Ostrava: living and working in Czechia's third-largest city
Districts, university, everyday life
With around 283,000 inhabitants, Ostrava is the third-largest city in Czechia and lies only about ten kilometres south-west of the Polish border. The former coal and steel city has changed its face: in the Vítkovice industrial area, where the last blast furnaces went out in 1998, concerts and the Colours of Ostrava festival now take place. With the Technical University (formerly VŠB) and the Ostravská univerzita, the city is also a university location. If you are planning a move to Ostrava, you will find an overview of districts and formalities here; on request our private move service handles the transport.
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and carry out moves to Czechia as long-distance moves. It is around 570 km by road to Ostrava, via Wrocław or via Prague depending on traffic. There are no customs formalities for household goods within the EU; what matters is access, floor and carrying route at the new address – for example in the dense streets of Moravská Ostrava or in the large housing estates of Poruba. We give you the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered under the HGB. The locations overview shows which other destinations we serve.

Moving to Ostrava: fixed price after a survey
Route, toll and carrying route calculated in advance
For your move to Ostrava we calculate the route, the lorry toll in Czechia, loading and unloading and packing materials in advance. This is based on a survey or video survey of your Berlin flat and details of the district, floor and lift at the destination. You then receive a fixed price that does not change on moving day as long as the scope stays the same.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we bring your household goods to Ostrava
One team from the Spree to the Oder
For us, a move to Ostrava is a long-distance move to another EU country: we carry out the survey in Berlin, plan the route and the parking spot at the destination and drive with the same team all the way to the new flat. You are responsible for registering locally yourself – but we point out the registration with the foreign police and the vehicle questions so that nothing is left undone. Our liability for your belongings is governed by the HGB; we discuss additional insurance for valuable items in advance. We schedule dates around your flat handover in Berlin and the start of your tenancy in Ostrava.

What
to clarify before moving to Ostrava
Before moving to Ostrava, three things should be settled: registration with the Czech police's foreigners' department, health insurance and – if you are taking a car – registering it in Czechia. When looking for a flat, it is worth considering the district, as Ostrava is divided into 23 districts with their own offices. Measure large furniture in advance if you are moving into a period building with a narrow stairwell. We are happy to advise you on packing lists, interim storage and the right date.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Ostrava
Moravská Ostrava, Poruba, Vítkovice: the districts at a glance
Moravská Ostrava a Přívoz is the centre, with shops, offices and Stodolní ulice – one of the largest nightlife areas in Czechia, with dozens of clubs and bars in a small space. If you move in there, you live right in the middle of things but should expect noise at weekends. Poruba in the west is a separate district with large housing estates and the Technical University campus; many students and university staff live here.
Vítkovice is closely linked to the former ironworks, whose industrial area is now used for concerts, exhibitions and the Colours of Ostrava festival. Other large residential districts are Ostrava-Jih with Zábřeh and Hrabůvka, and Slezská Ostrava east of the Ostravice. Which district suits you depends mainly on where you work and the tram connections.
Flat hunting, universities and workplaces in Ostrava
Ostrava is considered cheaper than Prague or Brno; however, actual rents vary greatly by district and the condition of the building. So compare current listings on Czech property portals and have the tenancy agreement explained to you before signing if you do not speak Czech. Flats in large estates are often offered by institutional landlords, while period flats in the centre are more often let privately.
The Technical University of Ostrava (formerly VŠB) goes back to a mining academy founded in 1849 and has around 15,000 students; the Ostravská univerzita was founded in 1991 and has a medical faculty with a university hospital. Industry still shapes the city today, for example the Nová huť steelworks on the outskirts. When choosing a flat, check your commute – Ostrava is spread out, and some districts are far apart.

Moving to Ostrava from Germany: border formalities and registration
According to zoll.de, Czechia is an EU member state. The rules on duty-free removal goods described by German customs apply to moves from non-EU countries into the EU. For a move from Berlin to Ostrava, these forms are therefore not the benchmark. You can obtain binding information on your individual case, for example regarding a vehicle, from customs.
On registration, the EU portal Your Europe says: during the first three months, EU citizens cannot be required to hold a residence certificate, but some countries require you to report your presence on arrival. After three months, registration with the competent authority may be necessary. For this you need a valid identity card or passport and, depending on your situation, proof such as an employer's confirmation, proof of self-employment or, for students, enrolment and health insurance.
According to Your Europe, the registration certificate should be issued immediately, and the fee may not be higher than what nationals pay for identity documents. Anyone who does not register risks a fine, but may not be expelled for that reason alone. Clarify with the Czech authorities before the move which authority is responsible in Ostrava and which deadline applies there.
How we organise long-distance moves is explained on the long-distance move page. For the particularities of moving abroad, read international moves.
Ostrava: planning the journey to the right one of 23 city districts
According to ostrava.cz, the city of Ostrava is divided into 23 city districts (městské obvody): Hošťálkovice, Hrabová, Krásné Pole, Lhotka, Mariánské Hory a Hulváky, Martinov, Michálkovice, Moravská Ostrava a Přívoz, Nová Bělá, Nová Ves, Ostrava-Jih, Petřkovice, Plesná, Polanka nad Odrou, Poruba, Proskovice, Pustkovec, Radvanice a Bartovice, Slezská Ostrava, Stará Bělá, Svinov, Třebovice and Vítkovice.
Accordingly, Poruba and Moravská Ostrava a Přívoz are separate districts. This matters for your move, because the address, responsibilities and access differ. So when you enquire, always give us the street, house number and district of your new address, as well as the floor, whether there is a lift and how close the lorry can get to the entrance.
This lets us check during the survey or by video how the carrying route runs, how many belongings there are and whether a furniture lift makes sense. The journey starts from our depot in Berlin-Moabit; we set the route and duration in the quote, not in advance as a flat rate. Without this information, a reliable price statement is not possible, because floor, lift and carrying route largely determine the effort.
