Moving to Ajaccio: overland to the port, by ferry to Corsica

Guide

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and brings your household goods overland and by ferry to Ajaccio.

A move to Ajaccio has one special feature: Corsica can only be reached by ferry or plane. Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica and seat of the Corse-du-Sud prefecture; with around 76,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city on the island. Ferries connect the port daily with Marseille, Toulon and Nice. The removal van drives overland from Berlin to a mainland port – it is around 1,540 km to Marseille – and crosses from there. Read more about long routes under Long-distance moves.

In Ajaccio itself, space is tight: the old town around the citadel has narrow lanes, and according to Wikipedia, traffic and parking are a problem, especially at rush hour and in the summer season. The removal van's parking space requires a permit from the city, which has been handled by the Service Voirie since 2024. We take care of packing, transport and furniture assembly, book the space on the ferry and, after the survey, give you a fixed price in which the crossing is a separate item. Our services for private customers can be found under Private move.

FROM BERLIN

What we take on for your move to Corsica

Road, ferry, assembly – one fixed price

Our base is Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); we do not have a branch in France or on Corsica. For your move, the lorry drives from Berlin to the mainland port and takes the ferry to Ajaccio. We choose the connection according to the timetable and the date of your flat handover; in summer, booking early makes sense. For your goods, we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB); for valuable items, additional insurance is possible. More places can be found under Locations.

Packing Service

For road and ferry, we pack crockery and electronics securely and label the boxes by room in Ajaccio with our packing service.

Office Move

If your company is opening an office on Corsica, we plan the office move to Ajaccio with the ferry date and reassembly over several days.

Senior Move

If you are retiring to the Mediterranean, we plan in breaks and reassemble the furniture in Ajaccio on arrival day – with a move for seniors.

Furniture Transport

Wardrobes and chests of drawers travel padded and secured against slipping; we clarify narrow lanes in Ajaccio in advance with furniture transport.
FERRY & FORMALITIES

Six points for a move to Corsica

Ajaccio lies on the west coast of Corsica, around 390 km by sea from Marseille. For the move, the ferry date, a parking space in the city and a few formalities in France are what count.

01

Plan the ferry early

Ferries connect Ajaccio daily with Marseille, Toulon and Nice; we book the space for the removal van to match your date.
02

Apply for a parking space

To park in public space, you submit an application to the city; since 2024 it has been handled by the Service Voirie.
03

No registration obligation

In France, EU citizens have no general registration obligation as in Germany and no obligation to hold a residence card – there is no registration at the town hall (mairie).
04

No customs

France is part of the EU: there is no customs clearance for your household goods, but spot checks are possible – keep your ID and inventory list to hand.
05

Health insurance

Anyone working in France is insured through the Assurance Maladie; clarify the switch early with your German health insurer.
06

Deregistering in Berlin

When moving abroad, you deregister in Berlin – at the earliest one week before and at the latest two weeks after moving out (§ 17 BMG).
FOR SMALL LOADS

Move affordably with a part load

Share the cargo space, cut the costs

For smaller amounts, a shared load to Ajaccio can be cheaper: your household goods travel with other consignments heading to southern France and cross by ferry. Whether this works depends on other consignments on the route; delivery takes place within a time window according to the timetable.

Everything
for your move

Everything around your move

A move to an island needs more lead time than an ordinary long-distance move, mainly because of the ferry crossing for the removal van. Formally, some things are simpler than in Germany: EU citizens have no general registration obligation in France, so there is no registration at the Mairie d'Ajaccio. Your car, on the other hand, must be re-registered with a French number plate. Health insurance, the flat search and the date also matter – in summer, roads and ferries are busier. What applies to papers and deadlines is covered in the guide Emigrating to France.

Planning safe and relaxed

Coordinate the ferry date, flat handover and deregistration in Berlin: this keeps your private move, move for seniors or student move to Ajaccio predictable, even with a crossing.

Furniture, boxes, transport routes

With a packing service, well-secured furniture transport and a small transport for remaining items, everything arrives safely over road and sea; we clarify narrow access routes in Ajaccio in advance.

Costs, timing and special cases

Besides volume and route, the ferry, tolls and a second driver count. Whether an office move, company move, shared load or furniture taxi: for Ajaccio we give the fixed price after a survey, with the ferry as a separate item.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to Ajaccio

Costs, ferry, duration, neighbourhoods, formalities and season – answered briefly.
The cost of a move to Ajaccio depends on volume, floor, access and extra services. On top of that come the route to the ferry port – around 1,540 km to Marseille – tolls, a second driver or overnight stops, and the crossing, which the shipping company charges by loading metre. After a free survey, you receive a fixed price in which the ferry is a separate item.

Ajaccio's neighbourhoods: where you can live

The municipality divides Ajaccio into around ten neighbourhoods. The Centre-ville, with the citadel, Place Foch and Cours Napoléon, is the tourist heart with shopping streets; to the north lies Octroi-Sainte Lucie with the port and railway station. Saint-Jean lies close to the historic core and is characterised by residential blocks, while Pietralba and Les Salines in the north-east are modest residential areas; urban renewal is under way in Les Salines and Cannes-Binda.

On the heights to the south lies the upmarket Casone neighbourhood, and towards the Route des Sanguinaires the Résidence des Îles in a quiet location. In the north, Mezzavia offers housing estates, commercial areas and the Ange-Casanova stadium; Vazzio in the north-east lies by the airport. Since 2025, the Angelo cable car has linked Saint-Joseph and Mezzavia.

Housing, work and everyday life in Ajaccio

Housing is scarce in Ajaccio: according to Wikipedia, there has long been a lack of space for new homes, which has brought newcomers to the surrounding municipalities; around 85% of homes date from after 1949. Current rents can be found on French property portals. As the capital of Corsica and seat of the Corse-du-Sud prefecture, Ajaccio is an administrative centre; there is also the port, Ajaccio Napoléon Bonaparte Airport – home of Air Corsica and the island's busiest airport – as well as trade and tourism.

There is no university in Ajaccio: the Università di Corsica is based in Corte, and locally there are mainly BTS vocational programmes and a nursing school. By train you can reach Corte, Bastia and Calvi, and in the city the Muvistrada bus network operates. The quality of life is shaped by the gulf, beaches and mountains in the hinterland – and by its history as Napoleon's birthplace.

A fair price for your move

Fair and transparent prices matter to us. That is why our offers for a 1-room flat start at just €349. For 2 rooms the price is €599, for 3 rooms €909 and for 4 rooms €1,329. Return trip and further routes

Ajaccio: ferry transport from Marseille and customs on the route

A move from Berlin to Ajaccio goes overland to a French mainland port and from there by sea ferry to Corsica. On its website, La Méridionale lists the Marseille–Ajaccio route and states that its ships call at Ajaccio daily. Corsica Linea lists Marseille and Ajaccio among the ports where it operates freight agencies.

What the shipping company publishes on freight is important for planning:

  • According to Corsica Linea, transport is possible with or without an accompanying driver.
  • Charges are based on loading metres, at least 6 metres, regardless of season and direction.
  • Oversized loads require a separate quote based on dimensions and weight.
  • Quotes are requested via the “Demande de cotation” form.

We take the duration of the crossing from the timetable of the booked connection and let you know before the loading date. The ferry costs are included as a separate item in your quote, which we prepare after the survey.

France is part of the EU. According to zoll.de, there is no customs clearance when travelling within the EU, but random customs checks are possible. Keep your ID and an inventory list ready. Read more about the paperwork in our guide to customs and formalities when moving to France. The overall planning is explained on our page about the long-distance move.

Ajaccio: parking space for the removal van, parking zones and waste service

A removal van in the centre needs a parking permit. According to the City of Ajaccio, since 1 January 2024 the Service Voirie has handled applications for the use of public space for parking during works or moves. The “Permission de stationnement” form is available for download on ajaccio.corsica, and the department's phone number is +33 4 95 25 95 64. We submit the application together with you.

The city describes the regular parking provision in the centre as follows: 2,041 paid surface parking spaces, divided into three zones.

  • Orange zone: 113 spaces on the Cours Napoléon, €1.00 per hour, maximum 3 hours, Monday to Saturday.
  • Blue zone: 1,248 spaces, €0.50 per hour, maximum 5 hours, Monday to Saturday.
  • Long-stay zone: 680 spaces in six car parks, €0.50 per hour, maximum 8 hours, Monday to Friday, free on Saturdays.

According to the city, the Parking du Diamant under Place Charles de Gaulle is open around the clock. Residents of paid zones receive a 60 per cent discount after registering, according to the city; the parking department (Direction Stationnement) can be reached on 04 95 51 52 55.

Waste and disposal before moving in are handled by the CAPA urban community; the information number is 0800 42 42 40. We answer questions on ferry logistics in the guide to long-distance moves to France.

Always one step ahead.
