Moving plants

Moving plants: last in, first out

Well prepared

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and loads large tubs securely and last.

Plants are living things and react sensitively to cold, heat, darkness and vibration. A houseplant survives the move best if it is watered for the last time two or three days beforehand, pruned if necessary and well padded in its pot. It is best to take small and delicate plants with you in your own car; large tubs go into the lorry last and come out first.

Important to know: for damage arising from the particular risk of transporting living plants, the moving company is released from liability under § 451d (1) no. 6 HGB. So with a long-distance move, take the season into account and protect plants from frost in winter and from heat in the closed cargo area in summer. For a private move with many tubs, discuss space and order at the survey; more under Private move.

LIVING CARGO

What is different about plants

Climate, space and liability

Plants are living things and react to cold, heat, darkness and vibration. The law takes this into account: the moving company is not liable for damage arising from the particular risk of transporting living plants (§ 451d (1) no. 6 HGB). We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and load large potted plants securely and last; small and delicate plants are best off travelling with you in the car.

Load last

Plants go into the moving van last and come out first – so they spend as little time as possible in the dark cargo area.

Load securely

Large tubs stand secured at the side with nothing heavy on top; small pots go into open, padded boxes so they get air and do not fall over.

Mind the climate

In frost or heat, plants suffer in the closed cargo area. Delicate species are better off travelling in the car with you, where you control temperature and light.

Know the liability rules

The moving company is not liable for damage arising from the particular risk of transporting living plants (§ 451d HGB) – so drive valuable exotic plants yourself.
WELL PREPARED

Six steps for moving plants

Some plants have great sentimental value, others are expensive exotics. Because liability for transporting living plants is limited, good preparation is all the more worthwhile. These six steps help your plants survive the move well.

01

Water two days before

Water for the last time two to three days before the move – the soil stays moist, but nothing leaks in the van and softens boxes or furniture.
02

Prune

Carefully prune or tie together long shoots and large plants; this saves space and protects against kinking.
03

Secure the pots

Wrap the pot in paper or film and cover the soil on top with paper; stand small pots close together in open boxes and fill gaps with paper.
04

Protect the leaves

Loosely wrap delicate leaves in paper; in cold weather add a blanket or fleece, never airtight in plastic.
05

Take them yourself

Orchids, exotics and cuttings are best transported in your own car – there you have light and temperature under control.
06

Let them settle in

After moving in, unpack immediately, place in a bright spot without direct sun or draughts and only repot after a few days.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Move affordably with a part load

Yes for furniture, only partly for plants
With a shared load you only pay for the cargo space your furniture and boxes need. Because delivery takes place within a time window and consignments may be on the road for longer, it is not well suited to living plants. It is better to take plants with you yourself while the furniture travels by shared load.

Anything that lives needs its own planning

A move does not just involve furniture and boxes but often also plants, aquariums or pets – anything that lives needs its own planning. Plants go into the lorry last and come out first; with a private move within Berlin, they are usually only on the road for a short time. With a long-distance move, the season matters: frost in winter and heat in summer take their toll on plants in the closed cargo area.

Preparation

Water for the last time two to three days beforehand, prune or tie together large plants and pad the pots. Decide early which plants travel in your own car and which go into the lorry, and say so at the survey so that space is planned for the tubs.

Loading

Plants go into the van last and stand secured with no load on top. During furniture transport, no boxes may be placed on tubs; small pots travel in open boxes so that they get air.

Settling in

Unload and unpack plants immediately, place them in a bright spot without direct sun and only water as usual after a few days. Postpone repotting and changes of position until the plant has recovered.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving plants

Watering, packing, climate, liability and arrival – answered briefly.
Yes, without preparation houseplants can suffer from vibration, cold, heat or drying out. Pad the pots, secure long shoots and do not leave plants standing in the dark cargo area for long. It is best to take delicate species with you in your own car.

How to prepare your plants for the move

Water plants for the last time two to three days before the move, so the soil stays moist but no water leaks out. Larger plants can be pruned or loosely tied together so they take up less space and stand more steadily. Pots can be secured with paper or bubble wrap, and the soil on top covered with paper.

Loosely wrap delicate leaves in paper, never airtight in plastic. With a long-distance move, load plants only shortly before departure and unload them first at the destination, so they do not stand in the dark cargo area for long. It is best to take small and delicate species with you in your own car.

Transport and climate: what matters

The closed cargo area is dark, and the temperature follows the weather: in winter, frost can damage tropical houseplants, and in summer the van heats up. So take the season into account, protect plants with blankets or fleece in cold weather and keep the time in the lorry short.

Important for your expectations: for damage arising from the particular risk of transporting living plants, the moving company is released from liability under § 451d (1) no. 6 HGB. Valuable exotics are therefore better transported yourself; when loading large tubs, we help by making sure they stand securely in the van.
