Cost traps

Hidden moving costs: the items behind the bait price

Look closely

Unsere Firma Spotting extra costs when moving: no-parking zone, carrying distance, floor, material, disposal, tolls and waiting time.

Many quotes look cheap because they leave out items that are still incurred on moving day: the no-parking zone, a long carrying distance from the courtyard, the fifth floor without a lift, boxes and film, or the disposal of old furniture. You can spot such hidden moving costs by comparing quotes line by line. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen you receive a fixed price after the survey, in which the floor, distance and amount of furniture are already taken into account.

Before every quote we look at your move, on site or by video, to assess all cost factors realistically. What is and is not included in the fixed price is stated in writing in the quote – ask specifically about the no-parking zone, material and disposal. Private customers can find details under Private move. We are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB; €620 per m³), and additional insurance is possible on request.

HONESTLY CALCULATED

How we avoid extra costs

Survey first, then fix the price

We rely on honest calculation instead of surcharges after the fact: during the survey we record the volume, floors, lift, carrying distance and parking situation and write into the quote what is included. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and know the procedures for no-parking zones at the Berlin district offices. Destinations outside Berlin are listed under Locations.

Packing service

Whether boxes, film and packing work are included in the price is stated in our quote – so packing material does not become an item that only appears on moving day.

No-parking zone

Without a zone in front of the door, the carrying distance becomes longer and more expensive. On request we apply for it at the district office – and state the costs openly in the quote.

Disposal

It is best to mention old furniture that should not come along at the survey; then we include the clearance in the calculation straight away.

Furniture transport

A piano, safe or corner cupboard belongs on the list in advance – heavy single items are a typical reason for additional charges in furniture transport.
CLEAR PRICES

What makes a clean quote

Our work is based on transparency, reliability and fair pricing. Every customer should be able to rely on the written quote – from the first conversation to the last box.

01

Site survey

Anyone who does not carry out a survey is only estimating. Only after a look at the cellar, stairwell and courtyard can a fixed price be given without later surcharges.
02

Every item named

Staff, vehicle, packing material, assembly, no-parking zone and disposal are listed individually in the quote – ask about anything missing before you sign.
03

Fixed price, not an estimate

A cost estimate may be exceeded; a fixed price may not. Look for the words “fixed price” in the quote rather than “approx.” or “expected”.
04

State access honestly

Floors, lift, walking distance from the lorry and parking situation determine the effort. If these details are correct, the price stays stable on moving day.
05

Clarify changes beforehand

If something is added after the quote, such as an extra cellar room, we discuss the additional effort before the move – not only at the lorry.
06

Use the tax relief

You can deduct 20% of the labour costs of a privately initiated move as a household-related service, up to a maximum of €4,000 a year.
SMALL LOADS

Part load: cheap, with a time window

Little volume, shared journey

A part load can save considerable costs with a small moving volume. But clarify before booking whether carrying into the flat, the floor and possible waiting times within the time window are included in the price – otherwise extra items lurk here too.

UNDERSTANDING COSTS

Where
extra costs arise

From the floor to the toll

Whether a small room move or a long-distance move right across Germany – every moving project has its own cost risks: no-parking zones, floors without a lift, a furniture lift, packing material and, over long distances, tolls and overnight accommodation for the team. How to draw up your budget in full is explained in the article Calculating your moving budget. That way you are prepared for possible extra costs with every type of move.

Before the quote

An inventory list, photos of the cellar and stairwell, a note on heavy single items: the more precise the details, the fewer additional charges for a private move, senior move or student move.

On moving day

Waiting for keys, a blocked lift, extra boxes: with an agreed packing service, planned furniture transport and small transport, such items remain the exception.

Long distances and businesses

Lorries from 3.5 t pay tolls on motorways and federal roads. For an office move, company relocation, public-authority move, part load or furniture taxi, they should be in the quote, like overnight accommodation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on hidden moving costs

Answers on bait offers, no-parking zones, floors, material, tolls, storage and fixed prices.
Hidden moving costs are charges that are not clearly shown in the quote but are still billed on moving day – such as floor surcharges, a long carrying distance, parking fees or packing material. A written fixed price after a survey, listing all agreed services, largely prevents such surprises.

The most common hidden cost traps when moving

Classic hidden moving costs include missing no-parking zones, which can lead to expensive detours or fines. An unplanned floor surcharge when there is no lift also often drives the price up unexpectedly. Further cost traps arise from extra packing material, which many providers only charge separately on moving day.

Interim storage, disposal of old furniture, a furniture lift, lorry tolls on long-distance moves or transport insurance taken out afterwards are also often hidden in the small print. Anyone who does not clarify these points in advance risks a considerably higher bill in the end than originally calculated. A detailed fixed-price quote takes all these factors into account from the outset.

How to recognise reputable fixed-price quotes

A reputable quote lists all services individually and leaves no room for later interpretation. Look for written details on the number of staff, vehicle size, liability and additional insurance. The difference between a fixed price and a cost estimate is important: a cost estimate is an estimate; if it is substantially exceeded, the company must notify you without delay and you may terminate the contract (§ 649 BGB). On a long-distance move, the kilometre rate and lorry tolls should already be included.

Reputable companies offer a free survey instead of giving a rough estimate on the phone. In addition, a moving company must inform consumers on conclusion of the contract about its liability and the option of additional insurance (§ 451g HGB). Ask specifically about possible extra costs and have them confirmed in writing.

Our guide prices for comparison

Every move is different, but our guide prices give you an orientation: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €615, 3-room flat from €899, 4-room flat from €1,299. For a house or villa you receive an individual quote; for long-distance moves we charge from €4.15/km. We give you the binding fixed price after a free survey.

These factors set the price

The level of moving costs depends on distance (from €4.15/km), volume and local conditions such as the floor or lift. A required no-parking zone increases the effort further. Further services such as furniture assembly or a part load can be calculated separately.

Services that belong in the quote

If you need these services, you should find each of them listed individually in the quote.

  • House clearance: reliable clearance of properties of all kinds. House clearance
  • Private move: moves that take the weight off your shoulders. Private move
  • Furniture transport: fast and safe when only one piece of furniture needs to travel. Furniture transport
  • Company relocation: your company moves, we take care of it. Company relocation
  • Move with assembly: a comfortable move with a full assembly service. Move with assembly
  • Part load: share the transport and save hard cash. Part load

Cost clarity over long distances too

With a nationwide move, tolls, driving times and sometimes an overnight stay are added – they belong in the quote. We are based in Berlin and drive nationwide; destinations can be found in the overview of destinations, longer routes under Long-distance moves.
