There are many aspects to consider around a move, from dissolving a household and re-registering to furniture assembly. Especially with a long-distance move to another city or federal state, additional factors such as travel times and temporary storage play an important role. Weeks 8 to 5: the planning phase
In the first four weeks you lay the foundation for a smooth move. Get several quotes, arrange a survey appointment and secure a date with your moving company early, especially if your preferred date falls at the turn of a month. At the same time it is worth starting a first decluttering session and selling, donating or disposing of items you no longer need.
Also clarify early on whether a parking restriction zone needs to be applied for at the new or old address, so that there is enough room for the removal van on moving day – in Berlin the road traffic authority expects around four weeks' processing time. Anyone planning a long-distance move should also keep an eye on the notice periods for the current flat and registration deadlines at the new place of residence.
Weeks 4 to 1: the final stretch and moving day
In the busiest phase it is all about practical implementation: getting moving boxes, packing and labelling systematically, and switching contracts for electricity, internet and insurance. Set up the mail forwarding order now, and book an appointment at the citizens' office for the time after you move in: registration is due within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG), and you need to bring the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
