Vacuum bags & saving space

Packing tip
Vacuum bags: textiles flat, boxes saved
Air out, space free
Vacuum bags are among the simplest aids for saving volume when moving. Duvets, pillows, winter coats and soft toys consist largely of air and can therefore be compressed to a fraction of their volume. As a result you need fewer moving boxes, and fewer cubic metres also have an effect on the fixed price we give you after the survey. They achieve the most with bulky textiles and hardly anything with firm clothing.
On a long-distance move in particular, every cubic metre saved in the loading space pays off. Further details on how we work can be found under Private move. We advise you on which textiles are suitable for vacuum packing and which are better off travelling in wardrobe boxes. Important: vacuum-packed bags always belong in sturdy boxes – loose, they are slippery and tear easily on edges. That makes your move space-saving and stress-free.

How we save space when packing
Volume out, order in
Well-thought-out packing saves loading space and trips carrying things. We use vacuum bags where they really help – for bedding, pillows and thick coats – and pack books, crockery and electronics the classic way in suitable boxes. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB; § 451e: €620 per m³). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive nationwide – destinations are listed under Locations.

Less volume, part load
For smaller volumes we offer a part load to save costs. It goes well with space-saving packing, because with a part load what mainly counts is the volume your belongings take up in the loading space – collection and delivery take place within a time window.

Saving
space beyond vacuum bags
Besides vacuum bags there are other ways to save space and money when moving: roll clothes instead of folding them, nest pots inside one another, fill gaps with towels and use boxes of uniform sizes. With a private move too, it pays to declutter early. How best to fill boxes is explained in the article Filling moving boxes to save space.

Frequently asked questions on vacuum bags when moving
Which items are suitable for vacuum bags?
Textiles containing a lot of air are particularly well suited to vacuum bags: duvets, pillows, sleeping bags, towels, thick jumpers and winter coats. They can be compressed considerably without being damaged and, once compressed, take up only a fraction of their original space.
Less suitable are silk, suits, leather jackets and clothing that should not crease. High-quality down tolerates compression for the duration of the transport; afterwards you should open the bags immediately and shake out the duvets. For firm clothing such as jeans, vacuum-packing saves hardly any space.
Using vacuum bags correctly – here's how
To make the best use of vacuum bags, the textiles should be clean and dry before they are packed. The air is then removed either with a vacuum cleaner or by rolling the bag up by hand, which considerably reduces the volume.
It is important to then stow the vacuum-packed bags firmly in moving boxes so that they are not damaged during transport. If needed, our movers take over this whole process for you, so you can sit back and relax.
What the move costs depending on size
| Size | Starting price |
|---|---|
| 1 room | €365 |
| 2 rooms | €605 |
| 3 rooms | €899 |
| 4 rooms | €1,279 |
| House/villa | individual |
| Long-distance move | €4.25/km |
How much volume you save by packing compactly is something we see during a free survey.
Volume and other price factors
The most important levers are volume, distance (from €4.25/km), floor and a possibly missing lift. A no-parking zone can also mean extra effort. Anyone booking furniture assembly or a part load should factor this in as well.
