Destination: Brussels
Moving to Brussels: 19 municipalities, European Quarter and Grand-Place
explained in brief
The Brussels-Capital Region is a continuous urban area with around 1.2 million residents and consists of 19 municipalities, comparable to city districts – each with its own population register. Brussels is the main seat of the European Union and home to NATO, and the official languages are French and Dutch. The Grand-Place and the Atomium are its best-known landmarks. If you are planning a move to Brussels, you must register with the municipality of your new home and reserve the parking space for the lorry there.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 756 km via the Rhineland and Leuven to Brussels; that takes about 11.5 hours including breaks – so we use two drivers or an overnight stop. As both countries are in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Brussels or from Brussels back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. The route and paperwork are covered in the Brussels long-distance moving guide.

Our part of your move to Brussels
Planned in Berlin, arriving in the capital region
We have no branch in Brussels; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in Saint-Gilles, a flat in Ixelles or a house in Uccle. We apply in good time for the permit to stop outside the new address, following the City of Brussels' rules. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with your address registration at your municipality.

Moving
service without compromise
A move to Brussels raises many questions: which of the 19 municipalities suits you, how do you reserve the parking space for the removal van, when must the new address be registered and what applies in the Low Emission Zone? This guide introduces municipalities such as Ixelles, Saint-Gilles, Uccle, Schaerbeek and the European Quarter, explains parking reservation, registration and public transport, and describes the roughly 756 km drive from Berlin via the Rhineland and Leuven. Costs and shared loads are covered too. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Brussels
Brussels districts at a glance: where is it good to live?
Ixelles/Elsene is a popular area with cafés, the ULB university and many young professionals; the Avenue Louise divides the municipality. If you prefer somewhere quieter, Uccle/Ukkel offers green residential streets and family houses. The international European Quarter around Schuman attracts many EU employees and offers a short commute.
Schaerbeek and Anderlecht are multicultural. Saint-Gilles/Sint-Gillis combines Art Nouveau architecture with a lively bar scene. For families, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre and Auderghem are also worth considering. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on the municipality, location and condition. For the move, what counts above all is the parking reservation, the floor and the often narrow stairs of the townhouses.
Job market, universities and quality of life in Brussels
As the main seat of the European Union and home to NATO, Brussels attracts many international professionals working in institutions, associations, diplomacy or NGOs; there are also the permanent secretariat of the Benelux countries and EUROCONTROL. For students, the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) are the leading addresses.
Quality of life benefits from long-distance trains to Paris, London and Amsterdam and a dense public transport network of metro, tram and bus run by STIB/MIVB. In culinary terms the city scores with waffles, chips and its beer culture, and culturally with the Grand-Place and numerous museums. Multilingualism – French, Dutch and often English – makes it easier for international newcomers to get started; dealings with the authorities are possible in French or Dutch.
Your moving costs at a glance
Moving costs do not have to be complicated. Our prices: 1-room flat from €344, 2-room flat from €589, 3-room flat from €894, 4-room flat from €1,324. For a house or villa there is an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €4.20/km. We are happy to clarify everything else during a free survey.
What you should know about moving costs
The price depends primarily on the volume and the distance (from €4.20/km). But the floor and lift as well as a necessary parking restriction zone also have an effect. If you need additional furniture assembly or a shared load, please say so in advance.

Parking space in Brussels and Ixelles/Elsene: OSIRIS, municipality and signs
In the Brussels Region, reserving a space for the removal van takes two steps. First you need a permit to use public space via the regional platform OSIRIS. Then you apply to the municipality for the reservation. In Ixelles/Elsene, according to the municipality, you send the form to the OTVP service or apply online via Irisbox, at least seven working days before the date.
- The municipality puts up the signs at least 48 hours before the start.
- The fee must be paid at least five working days before the start, otherwise no signs are put up.
- Reservations over 30 metres require a written application to the mayor, at least 30 calendar days in advance.
- A reservation is not possible in a restricted-access zone (ZAL).
For 2025 the municipality gives €93.40 per day for a length of 12 metres and €116.77 for 20 metres; the amounts are adjusted annually, so please ask the OTVP for the current rates. In the City of Brussels the signs are rented from the city, with at least ten working days' notice, only on working days between 7:00 and 19:00 and not in pedestrian zones. More on the process can be found in the Brussels long-distance moving guide and under parking restriction zone.
Access in Brussels: Low Emission Zone and registration in Ixelles/Elsene
According to lez.brussels, the entire Brussels Region is a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) that applies around the clock in all 19 municipalities. It covers cars, vans and buses with Belgian or foreign registration. Diesel vehicles, including lorries, must meet at least Euro 6, petrol vehicles at least Euro 3. According to the site, a day pass costs €35, and an offence can lead to a fine of €350. According to the site, up to 24 day passes per year are possible per vehicle. That is why we check the access requirements for the vehicle used before the move.
After moving in, you register. According to the municipality of Ixelles, a change of address within Belgium must be reported to the population office (Services de la Population) or online no later than eight days after the move; the service is free of charge. If you need to reserve a parking space, you may submit the application up to 15 days before the move. Bring the ID cards of all household members. For moves from abroad, the municipality describes different steps, which you will find on its page about living in Ixelles.
