Arriving in Haarlem
Haarlem: Capital of North Holland on the Spaarne
– the first few weeks
Haarlem is the capital of the province of North Holland and, according to CBS, had 168,946 inhabitants on 1 January 2026. The city lies on the Spaarne – hence its nickname Spaarnestad – on the north-western edge of the Randstad; Amsterdam is 19 km away, Schiphol Airport 13 km and the North Sea coast about 7 km. In 1839 the first train in the Netherlands ran between Haarlem and Amsterdam. The old town is shaped by the Grote Markt with St Bavo's Church, the hofjes (almshouse courtyards) from the 17th and 18th centuries and, with the Teylers Museum of 1778, the country's oldest museum.
For newcomers from Germany, registration comes first: according to the Gemeente Haarlem (municipality), anyone staying longer than four months registers in the population register (BRP) at the Publiekshal at Zijlvest 39 within five days; the BSN then follows by letter. Because the Netherlands is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. For social rented housing in Haarlem you need a huisvestingsvergunning (housing permit). We do not give specific rents because we have no reliable, up-to-date source. We handle the transport from Berlin as a home removal.
