Senior move: what families want to know beforehand

Frequent questions

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and is happy to answer your questions about the move with the whole family too.

Before a senior move, families have many questions: will the long-term care insurance fund (Pflegekasse) contribute? What can be taken into a care home? Who packs when the parents can no longer do it? The answers below are short and set out the rules that apply to everyone – such as the grant for measures to improve the living environment under § 40 (4) SGB XI, which can be up to €4,180 per measure.

Much depends, however, on the flat, the health and the wishes of the older person. That is why we survey calmly, relatives are welcome, and only then give you a fixed price. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. How we support senior moves is described under Senior move.

FROM BERLIN

What we take on for a senior move

In brief

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a senior move, take on packing and unpacking on request, dismantling, transport and assembly of the furniture according to the floor plan, the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone), storage and disposal of what is not coming along. Applications to the care insurance fund, the home or the authorities, care and accompaniment are up to the family and the care service. For very valuable items, additional insurance is possible.

Packing and unpacking

On request we pack crockery, books and keepsakes and unpack them again in the new flat – box by box with our packing service.

Assembly by floor plan

By the evening, the bed, armchair and wardrobes are where they are drawn in the floor plan, and the paths stay clear – as part of furniture transport.

Storage

If the care home place is not free yet or the family wants to decide later, we put furniture and boxes into interim storage – with storage as a separate item.

Disposal

Whatever neither the family nor a charity shop takes we remove for disposal on request, so that the old flat is handed over empty.
AT A GLANCE

Six answers in one sentence

The most common questions about a senior move can each be answered in one sentence. Everything is covered in more detail in the FAQ section below, with the rules the answers are based on.

01

Care insurance fund

With a care level (Pflegegrad), up to €4,180 per measure is possible if care at home is made easier; the application goes to the care insurance fund before starting.
02

Giving notice

Tenants give three months' notice, no later than the third working day of a month – generally also when moving into a care home.
03

Costs

The price depends on volume, floor, lift and extras; we give you the fixed price after a free survey of the flat.
04

Tax

For privately arranged moves, 20% of the labour costs, up to €4,000 a year, reduce income tax (§ 35a EStG).
05

Liability

The moving company is liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for antiques or jewellery, additional insurance is worthwhile.
06

Registration

Into a flat within two weeks; a special rule under § 32 BMG applies to care homes – ask the home or the registration office (Bürgeramt).
FOR SMALL LOADS

Only a few pieces of furniture for the home?

Shared load for single items
With a shared load, several consignments share the loading area on the same route. For individual pieces of furniture or boxes, this lowers the costs considerably. You get a time window instead of a fixed date; whatever should be ready in the home on moving-in day – bed, armchair, favourite pictures – is better moved on a fixed date.

The questions by phase

The questions about a senior move fall into three phases: deadlines, applications and choosing furniture beforehand, packing and accompaniment on moving day, re-registration and changes of address afterwards. A week-by-week schedule is offered in the article Planning a senior move. If someone is moving to the children in another city, you will find information under long-distance moves; for single pieces of furniture there is furniture transport.

Beforehand: deadlines and applications

Notice three months beforehand, asking the care insurance fund before commissioning anything, getting the floor plan of the new flat: these questions come first in a senior move and determine the whole schedule that follows. Starting early means you can sort and decide calmly.

On moving day

Who packs, who accompanies, what comes first? With a packing service and furniture transport the older person does not have to carry anything, a familiar person accompanies, and the bed and armchair are set up first.

Afterwards

Registration, pension insurance, health insurance, bank and home emergency call: the last round of questions concerns the move on paper and can be dealt with together in a few days using a short list. Remember the doctor and care service too.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about senior moves

Costs, lead time, packing, liability, care home, shared load and health – answered briefly.
A senior move is a move by older people, often from a large flat into a smaller one, into assisted living or into a care home. The focus is on sorting out, keepsakes and barriers, sometimes also an application to the care insurance fund. On request the moving company does the packing and unpacking so that nobody has to lift anything heavy.

How a senior move works

It starts with a calm survey, relatives are welcome. We go through the floor plan of the new flat, clarify what comes along and then give you a fixed price. In the weeks up to the move, things are sorted out and packed, by us if you wish.

On moving day a familiar person accompanies. We dismantle, transport and set up the furniture according to the floor plan, bed and armchair first. Then come registration and changes of address.

Typical situations in the senior move

Most senior moves are to a smaller, low-barrier flat, into assisted living or into a care home. In the first case part of the furniture comes along; in a care home often only an armchair, a chest of drawers and pictures. Anyone with a care level asks the care insurance fund about a grant beforehand; the fund decides case by case whether the move counts.

Children often organise the move from another city. In that case a fixed family contact near the parents helps, as does a date when everyone can be there.

Understanding moving costs: the key factors

The amount of the moving costs depends on distance (from €3.95/km), volume and local conditions such as the floor or a lift. A required parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) adds to the effort. Further services such as furniture assembly or a shared load can be calculated separately.
