Poznań: living between Stary Rynek Jeżyce and Rataje

Living in Poznań
Poznań: a fresh start in the capital of Greater Poland
Districts, work, registration
A move to Poznań takes you to one of Poland's largest cities: around 538,000 residents, capital of the Greater Poland Voivodeship and roughly halfway between Berlin and Warsaw. From Berlin-Moabit it is 278 road kilometres via the A12 and the Polish A2 – a lorry can often cover the route including loading and unloading in one day. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle your long-distance move from packing to furniture assembly in the new flat.
We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and we discuss additional insurance for valuable items in advance. Whether you are moving to the Old Town, to Jeżyce or to a housing estate such as Rataje – we clarify access and carrying distance before the date. On our private move page you can find full details of our services. You can see further routes under Long-distance moves.

Distance, tolls and access in the quote
For your move to Poznań we factor in the volume, floors, carrying distance and the 278 km route in advance, as well as the lorry toll in Poland. If your new flat is on Stary Rynek, we clarify vehicle access beforehand. After the survey you receive a fixed price that does not change for the same scope.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we plan your move to Poznań
Often in one day
At 278 km, Poznań is a short international move for us: for a flat we can often manage loading in Berlin, the drive via the A12 and A2 and unloading in one day. During the survey we clarify the floor, lift and parking space at both addresses – in the Old Town a barrier system controls access to Stary Rynek. You handle registration in Poznań yourself; we tell you which documents you need. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB, and we quote the price as a fixed price after a survey.

What
to settle before moving to Poznań
Before moving to Poznań, three things should be settled: a district that suits your workplace and tram line, access at the new address and registration. Zameldowanie must take place within 30 days of arrival; the city hall only serves people with an appointment, which you book online or via POZnan Kontakt. In Germany you deregister within two weeks of moving out. We are happy to advise you on packing lists, interim storage and the right date.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Poznań
Stary Rynek, Jeżyce, Rataje: the districts of Poznań
Since 2011 Poznań has been divided into 42 osiedla; in everyday life people often still refer to the former districts of Stare Miasto, Jeżyce, Grunwald, Wilda and Nowe Miasto. Around Stary Rynek (Old Market Square) with its colourful merchants' houses and the billy goats on the town hall, you live right in the middle of things – but access with the removal van is regulated there. Jeżyce, west of the centre, is characterised by late 19th-century buildings, cafés and a market; Łazarz in the Grunwald district lies around Wilson Park.
In the north, large housing estates dominate, such as Winogrady and Piątkowo; east of the Warta lies Rataje with many housing blocks. Wilda borders the centre to the south. For our private move service, the exact location plays an important role in planning access and carrying distance.
Employers, universities and the housing market in Poznań
The largest industrial employer is the Volkswagen Poznań plant with over 11,000 employees (2018); MAN Truck & Bus also builds city buses here. The universities include Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań University of Technology and the Medical University. Actual rents vary greatly by district and year of construction – compare current offers on Polish portals and factor in service charges and the deposit.
For leisure there is Jezioro Maltańskie (Lake Malta) with its regatta course, which hosted the 2009 World Rowing Championships, and the park on the Citadel. The A2 connects Poznań with the German border and with Warsaw. For a specific cost calculation for your move, we recommend our overview of long-distance moves.

Poznań: access to the Old Market Square with the removal van
If you are moving to Poznań's Old Town, you should clarify access to the Old Market Square (Stary Rynek) early. According to its announcement of 21 March 2024, the municipal road authority Zarząd Dróg Miejskich (ZDM) has introduced a permanent traffic arrangement there: car access to the square is controlled by a barrier system.
- According to ZDM, authorised vehicles enter the square via ul. Wielka and leave it via ul. Wodna.
- There is an emergency access for rescue vehicles at the corner of ul. Rynkowa/ul. Zamkowa.
- Municipal service and delivery vehicles may only enter on certain days and at certain times. The announcement does not give the specific times.
- No access to the square is provided from other side streets.
This information comes from an announcement from 2024. Before your moving date, therefore, ask ZDM Poznań whether an entry permit (warunki wjazdu) is needed for your address and for which vehicle sizes it applies. For flats on the Rynek, plan for additional carrying distances in case the van cannot get right up to the front door.
In Poland, the electronic e-TOLL system applies to heavy vehicles on toll road sections; the sections are managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA). You can find out which vehicles are affected on etoll.gov.pl. General advice on organisation can be found in our article on long-distance moves to Poland.
Registering after your move to Poznań: zameldowanie at the Urząd Miasta
After arrival you must register in Poland. On its information portal (BIP), Poznań City Hall gives the following key facts for zameldowanie:
- Deadline: 30 days, counted from arrival at the new place of residence.
- Costs: Registration is free. Only the certificate of temporary registration costs 17 złoty in stamp duty.
- Documents: the completed registration form, signed by the owner or another authorised person, an identity card or passport and proof of your right to live there, for example a land register extract, notarial deed or tenancy agreement.
- Appointment: Only people with a booked appointment are served. You can book online or by phone via POZnan Kontakt, telephone 61 646 33 44.
- Locations: ul. Karola Libelta 16/20 and ul. 28 Czerwca 1956 r. 404, both on the ground floor.
Alternatively, you can register online via gov.pl if you have a trusted profile (profil zaufany) or a qualified electronic signature. Online applications also require the digitally signed proof of your right to live there and the owner's declaration.
Please also note the German side: anyone moving abroad without taking up a new flat in Germany must deregister at the registration office within two weeks of moving out under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG). We cover customs and paperwork in more detail in the article Moving to Poland: customs, formalities and process.
