As Austria is a member of the European Union, there are no customs formalities for private household goods when moving from Germany. Your own inventory list is still sensible, for example for insurance. For your residence: under the Registration Act (Meldegesetz), you register in Austria within three days of moving in, in St. Pölten at the registration office on Rathausplatz. If you stay longer than three months, you apply for the registration certificate within four months of entry. Our team points out these steps to you during planning.

St. Pölten: road use and parking restrictions at the traffic office
The city's traffic office (Verkehrsamt) is responsible for applications to use public roads in St. Pölten (Linzer Straße 8, 1st floor, 3100 St. Pölten, telephone +43 2742 333-2141, [email protected]). There the city describes the road traffic permit under § 82 StVO for using roads for purposes other than traffic; the form "Ansuchen um straßenpolizeiliche Bewilligung nach § 82 StVO" (application for a road traffic permit under § 82 StVO) can also be submitted electronically. The required attachments depend on the individual case.
Whether a parking restriction zone for your move falls under this procedure the city does not explicitly say on this page. Nor does it state the deadline or fee there. So ask the traffic office which documents, deadlines and costs apply, and allow sufficient lead time for this.
- Opening hours according to the city: Monday to Thursday 08.00 to 11.30 (afternoons by appointment only), Friday 08.00 to 12.00.
- A residents' parking permit is a separate matter and does not replace a parking restriction for the lorry.
We coordinate the loading window and approach with the destination address and, if necessary, apply for the permit together with you. How we secure the loading zone can be read under Parking restriction zone. The moving guide for St. Pölten describes the districts of St. Pölten and their residential areas.
St. Pölten: registration confirmation, town hall appointment and flat handover
After arriving in St. Pölten, it is a matter of registering your new residence with the city. On the city's citizen service pages you will find information on registering and deregistering, on the registration confirmation (Meldebestätigung) and on online appointment booking at the town hall. Use the appointment booking to avoid waiting times, and check the current opening hours of the town hall on the city's website.
On the deadline: under the Registration Act, registration within three days of moving into the accommodation applies throughout Austria; so plan the appointment in St. Pölten for the first few days after moving in. The Meldezettel needs the signature of the accommodation provider, i.e. the landlord.
For logistics at the destination, three points are important:
- Handover date: agree with the landlord from when the flat will be cleared and swept clean. If the date is not fixed, your removal goods can be stored temporarily, see Storage.
- Access: clarify before loading day where the lorry may stop and whether the traffic office requires a permit.
- Papers: important documents, keys and valuables always travel with you in the car, not in the lorry.
