Moving to Nice: Costs Process & Districts

Nice guide
Nice: between the old town, Cimiez and the harbour
Neighbourhoods, everyday life, formalities
A move to Nice marks the start of a new chapter of life in the south of France. In the old town, Vieux Nice, there are pedestrian zones for which you apply to the city for access in advance; elsewhere the removal van needs a parking permit from the Ville de Nice (city of Nice). We are based in Berlin and plan the route of around 1,340 km with a stopover so that your household goods arrive safely. You can find our private move service under Private move.
Nice is the fifth-largest city in France, so housing is in correspondingly high demand. That is why we plan your long-distance move with plenty of lead time and a fixed delivery date. Whether you are moving to Cimiez or to the centre – we take care of furniture assembly and packing fragile items. No customs declaration is needed within the EU. More about moves abroad can be found under international move.

What we clarify before the move to Nice
Parking space, access, journey time
For a move to Nice, preparation on site is what counts: the Ville de Nice issues a permit for the removal van's parking space, and applications must be made at least five working days in advance; for pedestrian zones, seven working days apply. We plan these deadlines with you. The route from Berlin is long, so we arrange a change of drivers or an overnight stop. Your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³). Further destinations can be found under Locations.

Nice
for newcomers
When moving to Nice, you should think about your flat search early, as housing in the city is in demand. In the narrow old town, smaller vehicles are often needed for the last few metres. Official websites are mostly in French – basic knowledge helps. If you commute, look for proximity to the three tram lines or to the Aéroport Nice Côte d'Azur.

Frequently asked questions about living in Nice
Districts of Nice: where is it worth living?
The old town, Vieux Nice, with its narrow lanes and cafés, is rather impractical for families with a car, as many streets are pedestrian zones. Quieter and greener is Cimiez on the hill north of the centre, known for the Musée Matisse – the painter lived here until his death in 1954. West of the centre are residential neighbourhoods such as Fabron and Magnan, both on the tram line.
Around the market in Libération, life is everyday and lively. In the east, in Riquier and at the harbour, Le Port, many younger professionals live, and the tram links the harbour, the centre and the airport. Which neighbourhood suits you depends on your commute, budget and the size of the flat.
Rents, job market & quality of life in Nice
Housing in Nice is in demand, especially near the sea. We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here; compare offers on French portals and expect to provide a deposit and proof of income. Important employers in the region are based in the Sophia Antipolis technology park around 20 km west of the city; added to these are tourism, the university hospital and the Université Côte d'Azur, as well as the EDHEC Business School.
The city lies between the sea and the mountains, and the public transport network with three tram lines and buses connects the neighbourhoods. Nice Côte d'Azur airport is the third-largest in France and offers many connections to Germany – handy for visits to your old home.

Moving to Nice: applying to the Ville de Nice for a parking space on moving day
If you want to load furniture in Nice, you need space right outside the front door. The city of Nice (Ville de Nice) issues an "autorisation de stationnement temporaire" (temporary parking permit) on public land for this. According to nice.fr, private individuals and companies can apply. The responsible office is the Direction du Stationnement payant sur voirie. The application is made using a standard form ("Demande de stationnement – Déménagement"), which you submit by email.
The city states the lead time in working days ("jours ouvrés"), depending on where the removal van is to stand:
- 5 working days if the van stands in a permitted parking space (free, paid, delivery zone or "arrêt minute").
- 7 working days if it is to stand on the carriageway, on the pavement or in a place where parking is not permitted, or if your flat is in a pedestrian zone.
In the 7-working-day cases, a road inspector ("contrôleur de voirie") comes on site and determines the conditions under which use of the public space is permitted. The page does not state a fee for this permit; it refers generally to the city's tariffs.
So plan the application straight after fixing the date. During the survey we clarify the carrying route, floor and lift with you so that you can give the office precise details. More on the subject can be found under Parking restriction zone and international move.
Nice: pedestrian zone, vehicle documents and settling into the city
If your new address is in a pedestrian zone ("aire piétonne"), for example in the historic centre, additional rules apply. According to the Ville de Nice, parking is prohibited there; only a short stop for loading and unloading is allowed. For access you need a separate permit via the online form "Accès temporaire à l'aire piétonne", at least 7 working days in advance. Here too, a road inspector checks the individual case. Once approved, you ring the intercom on the access post (totem); the security control centre ("PC Sécurité") then lowers the retractable bollards. Which zones are affected is shown in the city's "Guide des aires piétonnes".
After moving in, two things are useful:
- Vehicle documents: according to nice.fr, you must update the address on the registration document ("carte grise") within one month of the move.
- Welcome service: the city offers newcomers the "Nouveaux Niçois" service with practical tips, excursions and a reception. According to the city, a free drop-in session without an appointment takes place on Monday mornings at Nice + Facile (6 rue Tonduti de l'Escarène); current dates are on nice.fr.
According to nice.fr, the city is divided into areas such as "Nice Historique", "Cœur de Nice" and "Rives du Paillon". Give us the exact address when you enquire so that we can plan access and the vehicle's position. How a move over this distance works is explained under Long-distance move.
