From Berlin to North Bohemia
Moving to Liberec: Reichenberg between the Ještěd and the Jizera Mountains
Guide
Liberec, Reichenberg in German, is the fifth-largest city in the Czech Republic with more than 107,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the Liberec Region. The city lies not far from the border triangle with Poland and Germany in the Liberec basin, between the Jizera Mountains to the north-east and the Ještěd ridge to the south-west; the Lusatian Neisse flows through the city. Its local mountain is the 1,012 m high Ještěd with its transmitter tower. As the Czech Republic is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. With our home move we handle packing, transport and assembly.
Whether studying at the Technical University of Liberec (TUL), a new job or moving to be with family: we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 325 km via Dresden, the A4 and Zittau to Liberec. By lorry that takes about four and a half hours, so a normal move can often be done in one day. In the Czech Republic, a vehicle up to 3.5 t needs an electronic vignette on motorways, while heavier vehicles use the electronic toll – we clarify this before departure. We give you the fixed price after a survey. More under International move.

What we handle on a move to Liberec
Planning in Berlin, arrival beneath the Ještěd
A move to Liberec crosses a national border but does not leave the EU: there is no customs duty on your household goods; the main things to consider are the vignette or toll, access at the destination and the Czech registration requirements. We have no branch in the Czech Republic; instead we drive by lorry from Berlin-Moabit right to your door. We clarify access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether an older building in the city centre or a prefabricated block in Rochlice. For your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible. We give you the fixed price after the survey, whether you are moving to the city centre or to Vratislavice.

From
planning to assembly
Several questions play a role in a move to Liberec: which district suits you, which road charges apply to the removal van in the Czech Republic and how registration as an EU citizen works. Anyone coming from Germany should also think about their vehicle, health insurance and bank account. We do not give rents because they change quickly. You will find places with their own pages under Locations; we calculate the route from Stromstraße 21.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Liberec
Liberec: city centre, residential areas and districts
The centre of Liberec lies around the town hall square with the historic town hall; around the city centre there are many older buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, often with high ceilings and no lift. North of the centre lies Lidové sady with the zoo, founded in 1919 as the first zoological garden in what was then Czechoslovakia, and the botanical garden. Larger housing estates of prefabricated blocks can be found in Rochlice, for example; Vratislavice nad Nisou in the south-east is a separate district on the Neisse. For the move, hillside location, stairwell and access matter most: many streets climb, and older buildings often have narrow stairs. Which area suits you depends on your commute, school and budget; we plan the transport to suit the address.
Studying, working and leisure in Liberec
We do not give specific rents because they change quickly and depend heavily on location and condition; compare current offers on Czech portals and calculate in koruna. The Technical University of Liberec brings students to the city, and the region is shaped by industry. Leisure options include the Ještěd with its transmitter tower, hiking trails and ski area, the Jizera Mountains and the zoo. Dresden and Zittau on the German side are easy to reach. Only sign the tenancy agreement once the moving date can be planned. It is best to plan giving notice in Berlin, deregistering at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) and the Czech registration steps backwards from moving-in day; if the flat is not yet free, we store your furniture temporarily in Berlin. If the scope does not change, the price stays exactly as stated in the quote.
Moving prices – how we calculate fairly
Fair and transparent: for a 4-room flat you pay from €1,344, for 3 rooms from €884, for 2 rooms from €579 and for 1 room from as little as €359. For houses and villas we always prepare an individual quote, as requirements vary greatly here. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.20 per kilometre. It is best to clarify all the details during a free survey.
Moving costs at a glance
Volume and distance (from €4.20/km) form the basis of every price calculation. Added to this are structural factors such as floor and lift, as well as a parking restriction zone if needed. Furniture assembly and part load can also affect the total price.

More routes from Berlin

Long-distance move to Liberec: motorway vignette, toll and planning from Berlin
A move to Liberec is a long-distance move abroad. We start from our base in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); it is around 325 km to Liberec, about four and a half hours by lorry. For the removal vehicle, road charges play a role in the Czech Republic. According to the official eDálnice website, all four-wheeled vehicles up to 3.5 t must purchase an electronic vignette. It is bought online in the eDálnice shop; the price depends on whether the vehicle has an environmentally friendly type of drive.
On the website you can also check, using the number plate and country of registration, whether a vehicle has a valid vignette or an exemption. According to this website, a separate electronic toll system applies to vehicles over 3.5 t, to which the website refers (myto.gov.cz). Which option applies to your move depends on the vehicle used. We clarify this with you before departure.
- Determine the volume and the vehicle needed during the survey
- Coordinate the loading and unloading date with access in Liberec
- Clarify packing and furniture assembly in advance
We ask about the rules the city of Liberec sets for stopping in the centre for your specific address when we take on the job; do not rely on general statements. Read more about our services abroad under international move and long-distance move.
Liberec: registering your residence as an EU citizen and stairwells in older buildings
As an EU citizen, according to the EU's Your Europe portal you may stay in the Czech Republic for up to three months with a valid ID card or passport, without any formalities. After three months there may be an obligation to register; according to this website, the responsible office is usually the municipal office (městský úřad) or the local police station. You then receive a registration certificate (osvědčení o registraci).
The website lists the following as evidence:
- a valid ID card or passport
- proof of comprehensive health insurance
- proof of sufficient means without claiming social assistance
After five years of continuous lawful residence, you are entitled to permanent residence (trvalý pobyt). The details and the exact procedure in Liberec may change, so clarify them in advance with the responsible office and take the evidence listed in the original and as a copy.
In practice, you can often expect narrow stairwells in older buildings. Measure doors, stairs and the lift before you buy or dismantle furniture. Wardrobes, beds and shelves can usually be transported in parts if assembly is prepared. On request we handle furniture assembly and packing, and we check the carrying distances during the survey. Read more about the process in the article Long-distance move to the Czech Republic.
