Lucerne by neighbourhood: where you will live and how the move gets there

Neighbourhoods and living
Lucerne between the lake, the Reuss and Littau
Which neighbourhood suits you?
Lucerne has around 86,000 inhabitants and since 2023 has been divided into two city parts, six city districts and 27 neighbourhoods (Quartiere). The Reuss divides the city centre into the old town and the new town, linked by the Seebrücke, Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), Rathaussteg, Reussbrücke and Spreuerbrücke. On the right bank of the lake lie neighbourhoods such as Würzenbach and Halde, on the right bank of the Reuss Wesemlin and Maihof, and to the left of the Reuss Reussbühl and Udelboden; since the merger in 2010, Littau has also been part of the city. More about our home move.
For moving day, the location is decisive: the old town is a pedestrian zone with a delivery window from 6 to 10 am, residents' parking zones apply in many places, and the city reserves parking spaces for the removal van for a fee if the application is received at least four working days in advance. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), plan access and carrying routes after the survey and then quote a fixed price; your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB. The route and customs are explained on the page Moving Berlin – Lucerne.

What matters when moving in Lucerne
Delivery window, parking space, stairwell
Lucerne is densely built: according to Wikipedia, around 200 people per hectare live in the Neustadt/Voltastrasse neighbourhood, and vehicle traffic is prohibited in principle in the old town. That is why we clarify in advance whether your address can be reached within the delivery window, whether an exemption permit is needed and where the lorry may stop. The city of Lucerne reserves parking spaces for a fee and puts up the signs itself. For old buildings with narrow stairwells we plan in extra carrying time, and we quote the fixed price after the survey.

Six city districts, briefly explained
Lucerne is divided into city districts (Stadtkreise) A to F. These six points show how different the locations are – from the lakeside promenade to the Littauerberg. Regardless of this, we calculate the transport after a survey with a fixed price.

B: Right bank of the Reuss
C: City centre
D: Left lakeside
E: Left bank of the Reuss
F: Littau

What
to check before signing the tenancy agreement
Before you sign in Lucerne, it is worth checking three things: is the flat in a residents' parking zone, does a delivery window apply, and how far is it to the nearest bus or S-Bahn stop? According to the city, a residents' parking permit costs 60 francs a month, and household waste and bulky waste are collected by the street inspectorate according to the waste calendar. After moving in, you register within 14 days via eUmzugCH or at the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste). For transport from Berlin there is our long-distance move.

From Wesemlin to Littau: Lucerne's neighbourhoods
The city centre (district C) comprises Altstadt/Wey, Bruch/Gibraltar, Hirschmatt/Kleinstadt, Bahnhof/Werft, Neustadt/Voltastrasse and Unterlachen/Tribschen. This is where Lucerne is most densely populated: according to Wikipedia, around 200 people per hectare live in the Neustadt/Voltastrasse neighbourhood. The old town with the Chapel Bridge and the Weinmarkt is a pedestrian zone; Tribschen lies on the lakeshore south of the station.
On the right bank of the Reuss come Wesemlin/Dreilinden, Maihof/Rotsee and Bramberg/St. Karli, and on the right lakeside Würzenbach and Halde. To the left of the Reuss lie Basel-/Bernstrasse, Udelboden, Reussbühl and Ruopigen, and on the left lakeside Gütsch, Obergrund/Allmend and Langensand/Matthof. Since 2010, Littau with Matt, Littau Dorf, An der Emme and the Littauerberg has been part of the city. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and whether you have a car.
Employers, universities and the housing market in Lucerne
We deliberately do not quote reliable current rent figures; compare listings yourself and factor in service charges and a parking permit. In Lucerne, people work mainly in the service sector, which accounts for around 90 per cent of employees; about a fifth of jobs depend on the public sector. Organisations that have or had their headquarters in Lucerne include SUVA, the health insurers CSS and Concordia, the dairy company Emmi and the Bucherer Group; the Lucerne Cantonal Hospital is the largest central hospital in Switzerland.
You can study at the University of Lucerne, founded in 2000, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) and the University of Teacher Education. In your free time, Lake Lucerne, Mount Pilatus, the KKL with the Lucerne Festival and the Lucerne Fasnacht – the carnival with the most participants in Switzerland – are on the doorstep. With trains, the S-Bahn and the VBL trolleybuses, you can get around well without a car.

Moving to Lucerne: parking space reservation for the removal van
If you want to load directly in front of the building in Lucerne, you reserve the parking spaces with the city. According to stadtluzern.ch, the application must be submitted via the online form at least 4 working days in advance. The city lists these prices for the parking reservation for moves (Parkplatzreservation Umzug), including VAT:
- CHF 110.00 for 1 to 3 parking spaces on one day,
- CHF 150.00 for 1 to 3 parking spaces on one day at two different locations (old and new address),
- CHF 10.00 for each additional parking space.
According to the city, the flat fee covers coordinating the order and putting up and removing the signs. The invoice is sent to the new home address after the move. Note the restrictions: the city cannot guarantee that spaces in zones with long-term parking cards will be free (information: Lucerne police, +41 41 248 81 17). For insurance reasons, no vehicles are moved or towed away in Lucerne, and the flat fee is also charged for spaces that are not used or only partly used.
Only reserve once the date and address are fixed, as the flat fee is charged even if the spaces are not used. The prices can also be viewed at parkplatzreservation.stadtluzern.ch; the city's traffic engineering team answers questions at [email protected]. How we prepare the transport from Berlin is described in our guide to the long-distance move to Switzerland.
Lucerne: old town access, registration and customs for your belongings
According to the city of Lucerne, the old town is a pedestrian zone and closed to all vehicle traffic. Goods deliveries are allowed from Monday to Saturday between 06:00 and 10:00; all other times require an exemption permit. Since 1 December 2025, access permits and parking permits for the old town can be obtained online via parkingpay.ch. If you are moving into the old town, you should therefore clarify access before fixing the date. If you are bringing a car: according to the city, residents with their main residence in zones A to U receive a parking permit for one vehicle registered in their name (CHF 60 per month or CHF 600 per year); anyone with a private parking space is excluded.
After moving in, according to the city of Lucerne, you report the change of residence within 14 days. The city recommends the eUmzugCH platform; alternatively there is an online form. You should bring:
- certificate of origin (Heimatschein) or foreign national's ID card,
- passport or identity card,
- tenancy agreement or flat confirmation,
- health insurance card or policy.
The residents' services are at Obergrundstrasse 1, 6003 Lucerne (phone +41 41 208 83 56). At customs: for duty-free removal goods, the BAZG requires form 18.44; the declaration is made directly on entry. Read the details in the article Moving to Switzerland: customs and process and in the checklist for Switzerland.
