Senior Move

Organising a senior move: calm for the parents, clear tasks for the family

Move stress-free

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and works quietly and according to plan on moving day, bed and armchair first.

A senior move becomes stressful when too many people want to decide at the same time and nobody is keeping an eye on the parents. A simple division of roles has proven its worth: one person from the family keeps the list and talks to the landlord, the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) and the moving company. A second person accompanies the mother or father on moving day – from breakfast in the old flat to the first evening in the new one. The moving company takes care of the boxes, the furniture and the journey in between.

The order also keeps things calm: in the new flat the bed, favourite armchair, lamps and the bag with medication are set up first, then everything else. If possible, spend moving day with family or neighbours and only arrive once the bedroom is ready. How we support senior moves is described under Senior move. And very important: the parents have a say in what comes along and where it goes. Those who have a say feel at home in the new place more quickly – even if saying goodbye to the old flat is hard.

Who does what on moving day

Family, parents, moving team

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a senior move, take on packing on request, dismantling, transport and assembly according to the floor plan, the parking restriction and disposal of what is not coming along. The family keeps the list, the applications and the accompaniment; the parents decide what comes along and where it goes. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for antiques, additional insurance is possible.

One contact person

On moving day, one person from the family answers all the team's questions; this way the parents do not have to keep making decisions during the senior move.

One companion

A second person accompanies the mother or father all day, takes care of breaks, food and medication and stays calm when things get noisy.

Bedroom first

We set up the bed, bedside table, lamps and favourite armchair first, so the first evening feels familiar – with furniture transport by floor plan.

Packing without rush

On request we pack the kitchen, books and display cabinets; the family packs personal things together with the parents – with a packing service by room.

Six tricks for a calm move

A calm senior move depends on small things that can be done beforehand. These six tricks cost little and take a lot of pressure off everyone. They apply to a smaller flat just as much as to a care home room.

01

Floor plan with furniture

Draw the bed, armchair and wardrobes into the floor plan; the parents see beforehand what the new flat will look like – and the team knows where everything goes.
02

A bag for the day

ID, medication, glasses, hearing aid, phone and charger in a bag that never goes into the lorry but stays with the companion.
03

Familiar things first

Pictures, a blanket and the favourite mug in a box of their own that is unpacked first – this turns the unfamiliar flat into a home more quickly.
04

Plan in breaks

Moving day is tiring even for onlookers; plan lunch and a quiet break away from the hustle and bustle.
05

Inform the neighbours

A note in the hallway announces the lorry and the parking restriction; neighbours are often happy to help with farewells or a cup of coffee.
06

Let the care service know

The care service, home emergency call and meals on wheels need the new address and the moving date, so that nothing is missed on the first day.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Only a few pieces?

Shared load for single items
With a shared load, several consignments share the loading area on the same route. For individual pieces of furniture or boxes, this lowers the costs considerably. You get a time window instead of a fixed date; it is better to plan the bed, armchair and medication on a fixed date for moving-in day, so that the first night is calm.

IN THREE PHASES

Prepare,
move, settle in

How the steps fit together

A calm senior move has three phases: preparation with a floor plan and tasks, moving day with a companion, and settling in with familiar things. The mistakes families make most often are shown in the article Senior move: avoiding mistakes. If someone is moving to the children in another city, you will find information under long-distance moves.

Preparation

Draw the floor plan, sort things out, share the tasks in the family, ask the care insurance fund, fix the date: dealing with these points weeks beforehand means a calm last week instead of a rush during the senior move.

Moving

One contact person for the team, one companion for the parents, the bag to hand: with a packing service and furniture transport nobody in the family has to carry anything heavy, and the day goes to plan.

Settling in

Bed, armchair and lamps first, then the box of familiar things, then the rest. In the two weeks afterwards come registration, pension insurance and health insurance – then the move is also done on paper. Do not forget the care service and home emergency call.

FAQ

Questions about organising a senior move

Costs, lead time, packing, liability, care home, relatives and long-distance moves – answered briefly.
The costs depend on volume, floor, lift and extras such as packing, unpacking or storage. Guide prices by number of rooms are in the price overview on this page; we give you the fixed price after a free survey. The tax bonus and, with a care level, a grant from the care insurance fund can lower the costs.

How a senior move works

It starts with a calm survey, relatives are welcome. We go through the floor plan of the new flat with you, clarify what comes along, what should be packed and where the lorry can stop. We then give you a fixed price with every item listed. At the same time, the family shares out the tasks: who keeps the list, who talks to the care insurance fund and the landlord, who accompanies on moving day?

On moving day we pack the last boxes on request, dismantle and transport. In the new flat we first set up the bed, bedside table, lamps and armchair, then the wardrobes and kitchen according to the floor plan. The parents are best spending the day with their companion away from the hustle and bustle, arriving once the bedroom is ready.

Typical situations in the senior move

Most senior moves are to a smaller, low-barrier flat, into assisted living or into a care home. In the first case part of the furniture comes along; in a care home often only an armchair, a chest of drawers and pictures. Children often organise the move from another city – in that case a family member who lives nearby helps as a fixed contact for the landlord, the home and the moving company.

With a care level (Pflegegrad), a call to the care insurance fund before the move is worthwhile: under § 40 (4) SGB XI up to €4,180 per measure is possible for measures to improve the living environment if this makes care at home possible or easier; the fund decides case by case whether the move counts. For privately arranged moves, 20% of the labour costs also reduce tax (§ 35a EStG).

Calculating the moving price: these criteria count

Every price calculation is based on the volume and the distance, which is charged from €4.20/km. Then there are the floor, lift and any parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone). For furniture assembly and small transports we also recommend furniture assembly and a shared load.
