Moving to Arnhem: Costs Process & Districts

Arnhem guide
Moving to Arnhem: districts north and south of the Rhine
Districts, costs, parking
Arnhem is the capital of the province of Gelderland and has around 172,000 inhabitants. The city lies on the Nederrijn: north of the river are the centre, older districts such as Klarendal and the Spijkerkwartier and Sonsbeek park, and south of it Arnhem-Zuid with Malburgen, Elderveld, De Laar and the new development of Schuytgraaf. If you are planning a move to Arnhem, you are also choosing between older buildings on narrow streets and new builds with more space. Its role as capital and the river shape the city.
From Berlin-Moabit it is around 619 km via the A2, A3 and A12; no customs duties apply within the EU. We come from Berlin, have no branch in the Netherlands and take care of packing, transport and assembly. Because large vehicles may not park in most places in Arnhem, we clarify the vehicle and stopping point in advance. For your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. The route is described in the overview of long-distance moves.

All
about moving in to Arnhem
In Arnhem it pays to look at the parking rules early. Besides the transport, a move to Arnhem raises practical questions: is there a waiting list for the parking permit in your district? What is involved in registering at the town hall? And what waste charge will you have to pay? The municipality's rules are set out below; the route, driving time and parking ban for large vehicles are described in the article Long-distance move to Arnhem.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Arnhem
Arnhem's districts at a glance
When planning in Arnhem, the side of the river matters first: north of the Nederrijn are the centre and older districts, south of it Arnhem-Zuid. Klarendal lies between the Spijkerkwartier and St. Marten; at the lower end of the Klarendalseweg the Modekwartier (fashion quarter) with studios and shops was created in 2008. The neighbouring Spijkerkwartier is a district of older buildings close to the centre. North of the centre lies Sonsbeek park; older buildings here often mean narrow stairs and little space for the lorry.
South of the Nederrijn lies Arnhem-Zuid with Malburgen, Elderveld, De Laar, Kronenburg with its shopping centre and the new development of Schuytgraaf; Arnhem Zuid station lies between Elderveld, De Laar and Schuytgraaf. Bridges across the river include the John Frost Bridge and the Nelson Mandela Bridge.
Living, studying and leisure in Arnhem
The housing market in Arnhem is in demand; we do not quote specific rents because they change quickly. More important for the move: in most districts there is a waiting list for the residents' parking permit, and registration at the town hall requires proof of residence. Clarify both before you fix the moving date. According to the municipality, the Stadhuis at Koningsstraat 38 is open on Mondays from 12 noon to 8 pm and from Tuesday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm; registration is free and completed within four weeks, after which you receive your BSN in writing.
Arnhem is home to the HAN university of applied sciences and the ArtEZ art school. Leisure options include Sonsbeek park, the Nederlands Openluchtmuseum (open-air museum) and Burgers' Zoo; to the north the forests of the Veluwe begin. Arnhem: parking permits and parking sectors at your new home
If you are moving to Arnhem, clarify the parking question before moving day. According to the Gemeente Arnhem page on sdg.government.nl, the Dutch government's services portal, the residents' permit is offered as an annual permit for €149 (1 March to 1 March) or as a six-month permit for €88; the six-month version is only available at the desk of Parkservice P1. You apply online at the digital parking desk (arnhem.parkeer.nl). For your own car, the municipality checks the number plate with the RDW; for a leased car, you upload the driver certificate and lease agreement.
The permit is tied to a parking sector determined by your address. In most districts there is a waiting list because spaces are scarce; even if you are eligible, a permit may not be issued straight away. Areas mentioned include Binnenstad, Stationsgebied, Transvaalbuurt, Spijkerkwartier, Spoorhoek, Sint Marten, Burgemeesterskwartier, Heijenoord and Nieuwe Kadekwartier. As a rule there is one permit per self-contained home, two in some districts.
The page says nothing about visitor or removal vehicles; ask the municipality on +31 26 377 46 81. Important: according to the municipality, reporting your move late can also affect your parking permit. For the German side of the topic: Parking restriction zone.
Arnhem: registration, reporting a move and the waste charge
According to the Arnhem page on sdg.government.nl, anyone moving in from abroad and staying for at least four months registers within 5 days of arrival. You book the appointment online, and all family members, including babies, come along. You need a valid ID, proof of residence such as a tenancy agreement or deed of purchase and, where applicable, foreign certificates. Registration is free; it is completed within four weeks, after which you receive your BSN in writing. The Stadhuis (Koningsstraat 38, 6811 DG Arnhem) is open on Mondays from 12:00 to 20:00 and from Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00.
If you are already registered in the Netherlands, you can report the move from four weeks before to five days afterwards. The municipality processes it within five working days. Options are the online portal, an appointment via afspraak.arnhem.nl or a form by post to Postbus 9029, 6800 EL Arnhem.
You should know about the waste charge in advance. According to the municipality, it is €312.72 per year for a single-person household, €400.80 for two people and €440.52 for three or more; on a low income the fixed charge is waived on application.
