Long-Distance Move Berlin – Arnhem: Route Registration, Duration

Berlin – Arnhem
Long-distance move to Arnhem: 619 km to the Nederrijn
Route, parking, registration
Unlike most destinations in the Netherlands, the lorry does not reach Arnhem via the A30 but via the Ruhr area: from Berlin it travels around 470 km on the A2 to Oberhausen, then on the A3 past Emmerich to the border and on the Dutch A12 to the Nederrijn. Altogether that is around 619 km, roughly 9 hours by lorry including a break. No customs duties apply to a move to the Netherlands. You can find all routes under long-distance moves.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and take care of packing, transport, dismantling and assembling furniture. Important in Arnhem: according to the municipality, vehicles over 6 metres in length or 2.4 metres in height may not park in most places, and a zero-emission zone for vans and lorries applies in the city centre. We clarify both before the moving date. We quote the fixed price after a survey; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

What we take on for your move to Arnhem
Lorry from Berlin, municipality (gemeente) by you
Our lorry drives directly from Berlin-Moabit; we have no location of our own in the Netherlands. We take care of packing, carrying, transport and assembly. You handle registration with the municipality (gemeente), the BSN, health insurance and the car yourself – we tell you the deadlines that run from the day you arrive. Because large vehicles are barely allowed to park in Arnhem, we plan the vehicle size and stopping point with you in advance. Our liability under § 451e HGB applies to your household goods at €620 per cubic metre; you can add additional insurance.

From
the Ruhr area to the municipality

Arnhem: first registration with the municipality
If you are moving to the Netherlands for the first time and plan to stay for at least four months, you register with the municipality, according to the Gemeente Arnhem, within five days of arrival. You book an appointment for this; students from abroad can also arrange one for their first registration in Arnhem. If you were previously listed in the Dutch population register, the city states the same five-day deadline with attendance in person and an appointment.
According to the municipality, bring the following to the appointment:
- a valid ID or residence permit as well as a valid travel document or other proof of nationality,
- originals of foreign certificates such as marriage or birth certificates that meet the requirements for legalisation and translation,
- proof of your new address, such as a tenancy agreement or proof of ownership,
- your partner and your children if they are moving with you.
According to the municipality, your entry is completed within four weeks of registering. You receive written confirmation including your citizen service number (BSN) and can then check your details via mijnoverheid.nl. For people from outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, the immigration service IND must first give its approval. For moves within the Netherlands, the city gives a window from four weeks before to five days after the move, online or at the desk. For stays of less than four months, the city refers to a separate section. You can find the overall process in the Arnhem moving guide.
Arnhem: zero-emission zone and large vehicles in the city centre
New rules have applied in Arnhem's city centre since 1 June 2026: according to the Gemeente, there is a zero-emission zone for vans and lorries and an environmental zone for diesel cars and diesel buses, both in the same area. It covers the Singels, the Nieuwe Plein, the Hoge Rijnkade and the area within them; Airborneplein and Lage Kade lie outside. From 1 January 2027, vans of emission class 5 will no longer be allowed in. You can check whether a vehicle may enter with the city's Kentekencheck (number plate check); you apply to the municipality for exemptions.
Important for removal vans: according to the Gemeente, parking large vehicles – longer than 6 metres or higher than 2.4 metres, in each case including the load – is prohibited in most places in Arnhem. An exemption is only granted in very exceptional cases and not for business reasons. The application goes via the contact form, the decision comes within eight weeks, and processing costs €84.85, which is also charged if the application is refused. Parking large vehicles is permitted, among other places, on the industrial estates IJsseloord I, ’t Broek, De Kleefsche Waard and De Overmaat. The page does not say whether the city treats removal vans separately; ask on 0800-1809.
How we plan the route is explained under Long-distance move; everyday life after moving in is described in Living in Arnhem.
