Double rent usually arises from differing notice and move-in periods. While the statutory notice period of just under three months usually applies to the old flat (notice by the third working day of a month, effective at the end of the month after next, § 573c BGB), the new landlord often wants you to move in immediately or at short notice. This mismatch in timing means tenants have to pay for both flats at the same time.
This problem is particularly common in big cities with a tight housing market, as new flats are often let quickly. If you do not check the deadlines in time, you can easily end up with a double financial burden. Agreeing things early with both landlords can save a decisive amount of money here.
