Moving to Białystok: Costs Process & Districts

From Berlin to Białystok
766 km to Podlaskie: moving to Białystok
Route, registration, neighbourhoods
A move to Białystok is a long journey: from Berlin-Moabit we take the A12 to the border at Frankfurt (Oder), the Polish A2 towards Warsaw and the S8 expressway north-east to the capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship. That is around 766 road kilometres – about 12 hours by lorry including statutory breaks, and therefore more than one day's driving time. We therefore plan two drivers or an overnight stop and calculate your fixed price after a survey. We reach your new flat in Bojary, Piaski or the Centrum on the second day.
Whether you are a single person, a family or a student at the University of Białystok – we tailor our private move to your household. Details can be found under Private move. There are no customs between Germany and Poland, and your household goods cross the border without paperwork; in Poland the lorry is subject to the e-TOLL road toll. Other routes from Berlin are listed under Long-distance moves.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Białystok
The districts of Białystok at a glance
Białystok is divided into numerous osiedla (districts). The Centrum offers shops, restaurants and the Branicki Palace, while Bojary is one of the oldest neighbourhoods and is known for its wooden houses. Piaski and Wysoki Stoczek are dominated by apartment blocks and have good bus connections, which is practical for commuters.
Dojlidy in the south-east lies by the Dojlidy ponds, in green surroundings on the edge of the city. Antoniuk, Starosielce and Zielone Wzgórza are further residential areas with new builds. For the move, the exact address matters: we clarify floor, lift and access with you in advance. If the lorry needs space on the street, the city says the Zarząd Dróg Miejskich (municipal roads authority) is responsible – we sort this out in good time before the moving day.
Living, working and studying in Białystok
With around 290,000 residents, Białystok is the largest city in north-eastern Poland. Current Polish property portals show how high rents in your preferred neighbourhood are at present; we do not give fixed averages here. New-build flats are in demand as well as older buildings in the centre; because of the universities, demand is particularly high at the start of the semester. So plan your search well ahead.
If you are moving to Białystok for work, you will find jobs in administration, healthcare, retail, industry and IT. Three universities shape the city: the University of Białystok, the University of Technology (Politechnika Białostocka) and the Medical University. Work out your commute and school before deciding on a neighbourhood; we then plan the moving date accordingly.
This is what your move really costs
Small flats stay affordable: for a 1-room flat you pay from €375, for a 2-room flat from €609. Larger households cost correspondingly more – a 3-room flat from €889, a 4-room flat from €1,329. For houses and villas there is an individual quote, and if you are moving further away, long-distance moves cost from €4.25/km. Get no-obligation advice during a free survey.
What you should know about moving costs
The price depends primarily on volume and distance (from €4.25/km). But the floor, lift and any necessary parking restriction zone also have an effect. If you need additional furniture assembly or a shared load, please let us know in advance.

Białystok: street space for the removal lorry and the Zarząd Dróg Miejskich
If you want to park a removal van on the street in Białystok, you deal with the city's roads authority, the Zarząd Dróg Miejskich. According to the city's Biuletyn Informacji Publicznej (public information bulletin), the department for the use of road space (Referat Zajęcia Pasa Drogowego) is responsible; it is located at ul. Składowa 11, 15-399 Białystok, telephone 85 869 6724. This is where you apply for a permit to use a strip of road (zezwolenie na zajęcie pasa drogowego). The procedure may require documents such as a site plan at a scale of 1:1000 or 1:500 and, if traffic is affected, a traffic management plan.
According to the page, the authority decides within up to 30 days of receiving the complete application; in complicated cases it can take up to two months. The fee is based on a city council resolution (No. XXI/341/20). The page does not explicitly say whether briefly parking a removal lorry falls under this procedure; the department will confirm this by phone.
- Choose your date so that the processing time of up to 30 days is allowed for
- Prepare a site plan showing the space required
- Before applying, ask the department whether a removal vehicle falls under the procedure
More information on the route can be found in Long-distance move to Poland: process and tips and under International move.
Driving to Białystok: EU internal border, tolls for heavy vehicles and planning
Like Germany, Poland is a member of the EU. The Federal Ministry of Finance explains with regard to the customs union that no customs duties are levied at internal borders. The German customs procedure for duty-free removal goods using form 0350, by contrast, applies to moves from non-EU countries. Excise duty rules apply to alcohol and tobacco; if in doubt, ask customs.
Poland has an electronic toll system for heavy vehicles, e-TOLL. According to the official portal, users register via an online customer account (IKK) or at a customer service point, activate a tracking device and choose a payment method. The portal also mentions the European toll service EETS. Exactly which vehicles are affected is set out there; we check this for our removal lorry before departure.
- Vehicle data and tolls are part of the route planning
- Gather driver papers and freight documents
- Agree the loading and unloading date with you
An overview of papers and deadlines can be found in the guide Moving to Poland: customs, formalities and process. For costs and planning, read Moving to Poland: costs and planning and Furniture transport to Poland.
