Packing for a move

Packing properly: rules that prevent breakages and needless hauling

Guide

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and, on request, packs the kitchen and everything fragile.

Well packed is half moved. The most important rules are simple: heavy items such as books go in small boxes, light items such as bedding in large ones. Every box is filled to the top so that it does not buckle when stacked, and stays light enough for one person to carry it safely. Plates stand upright, glasses are wrapped individually in paper, and gaps are filled with towels or paper.

Label every box on two sides with its destination room and contents, so that it ends up in the right place in your new home without any questions. Transport documents, jewellery and medication yourself. If you are short of time, have it packed: more on this under Packing service. Better to pack a week too early than an evening too late, and leave the kitchen and bathroom until last.

Packing service as an item in the fixed price

On request we pack the kitchen, glasses, pictures and electronics and bring the materials. After a survey we quote a fixed price in which the packing service appears as a separate item. Enquiries on 01625978461. Whatever you pack yourself, you save; many people only have us pack the kitchen and glassware.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

FROM BERLIN

What we take care of when packing

Everything or just the fragile items

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, on request, pack the whole household or just the tricky parts: crockery, glasses, pictures, mirrors, lamps and electronics. We bring materials such as boxes, tissue paper and bubble wrap and label by destination room. Many customers pack books and clothes themselves. We are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for boxes you pack yourself, liability for the contents is limited.

Kitchen and glasses

Plates upright, glasses wrapped individually, gaps filled – the kitchen is the most time-consuming part of packing and well worth the packing service.

Pictures and mirrors

We pad glass and frames with edge protectors and cardboard, stand them upright and clearly mark them as fragile for transport.

Electronics kept safe

Televisions and computers are best in their original packaging, otherwise padded; cables labelled in a bag – during furniture transport they stand upright.

Materials included

We bring boxes in two sizes, tissue paper, bubble wrap and tape; the materials are listed separately in the fixed price.
PACKING PROPERLY

Six packing rules

These six rules make the biggest difference when packing – for safe carrying, few breakages and quick unpacking. If you follow them, you need less time on moving day and will find considerably fewer shards when unpacking.

01

Heavy in small

Books, files and crockery in small boxes, bedding and cushions in large ones – that way every box stays carryable and does not tear.
02

Pack full

Half-empty boxes buckle when stacked; fill gaps with towels or paper until the lid closes flat.
03

Plates upright

Plates stand upright as in a dishwasher, each wrapped individually in paper; that spreads the pressure better than in a stack. The same goes for mugs and cups.
04

Label on two sides

Write the destination room and contents on two sides, not just on top – otherwise stacked boxes cannot be seen and end up in the wrong room.
05

Rarely used items first

Pack the cellar, books and seasonal clothing first, and the kitchen and bathroom last – that way everyday life remains possible until shortly before the move.
06

Valuables with you

Documents, jewellery, cash and medication go into a bag you carry yourself – never between the boxes in the lorry.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Well packed, sent cheaply

Shared load for a few boxes
With a shared load, several consignments share the cargo space on the same route. For a few boxes and single pieces of furniture, this lowers the costs considerably. Pack especially sturdily for this and label every box with your name and destination address as well, so that nothing gets mixed up.

IN THREE STEPS

Prepare,
pack, label

From an empty box to a finished stack

Packing works in three steps: prepare materials and the order, pack room by room, label and stack. How to fill boxes without wasting space is shown in the article Filling moving boxes efficiently; another guide explains a colour system for labelling. If you are short of time, the article on quick last-minute packing gives you an order for the final days before the move.

Preparation

Get boxes in two sizes, paper, bubble wrap, tape and thick markers; draw up a room plan of the new flat with numbers or colours. Then packing begins with the cellar, books and seasonal clothing. That way you know immediately where each box belongs.

Packing

Room by room, heavy in small, light in large, gaps filled. Fragile items wrapped individually and marked as such. With a packing service for the kitchen and glassware, you save yourself the most laborious work and the greatest risk.

Label and stack

Destination room and contents on two sides, heavy boxes at the bottom, light ones on top, fragile items at the very top. That way, on moving day everything goes into the lorry quickly during furniture transport, and in your new home straight into the right room.

FAQ

Questions about packing properly

Number of boxes, timing, materials, clothing, electronics, plants and weight – answered briefly.
A fixed number would be a guess, because it depends on books, crockery and clothing. Count shelf metres and wardrobes and have a few more boxes ready rather than too few; unused ones can be passed on. During the survey, we estimate the amount together with you.

The right order for packing

Start with the rooms you use least, such as the cellar, attic or guest room. That way you avoid chaos in everyday life and can pack systematically at your own pace. The kitchen and bathroom should only be tackled shortly before moving day, as these rooms are used every day.

Pack up one room completely before moving on to the next – that makes it easier to find things later. Label every box with its destination room and a short description of the contents to save time when unpacking.

Securing fragile items properly

Crockery, glasses and decorative items need special protection during transport. Wrap every single item in packing paper or bubble wrap and fill gaps in the boxes with newspaper or towels. That prevents items from shifting and being damaged during the journey.

For particularly delicate pieces, use special crockery boxes with compartments. Mark these boxes clearly with “Fragile – handle with care” so that our team takes particular care when carrying them. That way everything arrives intact at your new home.

Moving costs in detail – how the prices are composed

The exact cost of your move depends on several factors. The following prices serve as a rough guide: 1-room flat from €354, 2-room flat from €579, 3-room flat from €909, 4-room flat from €1,324. For larger properties such as a house or villa, we prepare an individual quote. If you are moving further away, the long-distance move from €4.15/km applies. Feel free to arrange a free survey to clarify all the details.

These factors determine your moving price

  • Distance: from €4.15/km
  • Total volume of the household goods
  • Floor without a lift
  • Need for a parking restriction zone

Additional options: furniture assembly, shared load.
