Senior moves

Senior move: costs, subsidies and a pace that suits

Understanding costs

Unsere Firma A smaller flat, assisted living or a care home: when moving in later life, planning matters more than speed.

A senior move calls for sensitivity, because it is about more than transporting furniture – it is about memories and a new stage of life. We take time for the initial conversation, plan a pace that suits the person and coordinate with relatives or carers. Often only part of the household comes along because the new flat or the room in the care home is smaller; what stays and what comes along, we clarify together beforehand.

On request we take care of packing, dismantling and reassembly of the furniture, unpacking and putting things away, and clearing out items that are no longer needed. Official errands such as registering the new address within two weeks are handled by relatives or carers; we give you the moving day early for this. We are happy to pack keepsakes in their own labelled boxes, which are unpacked first. Important for the costs: the long-term care fund (Pflegekasse) can subsidise a move to a more suitable home. For a move without special requirements, see Private move.

PERSONAL ADVICE

Discuss your senior move calmly and receive a fixed price

Initial talk, survey, clear quote

Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a survey appointment for the senior move, ideally together with relatives. We discuss all the details calmly and then give you a fixed price. On request we also send the quote to children or carers so that everyone is up to date. For damage we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB); additional insurance for valuable items is available.

Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

PATIENCE AND CARE

What you can rely on with a senior move

Patiently planned, carefully carried

Moving home in later life brings its own challenges: less space, health restrictions and many keepsakes. We plan the senior move with more time, discuss the process with the family and set up the new flat so that routes are short and trip hazards are removed. We state the price as a fixed price after the survey. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and also handle long-distance moves to be near the children; destinations with their own page are listed under locations.

Packing with time

We pack room by room and leave time for decisions. Keepsakes get their own labelled boxes with our packing service.

Downsizing

If not everything fits into the new flat, we collect the rest through a house clearance or put it into storage. Less volume also lowers the price.

Setting up

We set up the bed, armchair and favourite pieces according to plan, so that the new flat quickly feels familiar and routes stay clear during the senior move.

Involving relatives

If the children live far away, we arrange dates by phone and send the quote in writing. That way everyone keeps track of the move.
COSTS AND SUBSIDIES

What sets the price

The costs of a senior move depend mainly on how much comes along, how accessible the flats are and which additional services are needed. Part of it can be recovered through the long-term care fund or your tax return.

01

Volume taken along

If only part of the household comes along, the volume drops considerably. Sorting out early means paying less for the transport during the move.
02

Floor and lift

An old building without a lift, a care home with a goods lift: access at both addresses determines the carrying time.
03

House clearance

What does not come along has to go. A house clearance is a separate item in the quote and can take place on the same date as the move – that saves journeys.
04

Assembly and setting up

Dismantling, reassembly and filling cupboards take time but take a lot of weight off your shoulders. Whatever is wanted is listed separately in the quote.
05

Care fund subsidy

If there is a care grade (Pflegegrad), the long-term care fund can subsidise a move to a more suitable home with up to €4,180. Ask before the move.
06

Tax benefit

As a household-related service, 20% of the removal firm's labour costs reduce income tax – with an invoice and bank transfer (§ 35a EStG).
SMALL LOADS

A few pieces of furniture as a part load

When only one room comes along
A part load saves costs because empty runs are avoided: single pieces of furniture, boxes and keepsakes travel along on a route that is planned anyway. Well suited when parents move to be near their children in another city and take only a little with them – with an agreed collection window and secured cargo.

MOVING IN LATER LIFE

More
than an ordinary move

Flat, care home, assisted living

A senior move differs from an ordinary move because health restrictions and attachment to the old home often play a role. Topics such as a low-barrier new flat, downsizing the household and aids such as a care bed or rollator become more important. When moving into a care home, ask beforehand which of your own furniture is allowed in the room. If there is a care grade, it is worth calling the long-term care fund about a subsidy before the move. More about our service under Senior move.

Plan early and together

Floor plan of the new flat, list of favourite pieces, a date with the family: a senior move needs more lead time than a private move – quite unlike a quick student move.

Downsizing without stress

With a packing service, gentle furniture transport and a small transport for stragglers, only the pieces that really fit into the new, often smaller flat come along.

Costs, date, special cases

Single pieces of furniture to the children as a part load or by furniture taxi; clarify the care bed, rollator and other aids in good time with the medical supply store and the long-term care fund.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on costs and subsidies for a senior move

Answers on price, the long-term care fund, tax and the process.
There is no reliable average price, because the volume taken along, floors, distance and additional services such as house clearance or assembly vary widely. The starting prices by number of rooms in our price list serve as a guide. After the survey you receive a fixed price; a subsidy from the long-term care fund or the tax benefit under § 35a EStG can reduce your own share.

How a senior move works

The process of a senior move begins with a free consultation in which we discuss the scope and any special wishes – ideally with relatives. We then set a schedule that suits the person's pace. A floor plan of the new flat, showing where the bed, armchair and cupboards will go, is helpful. Before moving day things are sorted out: what does not come along we collect through a house clearance or put into storage, or you pass it on to family or charities.

On moving day our team takes care of the transport, furniture assembly and, on request, putting things away in the new flat. We place the bed, armchair and familiar pieces so that the new surroundings quickly feel homely and routes stay free of trip hazards. Whatever is booked is listed separately in the quote beforehand.

Cost factors and who contributes

The costs of a senior move depend on the distance, the volume taken along and additional services such as house clearance, assembly or putting things away. A stairwell without a lift or a required furniture lift also affects the price. If only a few pieces of furniture are moving into a room in a care home, the effort is considerably smaller than for a complete flat. There is no reliable average figure; you receive a fixed price after the survey.

If there is a care grade, the long-term care fund can subsidise a move to a home that better suits the person's needs as a measure to improve the living environment – up to €4,180 per measure (§ 40(4) SGB XI). Submit the application before the move and enclose the quote. In addition, 20% of the labour costs reduce your tax as a household-related service (§ 35a EStG).

Starting prices by flat size

  • Small (1 room): from €354
  • Medium (2 rooms): from €584
  • Large (3 rooms): from €899
  • Very large (4 rooms): from €1,344
  • House/villa: individual quote
  • Long-distance move: from €3.95/km

For an exact quote we recommend a free survey.

What makes a senior move more or less expensive

Besides the volume that actually comes along, the distance between the old and new flat plays a role – here we calculate €3.95/km. The floor, the lift and a possible no-parking zone are also factored in. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load complement the quote.

Services around moving in later life

These building blocks can be combined for the senior move.

  1. Part load (Part load) for a few pieces of furniture
  2. Furniture transport (Furniture transport) for single items
  3. Private move (Private move) for the whole household
  4. Company move (Company move) for a practice or office
  5. House clearance (House clearance) for everything that stays behind
  6. Move with assembly (Move with assembly) including reassembly

To the children in another city

When parents move to be near their children, there is often a long distance in between. We are based in Berlin and travel nationwide; destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview, and for longer distances see our long-distance moves.
