Avoiding trip hazards: setting up the new flat safely in old age

Senior move part 12
Living safely in old age from the very first day
Light, walkways, grab rails
A move is the best opportunity to make your home safer. When unpacking, every piece of furniture is put in a new place anyway – so it hardly takes any extra effort to keep walkways clear, bundle cables and not even roll out loose rugs in the first place. Our removal helpers assemble beds, wardrobes and shelves and put them where you can reach them safely in everyday life. Via our private move you can book packing, transport and assembly. That way life in the new flat begins without trip hazards.
Before moving day, discuss with relatives where the bed, armchair and dining table should go: the route from the bed to the bathroom is the most important one at night. On request we fix tall wardrobes and shelves to the wall so that they cannot tip over, and set the bed at a height that makes getting up easier. A tradesperson comes to fit grab rails in the bathroom – as a tenant you can ask your landlord for permission to do this (§ 554 BGB).

A move with safe furniture assembly
Fixed price after a survey, assembly according to plan
During the free survey we sketch out with you where each piece of furniture should go in the new flat. You then receive a fixed price for transport, assembly and wall fixing. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Call us without obligation on 01625978461 and arrange an appointment.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we set up the new flat
Clear walkways, secure furniture
When assembling, we think about everyday life afterwards: walkways stay clear, cables disappear behind furniture, heavy things go into the bottom of the cupboards. On request we fix tall furniture to the wall. Our team takes its time until everything is set up in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. We give you the fixed price after the survey. We are based in Berlin and drive nationwide – destinations with their own page can be found under Locations.

Planning
furniture, lighting and walkways
Part 12 of our series begins where the lorry is empty: with setting up. We show how, when moving in old age, you can position furniture, plan lighting and route cables so that falls become less likely. Grab rails, bed height and home adaptation advice are also covered. If you are moving to another city, you will find suitable solutions with our long-distance moves – assembly at the destination is included on request, so that the first night is a safe one.

Questions about setting up safely
Finding trip hazards before the furniture is in place
Walk through the empty flat once with everyday life in mind: where is the route from the bed to the bathroom, where are there thresholds, where is light missing? Note where the sockets are – that is where lamps should go, so that no cables lie across the floor.
Check whether the flat is suitable in principle before you sign; there is a checklist for this in part 5 on the accessible flat.
Lighting, grab rails and secure furniture
Night lights or lights with motion sensors in the hallway, a switch right by the bed and grab rails at the shower and toilet make everyday life safer. As a tenant you can request permission for such alterations (§ 554 BGB). The long-term care insurance fund can provide a subsidy if you have a care grade (§ 40 (4) SGB XI).
On request we fix tall furniture to the wall.
Guide prices for your move
Our guide prices to give you a first idea: 1-room flats from €359, 2-room flats from €599, 3-room flats from €909 and 4-room flats from €1,324. Larger properties such as houses or villas receive an individual quote. We charge long-distance moves transparently from €3.95/km. Take advantage of our free survey for a binding quote.
Understanding moving prices: what assembly and distance add
The final price is made up of volume, distance (from €3.95/km), floor and lift. An organised no-parking zone is also a cost item. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a part load round off the offer.
