St. Pölten for newcomers: Lower Austria's capital on the Traisen 25 minutes by train from Vienna

Newcomer's Guide to St. Pölten
St. Pölten: Lower Austria's largest city on the Traisen
The first few weeks
St. Pölten has been the state capital since 1986 and is also the largest city in Lower Austria; among Austria's cities it ranks ninth by population. The statutory city in the Alpine foothills on the Traisen combines a baroque old town around Domplatz and Rathausplatz with the modern government quarter, home to the Landhaus, the Festspielhaus, the Museum of Lower Austria and the Klangturm. For newcomers from Germany, the move is a change within the EU, with no customs papers.
According to Wikipedia, the train journey to Vienna takes 25 minutes; the West Autobahn A1 and the Kremser Schnellstraße S33 also cross here. If you are new, you register within three days with the registration form (Meldezettel) at the town hall. We handle the move from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) as a home removal; the route and journey time are described on our page Moving from Berlin to St. Pölten.
