Moving plants

Green stays green: plants safely through a summer move

Transport them gently

Unsere Firma Moving houseplants in summer: water correctly, wrap them loosely, let them wait in the shade and unload them quickly.

Houseplants are the most delicate cargo in a summer move. A heated-up cargo space or a car in the sun can scorch leaves within a short time and dry out root balls. On top of that, shoots get snapped when large plants are squeezed between boxes. If you follow a few rules, you can still get your monstera, ficus and cacti there in good shape. The order matters most: plants are loaded last and unloaded first at the new home.

For our private move we clarify during the survey which plants travel in the removal van and which are better off in your car. Large tubs need a fixed spot and padding, small pots travel in open boxes. We quote the fixed price after the survey. Call us on 01625978461 if you have many plants or particularly large ones.

WITH CARE

How we handle plants during a move

Last in, first out

With us, plants get a fixed spot at the end of the load, so that they do not stand in the vehicle for hours or end up under boxes. Large tubs are secured, and long shoots are tied together beforehand. At the new home we unload the plants first and put them in a shady spot. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), work at a fixed price after a survey and handle moves nationwide – destinations in the locations overview.

Packing service

With a packing service small pots are stowed in open boxes and held in place with paper, and large plants are wrapped in packing paper rather than film.

Office plants

Large tub plants often come along on an office move too. We include them in the loading list so that they do not get wedged between filing cabinets.

Senior moves

Favourite plants are often a piece of home. For a senior move we put them straight into a suitable, bright spot in the new flat.

Securing tubs

Heavy tubs are secured with straps and padded so that they do not tip over on bends or lose any soil – part of our furniture transport.
PLANT CHECKLIST

Six steps for moving plants

From watering to settling in: with these six steps your plants arrive healthy in the new flat even on hot days – whether small herb pots or the large indoor palm.

01

Water correctly

Water one to two days before the move, not on the morning of the move. Wet soil is heavy, drips onto boxes and can go mouldy in a warm vehicle.
02

Do not repot

Do not repot shortly before the move – that means additional stress. If you want lighter pots, do it a few weeks beforehand.
03

Wrap loosely

Packing paper or an old sheet protects leaves from sun and snapping. Film traps heat and moisture and is not a good choice in summer.
04

Load last

Plants wait in the shade and go into the vehicle last. That way they spend as little time as possible in the heated cargo space.
05

Never leave them in the car

A parked car heats up a lot in the sun very quickly. Never leave plants in it, not even for a short break.
06

Settle them in gently

Put plants in a bright spot at first, but not in blazing sun. Some species shed leaves after a change of location – this usually settles down.
SMALL LOADS

Part load: better to take plants yourself

Share load space, cut costs

With a part load (Beiladung) you share the cargo space with other customers and save costs. Because the tour has several stops, your belongings are usually on the road longer than with a dedicated trip. In summer it is therefore better to take delicate houseplants with you in your own car.

SUMMER MOVE

All
about plants and moving

From the windowsill to your new home

Plants need planning during a move, just like a delicate piece of furniture. Decide in advance which plants are coming along and which you will give away to neighbours or friends. For large specimens, weight and height count: does the palm fit through the stairwell, the door and into the vehicle? For a long-distance move, delicate plants are best transported in an air-conditioned car rather than standing in the cargo space for hours. You will find many more tips that apply in any season in the article Moving plants.

What comes along

A list of all plants, their size and their place in the new flat helps with packing. That way your private move, senior move or student move stays clearly organised – and no plant gets left behind on the windowsill.

Wrapping and carrying

With a packing service, careful furniture transport for heavy tubs and a small removal for individual large specimens, your plants arrive without snapped shoots or spilled soil.

Offices and special cases

For an office move or company relocation, tub plants belong on the loading list; with a part load or furniture taxi, plants are better off travelling in your own car in summer because of several stops, instead of waiting a long time in the cargo space.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on plants during a summer move

Answers on watering, wrapping, transport, large tubs and settling in during the heat.
The early morning hours between 6 and 10 am are best for a summer move, as temperatures are still pleasantly cool then. The midday heat should be avoided for heavy carrying to prevent circulation problems among the movers. We plan our jobs accordingly and start especially early if needed, so that the most strenuous part of the move is done before the sun is at its highest.

Preparing plants: watering, tying, wrapping

Water your plants one to two days before the move so that the soil is moist but not wet. Wet pots are heavy, drip onto furniture and boxes, and can go mouldy in a warm vehicle. Do not repot shortly before the move, because the change means extra stress for the plant.

Tie long shoots and leaves loosely together. Wrap large plants in packing paper or an old sheet, put small pots in open boxes and fill the gaps with newspaper. Film is unsuitable in summer because heat and moisture build up underneath it. Handle cacti with thick gloves or a folded newspaper.

Transport in the heat: last in, first out

On moving day the plants wait in the shade, for example in the hallway, and are loaded last. At the destination they are the first to come out again. That way they spend as little time as possible in the cargo space, which heats up in the sun. Never leave plants in a parked car.

In the new flat, first put the plants in a bright spot, but not in blazing sun, and only water once the soil has started to dry. Some species, such as the weeping fig, react to the change of location by shedding leaves – this is usually temporary. You will find more tips in the article Moving plants.
