New flat not ready to move into: storage and interim options for commuters

Commuter guide, part 6
Flat not ready yet, start date at work fixed
Store, bridge the gap
A new build is finished later, the previous tenant does not move out on time, the renovation takes longer: then there is a gap between moving out and moving in. For commuters this is particularly tricky, because the employer does not wait – the first working day at the new location or the fixed shift remains. Now a clear plan helps: where does the furniture go, where do you sleep, and how do you get to work during this time?
The most common solution is storage: furniture and boxes go into storage on moving-out day and are delivered as soon as the new flat is ready. For yourself, you need an interim solution – a furnished apartment, a temporary room or friends. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we plan both trips, moving out and the later delivery, and give you a fixed price after the survey. More under Storage.

Store first, then move in
Two appointments, one fixed price after a survey
Once it is clear that moving in will be delayed, call us on 01625978461. We plan the move-out with storage and the later delivery to the new flat. After the survey we give you a fixed price for both steps. That way the handover of the old flat stays on the agreed date.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we link moving out, storage and moving in
Two appointments, one contact person
If moving out and moving in do not fall on the same day, one move becomes two: moving out with storage, and delivery to the new flat. We plan both appointments and label the boxes so that during the interim period you can get to what you need – work clothes, laptop, paperwork. You pack the box for the interim accommodation separately. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and drive within the city and nationwide. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

What matters in the time between two flats
The interim period can be planned if a few things are settled early. Commuters should clarify these points as soon as it is clear that moving in will be delayed – ideally in writing with the landlord or developer.

Part load: little furniture, flexible delivery
If you only have a little furniture and a few boxes, a part load is an affordable option: your belongings travel with other jobs. Especially when moving in is delayed this fits well, because the delivery day becomes flexible. There is a time window rather than a fixed time.

When
there is time between the old and the new flat
If moving out and moving in are some time apart, commuters face three questions: where does the furniture stay, where do you live yourself, and how do you get to work during this time? For the furniture there is storage; for you, interim accommodation or a temporary room. You should test the route to work from there once, because it will apply for weeks. If the new job takes you to another city, the interim accommodation can be there and the furniture follows later – more under Long-distance moves.

Frequently asked questions when moving out and moving in do not match up
When moving in is delayed: secure the dates first
If you find out that the new flat will not be ready to move into on time, first clarify two dates: by when do you have to hand over the old flat, and when can you definitely move in? Have the new moving-in date given to you in writing. Check whether you can agree a later move-out with your old landlord – this is often the simplest solution.
If that is not possible, you need a plan for the furniture and for yourself. Talk to your employer early if the interim period makes your journey to work longer or if you need an extra day off for the second appointment.
Storage, interim accommodation and the route to work
For the furniture, storage is a good option: it is loaded when you move out, stored and later delivered to the new flat. Pack separately what you need during the interim period – work clothes, laptop, paperwork, medication. For yourself, a furnished apartment, a temporary room or a place with friends are all possibilities.
Test the route to work from the interim address. On the registration requirement: if you are registered and move into a flat for no more than six months, you do not have to register or deregister there (§ 27 (2) BMG). Clarify your case with the registration office (Bürgeramt).
