anyway – cheaper than a dedicated trip if you only have a few boxes. In that case in particular, the crockery should be well packed and clearly labelled as fragile, because other goods are travelling too.

Moving
service without compromise
Besides packing crockery and glasses safely, there are many other aspects that make for a smooth move – from dismantling furniture to the final clean. If you plan early and organise suitable packing material, you save valuable time and stress on moving day. The choice between a private move and a long-distance move also affects how much preparation is needed. Questions about packing crockery
The right material for crockery and glasses
For safe transport you need sturdy, double-walled boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap and special crockery dividers. Avoid newspaper directly on the china, as printer's ink can rub off – use unprinted tissue paper or moving paper instead.
The size of the box also matters: small boxes that can be filled well prevent the base from giving way under too much weight. Clearly label every box “Fragile – This way up” so that everyone involved in the move handles it with appropriate care.
Step by step: how to pack properly
Wrap each plate individually in packing paper and then stand them upright in the box – never flat on top of each other, as the pressure on the middle becomes too great. Fill glasses and cups with scrunched-up paper to make them more stable, and add extra padding between the walls.
Fill every gap in the box with filling material so that nothing can slip, and only close the box once there is no room for movement left. If you would rather save yourself this work, you can book the complete packing service as part of our private move.
Moving rates at a glance
Our rates are based on the size of your flat: 1 room from €359, 2 rooms from €615, 3 rooms from €909 and 4 rooms from €1,324. For a house or villa we prepare an individual quote, as many details have to be taken into account. For long-distance moves a price from €4.15/km applies. Get no-obligation advice during a free survey.
Moving costs in detail
First the volume of the goods is determined, then the distance (from €4.15/km) is calculated. The floor and the lift situation are then factored into the price. A parking restriction zone and extra services such as a shared load round off the calculation.

Crockery on a move to another city
On long routes the shaking lasts longer – full boxes with no room for movement are even more important on a long-distance move. We plan such moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) – more under Long-distance moves and in the Locations overview.
