Guide to Charleroi
Moving to Charleroi: the Sambre, Ville Haute and Bois du Cazier
at a glance
Charleroi lies on both banks of the Sambre in the province of Hainaut, about 50 km south of Brussels, and with around 204,000 residents it is the third-largest municipality in Belgium and the largest in Wallonia. The city was formed from several former municipalities such as Marcinelle, Gosselies, Jumet and Gilly. In 1956 the Bois du Cazier mine in Marcinelle was the scene of the worst mining disaster in Belgian history. If you are planning a move to Charleroi, you are moving to a French-speaking city with its own airport.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 774 km via Aachen and Liège to Charleroi; that takes about 12 hours including breaks – so we use two drivers or an overnight stop. As both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Charleroi or from Charleroi back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route and paperwork are covered in the Charleroi long-distance moving guide.

How your move to Charleroi works with us
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Wallonia
We have no branch in Charleroi; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in the Ville Haute, a flat in Marcinelle or a house in Gosselies. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address, following the City of Charleroi's rules. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with your address registration.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Charleroi
The most attractive districts of Charleroi at a glance
The Ville Haute (upper town) and the Ville Basse (lower town) on the Sambre form the centre, with the Rive Gauche shopping centre, cafés and tram connections. Marcinelle in the south has green residential streets; this is where the former Bois du Cazier mine, now a memorial, is located. Gosselies in the north is close to Brussels South Charleroi Airport and the technology park, while Jumet and Gilly are residential areas with many terraced houses.
Further sub-municipalities are Montignies-sur-Sambre, Lodelinsart, Couillet, Dampremy, Marchienne-au-Pont and Mont-sur-Marchienne. Which location suits you depends on your commute, budget and type of home. Our private moving service plans access, floor and carrying distances for each of these areas in advance; we take narrow streets in the Ville Haute and missing lifts into account during the survey.
Housing market, work and cost of living in Charleroi
Compared with Brussels, living in Charleroi is considered cheaper; we do not quote specific rents because they depend heavily on location and condition. This makes the city attractive for students, young professionals and families moving away from the capital region. Public transport by tram and bus is run by TEC.
The economy of the former coal and steel city has diversified: facilities of the Université libre de Bruxelles and a technology park in Gosselies have been added, and Brussels South Charleroi Airport is a popular destination for low-cost airlines. Brussels is around 50 km to the north and can be reached by rail and motorway.
Culture such as Charleroi Danse and museums on industrial history contribute to the quality of life, as does the location on the Sambre. If you are coming from Berlin, brush up your French: authorities, landlords and tradespeople in Wallonia speak mainly French. For the move itself, we plan access, parking zones and carrying distances during the survey.

How your moving price is composed

Removal lorries in Charleroi: pedestrian zones and parking zones
In the centre of Charleroi, the traffic rules decide on access. According to the City of Charleroi, there are pedestrian zones in rue de Dampremy and place Verte, on place du Manège and place Vauban and on boulevard Roullier, among others. Some zones are protected by retractable bollards. According to the city, the bollards lower automatically every day between 4 and 10 in the morning. Residents and shops receive a pass and badge. Anyone else can request the lowering between 4.00 and 10.00 from the police on 071/210 318.
For special cases such as moves, the city refers to the "Études-mobilité" service of the Charleroi police (071/210 620), where access to the pedestrian zone can be requested. The city does not mention reserving parking spaces for moves on its traffic page. How we plan stopping outside the building is explained under parking restriction zone.
For parking in the city centre, Charleroi distinguishes by zone:
- Zone rouge (red): maximum 2 hours, 1 hour free,
- Zone verte (green): maximum 8 hours, 1 hour free,
- Zone turquoise: 180 minutes free, without a ticket,
- according to the city, parking is free daily from 17.00 to 9.00 and all day on Sundays.
How transport from Berlin works is explained in the Charleroi long-distance moving guide.
Maisons citoyennes, bulky waste and everyday life in Charleroi
Around moving in, residents of Charleroi take care of their change of address and waste. According to the City of Charleroi, you can go to any "Maison citoyenne" (citizens' office), regardless of where you live. According to the city, the standard opening hours are daily from 8.00 to 11.30 and from 13.00 to 16.00 (new hours since 5 October 2026), with Saturday mornings only in Marcinelle. All locations are closed on Thursday afternoons. The population department is responsible for "change of residence" (telephone 071 86 00 00). Online applications are also possible.
According to the city, bulky waste ("encombrants") is collected from your home free of charge. You book an appointment on 071/47.57.57 (Monday to Friday, 8.00 to 12.00 and 12.30 to 16.00); the collection is organised within 14 days. Anything the collection does not take, such as tyres, garden waste or hazardous household waste, goes to the Recyparc run by Tibi.
If you arrive in your own car, according to the city you can use 700 free spaces in car parks P1 and P2 of the Palais des Expositions, a few minutes' walk from place du Manège and place Vauban. According to the city, the resident's card (carte riverain) is valid for 12 months and is not renewed automatically.
So book the bulky waste collection in good time before your moving date and let us know in advance which furniture is not coming with you. More on everyday life there is offered by Living in Charleroi.
