Toruń: a Gothic old town on the banks of the Vistula
Neighbourhoods, work, offices
Toruń is, alongside Bydgoszcz, one of the two capitals of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and lies in the broad valley of the Vistula. The medieval old town with its brick Gothic buildings has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997; Nicolaus Copernicus was born here in 1473, and his birthplace is now a museum. The Toruń gingerbread (pierniki) is also well known. With around 195,000 inhabitants, Toruń is a city where distances remain manageable; the university shapes the cityscape. The city area covers 115 km² on both sides of the river.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and bring your household goods to Toruń – around 454 kilometres via the A12, the Polish A2 and the S5 and S10 expressways. Our private move covers packing, transport and furniture assembly; we plan for narrow lanes and buildings without a lift in the old town. We also drive back to Germany as long-distance moves. We quote the fixed price after the survey; more destinations under service areas.

Before
the move to Toruń
A move to Toruń comes with a few particularities, such as the narrow access in the historic old town or registration at the municipal office, for which, according to gov.pl, EU citizens have 30 days. The Polish rental market, with deposits and its own contract types, also differs from the German system. We advise you on the date, permits from the MZD and the route for your furniture transport. That way your private move is plannable from the start.

Frequently asked questions about living in Toruń
Old town, suburbs, Podgórz: Toruń's districts
The historic centre consists of the Old Town (Stare Miasto) and New Town (Nowe Miasto) on the right bank of the Vistula – almost entirely medieval buildings with the town hall, churches and townhouses. For moves this means: narrow lanes, entry only with a permit from the MZD and paid parking around the old town. To the west lies Bydgoskie Przedmieście, the Bromberg suburb with period buildings and parks; next to it is Bielany, home to the campus of Nicolaus Copernicus University. To the north and east follow Chełmińskie Przedmieście, Jakubskie Przedmieście and Mokre.
Large housing estates can be found in Rubinkowo and Na Skarpie in the east, detached houses and new builds in Wrzosy in the north, for example. On the left bank lie Podgórz, with views of the old town, Rudak and Stawki; since the new Vistula bridge between Winnica and Rudak, the banks have been better connected. Altogether Toruń has 24 districts.
Working, studying and living in Toruń
Among others, Krajowa Spółka Cukrowa, one of Poland's largest sugar producers, the pharmaceutical wholesaler Neuca and the ambulance manufacturer Baus AT are based in Toruń; in addition there are public administration and voivodeship authorities. Nicolaus Copernicus University (UMK) is one of Poland's largest universities and attracts many students. We do not quote rents here because they vary greatly by district, year of construction and fittings; the Polish portals show current offers.
In everyday life Toruń scores with short distances, trams and buses run by the municipal MZK, cycle paths along the Vistula and a cultural programme around Copernicus and the gingerbread tradition. The main station, Toruń Główny, lies on the left bank of the Vistula opposite the old town, and the city station on the eastern edge of the old town. Via the A1 motorway, which crosses the Vistula south of the city, you can reach Gdańsk and Łódź.

Toruń (Thorn): the MZD road authority, permits and lorry rules
The municipal roads in Toruń (Thorn) are managed by the Miejski Zarząd Dróg (MZD), ul. Grudziądzka 159, 87-100 Toruń, which can be reached Monday to Friday from 7 to 15. For occupying road space ("zajęcie pasa drogowego"), the MZD describes a fixed procedure. The page does not explicitly mention moves, so if in doubt ask in advance on 56 66 93 113 or at [email protected].
This is what the MZD requires for this permit:
- The application should be received no later than 14 days before the planned use.
- A detailed site plan at a scale of 1:1,000 or 1:500 must be attached and, if traffic is affected, also an approved traffic management plan.
- According to the MZD, there is no stamp duty for the application itself. A power of attorney costs 17 złoty.
- Processing takes up to 30 days, in particularly complex cases up to two months. You may only enter or occupy the area once the decision has been issued.
For large vehicles the following also applies: according to the MZD, entry into Toruń for vehicles over 18 tonnes is restricted between 6 and 9 and between 13 and 19, unless an MZD permit has been granted. We discuss which vehicle size we will use during planning. Read more about the process in the guide long-distance move to Poland and under long-distance move.
Stare Miasto in Toruń: entry permit, parking zones and registration
For the old town (Stare Miasto) of Toruń, the MZD is also the point of contact for entry permits. For permits to enter the Starówka, the MZD gives the number 56 66 93 138 and the address [email protected]. According to the MZD, permits are collected on working days between 7 and 14. The page does not give detailed rules on access and fees, so confirm your access by phone.
Paid parking applies around the old town. According to the MZD page, charges apply in the zones Monday to Friday from 8 to 18, and in the Śródmiejska Strefa Płatnego Parkowania (central paid parking zone) also on Saturdays since 1 June 2021. For the first hour there, the MZD states 7.30 złoty. Without a parking ticket, the additional charge is 92 złoty. As alternatives, the MZD lists, among others, the underground car park at the CSW (3 złoty per hour or part thereof) and the Park&Ride sites on ul. Olimpijska 42 and ul. Dziewulskiego 38. Anyone living permanently in the zone pays, according to the MZD, 41 złoty a month for the residents' subscription; a reserved parking space ("koperta") costs considerably more depending on the zone.
After moving in, according to gov.pl, EU citizens register their residence at the municipal office no later than the 30th day. Registration is free of charge. Further information on the route can be found in the guide furniture transport to Poland.
