Long-Distance Move Berlin – Alkmaar: Route Registration, Duration

From Berlin to Alkmaar
Long-distance move to Alkmaar: via the A30 to Noord-Holland
Guide
A move to Alkmaar covers around 687 km: from Berlin-Moabit via the A2 and the A30 to the border at Bad Bentheim, then on the Dutch A1 towards Amsterdam and north via the Amsterdam ring road. There are no customs on this route – like Germany, the Netherlands is part of the EU, and household goods are not cleared at the border. The formalities after arrival matter more: anyone staying longer than four months registers with the municipality (gemeente) in the Personal Records Database (Basisregistratie Personen) within five days. We take care of packing, transport and reassembly.
By lorry we allow about 11 hours including statutory breaks. Because a driver may drive for no more than 9 hours a day, we travel with two drivers or stay overnight on the way. The lorry pays tolls in Germany and, since July 2026, in the Netherlands too; this is shown in the quote. For Alkmaar's city centre (Binnenstad) the removal van needs an exemption (ontheffing) via P1. Our home removal services also include a furniture lift and assembly; more on cross-border moves can be found under International removal.

We drive – registration and the exemption we plan together

What to do before and after moving day
With an international move within the EU there is no customs clearance and no declaration of value for household goods. More important are the deadlines of the Gemeente Alkmaar and access to the city centre – you should know these points before moving day.

Deregistering in Berlin
Part loads – the clever solution
For smaller volumes a shared load to Alkmaar is an affordable option: your belongings travel with other consignments via the A30 to the Netherlands. Delivery takes place within a time window; if the van has to enter the city centre, we coordinate the exemption accordingly.

Moving
& transport from a single source
A successful long-distance move to Alkmaar depends less on papers for the border than on planning before and after: deregistering in Berlin, an exemption for the city centre, an appointment with the municipality to register in the BRP and Dutch health insurance. Driving time and driving hours determine whether the van arrives the same evening or the next morning. How Alkmaar's districts differ is explained in our guide Moving to Alkmaar: costs and districts; all the papers for the Netherlands are in the checklist for the Netherlands.

Frequent questions
Customs and formalities when moving to the Netherlands
As the Netherlands is a member of the EU, there is no customs clearance for home removals: your household goods are not declared at the border and you do not need an export certificate. An inventory list is still useful – for planning and to record the condition of the furniture on arrival. A car you bring with you may be exempt from the Dutch BPM tax if you owned and used it for at least six months before the move.
After arrival you register with the Gemeente Alkmaar in the Basisregistratie Personen if you are staying longer than four months. You then receive your citizen service number (BSN) automatically; you need it for banking, work and insurance.
Special features and costs of a move to Alkmaar
Alkmaar's city centre has narrow streets and canals, and many houses have narrow staircases. For heavy furniture we therefore plan a furniture lift and choose the van size according to access. For the closed-off city centre and zones with parking charges, the removal van needs an exemption via P1.
The cost of a move to Alkmaar depends on the volume, distance and extra services such as packing or furniture assembly; tolls and a second driver are added. After the survey we give you a fixed price listing these items.
This is what your move really costs
- 1 room: from €369
- 2 rooms: from €579
- 3 rooms: from €879
- 4 rooms: from €1,329
- House/villa: individual quote
- Long-distance move: from €3.85/km

Understanding moving costs: the relevant criteria
The main cost drivers include the volume of your belongings, the distance (from €3.85/km), the number of floors and whether there is a lift. For a smooth process, a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) is also advisable. We additionally offer furniture assembly and shared loads.

From Berlin to Alkmaar: driving hours, papers and registration in the BRP
Alkmaar is in the Netherlands and therefore in the EU. According to German customs, you can bring goods for personal use or consumption duty-free from any EU country; cash of €10,000 or more must be declared if you are asked. EU social rules apply to the journey: a maximum of 9 hours' driving per day, a break of at least 45 minutes after no more than 4.5 hours, and at least 11 hours of daily rest. This determines whether the trip runs in one day or with an overnight stay.
After arrival, according to the Gemeente Alkmaar, you must register in the Personal Records Database (BRP) within 5 days if you are staying more than four months. You make the appointment by phone on 14 072; you attend in person, and when moving as a family every family member attends. Bring a valid passport or identity card and a copy of the purchase or rental contract together with the landlord's ID. If you live with someone else, the municipality requires the "Verklaring inwoning" form. If you were born abroad, bring your birth certificate.
Registration is free of charge, and processing takes no more than four weeks. You receive the citizen service number (BSN) automatically after registration. According to the government portal Nederlandwereldwijd, you must have health insurance within 4 months of arrival. Further steps are explained in our guide to customs and formalities for the Netherlands.
Access in Alkmaar: exemption for the city centre and public ground
According to the municipality, Alkmaar is divided into five areas: Noord, Oost, Zuid, West and Centrum. Access to the centre is regulated: anyone wishing to drive a removal van into the closed-off city centre or into zones with parking charges and residents' parking needs an exemption (ontheffing), according to the municipality. Moves from or into the city centre, including with a removal company, are handled by the operator P1 (alkmaar.parkeer.nl).
The municipality gives no fixed deadline for this P1 exemption. Other exemptions, by contrast, you apply for at the municipality itself, online with DigiD or eHerkenning – for example if a large vehicle is to park on the public road. There the kentekenhouder, the person named in the vehicle registration document, submits the application, and according to the municipality the decision comes within 10 working days to 6 weeks. So plan early and clarify in advance who submits which application for the lorry.
If containers, scaffolding or cranes occupy public ground, an environmental permit for the use of public space is also required. Private individuals should apply at least 10 working days before the start, companies at least 6 weeks. The basic fee is €110.00; mobile cranes and aerial work platforms must be applied for by a crane company.
