Getting to know Versailles: quartiers parking and formalities

Versailles for newcomers
Life in the royal town: Versailles at a glance
Arriving on the doorstep of Paris
A move to Versailles takes you to a town of around 83,000 inhabitants shaped by the château and its gardens. The town centre is divided into historic quartiers such as Notre-Dame with its market and Saint-Louis around the cathedral; many buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries, with narrow stairwells and little space in front of the door. For a private move we therefore clarify the floor, access and an approved parking space before the lorry sets off.
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and also drive to France; the route to Versailles is around 1,070 km long and usually a two-day journey for a removal lorry. Your household goods are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. More on long routes can be found under long-distance moves. We give you the fixed price after the survey – enquiries on 01625978461.

What we clarify before you move into Versailles
Stairwell, permit, time window
We have no office in France – we are based in Berlin and therefore plan the move to Versailles especially thoroughly in advance: floor and lift, width of the stairwell, stopping place and the town's permit for public space. Your household goods are covered by liability under the HGB, and we give you the price after the survey. Further destinations with their own page can be found under locations.

Only a few pieces of furniture for Versailles?
For individual pieces of furniture or a small flat we offer a part load: your belongings share the load space with other consignments heading to France. This lowers the costs; in return the delivery day in Versailles is somewhat more flexible.

Home,
school, address
After the move to Versailles, the formalities differ from those in Germany: there is no registration office, and you notify your health insurance fund, the Caf (family allowance office) and the tax office of your new address via Service-Public. You register children for state primary school at the mairie (town hall). You can reach Paris via the RER C and the Transilien lines. Our private move service helps with packing, transport and assembly.

Questions about living in and moving to Versailles
Versailles's districts at a glance
The two historic quartiers lie in the centre: Notre-Dame north of the Avenue de Paris, with the Marché Notre-Dame and many shops, and Saint-Louis to the south, around Saint-Louis Cathedral, with quieter streets. Around Versailles-Chantiers station lies the Chantiers quartier, where the RER C, Transilien and regional trains stop – practical for commuters.
Further out come Montreuil in the east, Porchefontaine in the south-east with its own station, Clagny-Glatigny in the north, Jussieu in the north-west and Satory on the plateau to the south, where the military is traditionally stationed. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and budget – the buildings range from town mansions to apartment blocks.
House hunting, education and everyday life in Versailles
Versailles is part of the Greater Paris area, and demand for housing is correspondingly high. We do not give specific rents or purchase prices here because they vary greatly depending on the quartier and building; compare current listings and allow enough time for your search. Many landlords require a dossier with proof of income and often a guarantor (garant).
The town is the seat of the prefecture of the Yvelines département and of the Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ). For everyday life, the château gardens, the market in Notre-Dame and the rail links to Paris via three stations also count: Versailles-Château-Rive-Gauche (RER C), Versailles-Chantiers and Versailles-Rive-Droite.

For a relaxed long-distance move we plan every stage from Berlin, including to the Paris region. More on this under long-distance moves; which destinations have their own page is shown in the locations overview.
A parking space for your move in Versailles: occupation du domaine public
In Versailles, a permit is required for any use of public space. According to the town, it is temporary, revocable and personal and must be displayed so that it is visible from the street. The Urbanisme (planning) department processes the applications, and according to the town the reservation of parking spaces is managed by the Service de la voirie (highways department). For permits related to works, the town requires the application at least 1 month before the start.
The page does not mention removal lorries. So ask in good time whether a permit and a reserved parking space are required for your move. You send the form "Demande d'occupation du Domaine Public" by email or post to the Urbanisme department (4 avenue de Paris, [email protected], tel. 01 30 97 82 05; Mon to Fri 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm). The fee is set annually by the town council. According to the town, parking questions are handled via the demarches.versailles.fr portal.
Illegal parking is expensive: the forfait post-stationnement (post-parking charge) in Versailles is €40, or €28 if paid within five calendar days. According to the town, anyone who stays longer than 15 minutes at the "15-minute bornes" (short-stay bays) in shopping areas pays €35 and risks being towed. In total, the town counts around 20,000 on-street parking spaces.
How we organise moving day is shown on the page about the parking restriction zone.
Crit'Air, bulky waste and formalities: Versailles after moving in
The French Ministry of the Environment currently lists 25 low-emission zones (Zones à faibles émissions, ZFE), including Paris and Toulouse; the page does not name Versailles (as of 13 August 2025). In a ZFE, the Crit'Air sticker is essential. If your route takes you into a ZFE, check in advance what applies to your vehicle.
According to the town, you put bulky waste (encombrants) outside your door the evening before, without obstructing the passage; 2 m³ per household is permitted. Collection days by quartier: Notre-Dame and Ermitage on Mondays, Saint-Louis and Satory on Tuesdays, Porchefontaine and Montreuil on Thursdays, Clagny-Glatigny and Bernard de Jussieu on Fridays. The déchèteries (recycling centres) in Bois d'Arcy, Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt and Buc can be reached on 01 39 66 30 00. If you park a vehicle permanently at the roadside, according to the town there are residents' subscriptions for €291 a year or €34.20 a month (2025 rate); in addition there are 7 car parks with almost 3,200 spaces in total.
In France you notify several bodies of your address in one step via Service-Public, including your health insurance fund, the Caf, the tax office and the vehicle registration office; the service is free of charge. Which formalities apply when arriving from Germany can be found in Moving to France: customs formalities and process and in the article Long-distance move to France.
