Packing fragile items: materials, technique and liability

Nothing gets broken

Unsere Firma Packing paper, small boxes and filled gaps – this is how glass, china and electronics arrive in the new flat in one piece.

When packing fragile items, the right technique decides the fate of your belongings. We rely on multi-layer packing paper, sturdy double-wall corrugated moving boxes and specially shaped dividers for glasses and crockery. Each piece is wrapped individually, and gaps are filled with bubble wrap or paper so that nothing slips during transport. This is how we reduce the risk of breakage to a minimum – you can sit back and relax.

For particularly delicate pieces such as crystal glasses, china or art objects, extra padding with foam or bubble wrap is worthwhile. Pictures, mirrors and screens need edge protection and are transported upright. Bear in mind: if you pack yourself, the removal company is only liable to a limited extent for breakage caused by inadequate packing (§ 451d HGB). If you want to hand over the risk, ask about our packing service – then we pack the fragile items ourselves.

WITH CARE

How we protect delicate items

Materials, technique, order

When packing items so they do not break, the right material and a fixed order count: heavy items at the bottom, light ones on top, no gaps in the box. On request we pack glass, china and electronics ourselves and secure the boxes in the loading space against slipping. We give you the price as a fixed price after a survey; we are liable for damage under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance for valuables is possible on request.

Packing service

We wrap glasses and plates individually, fill the gaps and label every box with the room and the note Fragile – glass.

Electronics

Televisions and monitors are best transported in their original packaging or with foam corners. Photographing and labelling the cables beforehand makes setting up easier.

Pictures and mirrors

Frames, glass panels and mirrors get edge protection and cardboard and are loaded upright – lying flat, they break more easily under load during transport.

Furniture transport

We secure display cabinets and glass doors with blankets and straps; loose glass shelves are removed and packed separately so that nothing rattles during furniture transport.
THE PACKING RULES

Six rules for fragile items

With glass and china, technique is what counts. With these six rules you pack fragile items so that they survive knocks, vibrations and being carried through the stairwell.

01

Small, sturdy boxes

Crockery belongs in small, sturdy boxes. Large boxes quickly become too heavy, bulge and tear at the bottom when carried.
02

Wrap individually

Every glass and every plate gets its own packing paper. Newspaper rubs off and has to be washed off again later.
03

Plates on edge

Plates stand vertically in the box like records, not stacked flat – this way the pressure from knocks is distributed across the edges.
04

Fill all gaps

Fill gaps with crumpled paper or towels. Shake the box gently – if nothing rattles, it is packed correctly.
05

Label clearly

"Fragile – glass" and an arrow pointing up on at least two sides – this way the box is loaded the right way up and on top.
06

Report damage immediately

Report visible damage no later than the day after delivery and hidden damage within 14 days (§ 451f HGB) – otherwise the claim lapses.
SMALL LOADS

Part load with fragile items

Ideal for a few items
With a part load, several orders share the loading space on the same route. For fragile items, this means boxes must be packed and labelled particularly carefully, because they stand next to other people's goods. We load delicate boxes on top and secure them against slipping – allow a little more padding material for this when packing.

ALL ABOUT PACKING

From
the box to setting up

We take care of every detail

Besides packing fragile items, we support you with every step of the move – from dismantling the furniture to setting it up in the new flat. Whether kitchen appliances, works of art or delicate electronics: there is the right packaging for every item. How to pack plates and glasses step by step is shown in the article Packing crockery and glasses safely. Even with a private move over long distances, for example with long-distance moves, your belongings stay safely stowed.

A packing plan instead of packing chaos

Start with the display cabinet and rarely used crockery; everyday glasses come last. That way your private move, senior move or student move stays organised and nothing is packed in a hurry.

Materials, boxes, padding

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and flexible small transport, glass, mirrors and electronics arrive in one piece – even through narrow stairwells and over long distances.

Liability, value, special cases

Antiques, art or laboratory equipment in an office move need their own solutions. Clarify in advance whether additional insurance makes sense – also with a part load or furniture taxi.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about packing fragile items

Materials, technique, liability and time.
Packing paper combined with bubble wrap works best. Each glass is wrapped individually and placed in sturdy boxes with dividing layers. This creates break-proof protection that reliably absorbs knocks and vibrations during transport.

The right technique for every material

Glass and china need multi-layer packing paper and enough padding material between the individual pieces. It is important that boxes are never loaded too heavily and are always transported upright – ideally clearly labelled "Fragile – glass".

Electronic devices such as televisions or speakers should ideally be secured in their original packaging or with special foam corners. Photographing the cables beforehand and packing them separately makes reassembly enormously easier.

Avoiding common packing mistakes

A common mistake is too little padding material or stacking heavy boxes on top of fragile ones. Half-full boxes in which items slip around also often lead to breakage during transport.

Just as important: never overload boxes, so that they stay stable and do not tear when carried. Also bear in mind that the removal company's liability is limited for boxes you pack yourself. If you are unsure, leave the break-proof packing entirely to us.
