Postponing or cancelling your moving date: what applies when work calls

Guide for working people · Part 14
Work changes the plan – how to adapt your move
Changing dates safely
A client meeting that gets moved, a business trip or an earlier start in a new job – for working people, the moving date is at risk more often than they would like. If you factor this in from the start, things are easier when it happens: before booking, read what the quote says about postponement and cancellation, and name a possible alternative date straight away. Our private move is planned bindingly after the survey.
If something changes, get in touch immediately – the earlier you do, the more likely it is that a new day can be found. Landlords, your employer and any no-parking zone (Halteverbotszone) you have applied for also depend on the date. We give you the fixed price after the survey; whether it stays the same if the move is postponed, we clarify case by case. You can find more about our services under private move.

Request a date – with an alternative day in mind
By phone Mon–Fri 9 am–5 pm
Call us Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm on 01625978461. We arrange a survey and prepare a fixed-price quote. Mention straight away if your date is uncertain because of your job – then we will talk about a possible alternative day.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Clear arrangements, even when things change
Talk early instead of cancelling at short notice
Working people need a date they can rely on – and a plan B if work gets in the way. After the survey we set the moving date bindingly and give you the fixed price. If something changes on your side, let us know as early as possible, and we will find a new day together. Your belongings are covered under the HGB. We have one location in Berlin-Moabit; destinations with their own page can be found under our locations.

Plan
B for moving day
The final part of our series Moving for working people is about changes: what happens if work upsets the moving date? We explain what the German Commercial Code says about terminating a moving contract, why an alternative date helps right from booking and who needs to be informed apart from the moving company – from the landlords to the authority that approved the no-parking zone. For moves to other cities, read more under long-distance moves.

Frequently asked questions on changing and cancelling the date
Before booking: quote and alternative day
Whether a move can be postponed free of charge is stated in the quote or the terms and conditions – read this part before you accept. If your work situation is uncertain, for example because of a project phase or a probation period in a new job, say so at the survey. Then an alternative day can be factored in.
Also plan a buffer with your landlord and employer: a key handover a day or two after moving day and a day of leave that can be moved if necessary take the pressure off. What to look out for when comparing quotes is explained in the article Comparing quotes.
Postponing or cancelling: what the law says
A moving contract is a contract of carriage within the meaning of the German Commercial Code. Under § 415 HGB you can terminate it at any time. The company can then demand the agreed remuneration minus saved costs, or a flat third of it (dead freight, Fautfracht) – unless the reason lies within its own sphere of risk. You should know beforehand what the contract expressly says about postponement or cancellation.
A new date is almost always cheaper than a cancellation. So get in touch immediately if work gets in the way, and also inform your landlord, employer and the authority if a no-parking zone has been applied for.
Prices fixed in advance
With us you know exactly what to expect in advance: 1-room flats from €375, 2-room flats from €584, 3-room flats from €899 and 4-room flats from €1,324. Larger properties such as houses or villas receive an individual quote. We charge long-distance moves transparently from €4.20/km. Take advantage of our free survey for a binding quote.
What influences the price
Volume and distance (from €4.20/km) form the basis of every price calculation. On top of that come structural factors such as the floor and lift, as well as a no-parking zone if one is needed. Furniture assembly and a part load can also affect the total price.
