Living in Ústí
A fresh start on the Elbe: Ústí nad Labem at a glance
Districts, work, offices
Ústí nad Labem, Aussig in German, lies at the confluence of the Bílina and the Elbe, around 48 km as the crow flies south-south-east of Dresden. With just under 92,000 inhabitants, the city is the centre of the northern Bohemian industrial area and the seat of the Ústecký kraj region. The D8 motorway between Dresden and Prague runs to the west of the city, and there is also a major railway junction and the Elbe as a waterway. Above the right bank of the Elbe towers the castle ruin of Střekov (Schreckenstein), and since 1998 the Mariánský most cable-stayed bridge has connected the banks.

Frequently asked questions about living in Ústí nad Labem
Město, Severní Terasa, Neštěmice, Střekov: the districts of Ústí
Ústí nad Labem is divided into four city districts with their own offices: Ústí nad Labem-město with the city centre, Severní Terasa, Neštěmice and Střekov. In total the city has 22 localities, including Klíše, Krásné Březno, Bukov, Předlice, Vaňov and Skřivánek. For dealing with the authorities it is important to know which district your new address belongs to.
The centre lies on the left bank of the Elbe at the mouth of the Bílina. On the right bank, the castle ruin of Střekov (Schreckenstein) rises above the river; it has belonged to the Lobkowicz family since 1564, and the district of the same name lies on this side of the river. The two banks are connected by, among others, the Mariánský most cable-stayed bridge, opened in 1998. Which location suits you depends on your commute and type of home – we check access and the parking spot for each address individually.
Working, studying and living in Ústí
Ústí nad Labem is regarded as the centre of the northern Bohemian industrial and metropolitan area. According to Wikipedia, the most important employer is the chemicals group Spolchemie, which produces basic and speciality chemicals. Then there are administration, trade, logistics around the D8 and the railway junction, and the Jan Evangelista Purkyně University (UJEP). It was founded in 1991 and has around 7,500 students, which also makes the city interesting for young people and skilled workers.
Quality of life comes above all from the location in the Elbe valley with slopes, forests and the view of Střekov Castle. Dresden is close, and Prague is easy to reach via the D8. Anyone coming from Germany should know the registration obligation: for a stay of more than 30 days, EU citizens report their place of residence to the foreigners' police. We do not give specific rents here because they vary greatly by district and building.

Ústí nad Labem (Aussig): city districts, traffic portal and parking ban on moving day
According to its administration portal, the city of Ústí nad Labem is divided into four city districts with their own offices: Město (city centre), Neštěmice, Severní Terasa and Střekov. If you are looking for a flat, it is worth checking which district the address belongs to, because matters may be handled by the respective district office.
For traffic questions, the city refers to the traffic portal of the municipal authority, which belongs to the Department of Transport and Property (Odbor dopravy a majetku). According to our check, this portal contains no information on parking bans, special use of roads or traffic signs for moves. So we ask the municipal authority in good time whether a permit is needed for the removal van in front of your new address, and have the answer confirmed in writing.
Contact according to the city portal: Statutární město Ústí nad Labem, Velká Hradební 2336, 401 00 Ústí nad Labem, telephone +420 475 271 111, email [email protected].
We plan the journey from Berlin, access to the address and the time window after the survey and obtain all the necessary information in advance. Our long-distance moving guide for Ústí nad Labem explains the process and costs of the route; general information can be found in Moving to the Czech Republic: costs and planning.
Registration and change of address in Ústí nad Labem as an EU citizen
After arriving in Ústí nad Labem, as an EU citizen you have to complete certain registrations. According to the Czech government portal (portal.gov.cz), for a stay expected to exceed 30 days you report your place of residence within 30 days of entry to the foreigners' police (cizinecká policie) at your place of residence. You can get the official registration form on the foreigners' police website, and according to the portal there is no fee.
If you later move within the Czech Republic and already have a registration certificate, a different rule applies according to the information portal for foreigners (ipc.gov.cz): the change of address must be reported within 30 working days once it has actually taken place, and only if you will live at the new address for longer than 180 days. A Ministry of the Interior office is responsible. There you present your travel document, proof of accommodation and the completed form for reporting changes. The page states CZK 200 for a new document.
Anyone who fails to report commits an administrative offence according to the portal, which can be fined on the spot with up to CZK 3,000. So keep your tenancy agreement or proof of accommodation to hand on moving day. We answer further questions about the route as part of an international move.
