From Berlin to Schaffhausen: customs 795 km and schedule

Long-distance moving guide
Berlin – Schaffhausen: border, customs and arrival
Route and paperwork
A move to Schaffhausen crosses a real customs border, because Switzerland is not part of the EU. For your household goods this means: declaration on entry with Form 18.44, an inventory list and the condition that you actually move your residence to Switzerland. We plan the long-distance move so that loading day, journey and customs office fit together, and we take care of packing, transport and assembly. That way your furniture arrives in the city on the Rhine without anything missing at the border.
From the first survey to assembly in your new flat, you have one fixed contact person. Besides the classic private move we handle business moves and part loads. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we openly include customs time, driving limits and the heavy vehicle charge. We are based in Berlin and move people nationwide and abroad; the route in detail can be found under Berlin – Schaffhausen.

What we clarify for the journey to Schaffhausen
Customs office, drivers, access
With 795 kilometres and a customs border, planning is what counts: we decide whether two drivers can cover the route in one day, choose the customs office according to the opening hours of the BAZG (Federal Office for Customs and Border Security) and observe the Swiss night and Sunday driving ban for heavy lorries. The fixed price applies after the survey without renegotiation. Your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin; further destinations can be found under locations.

loading day to the residents' registration office
A long-distance move abroad begins with giving notice on the old flat and ends with registration at the residents' registration office. In between come the customs declaration of your belongings, importing the car and deregistering in Berlin. Because customs offices have fixed office hours and heavy lorries may not drive in Switzerland at night or on Sundays, we set the arrival day carefully. That way your move to Schaffhausen goes ahead without waiting at the border.

Frequently asked questions about the Berlin – Schaffhausen route
Customs when moving to Switzerland: Form 18.44
As Switzerland is not part of the EU, you declare your household goods to customs on entry. The basis is Form 18.44 for removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut): furniture and personal items remain duty-free if you have used them yourself for at least six months and continue to use them. The most important condition is that you actually move your residence to Switzerland; citizens of EU and EFTA states prove this with a tenancy or employment contract, for example.
An inventory list is also required. General information such as the number of boxes is sufficient, while valuables, appliances and alcohol are listed in more detail. Anything that does not meet the conditions goes on a list of goods subject to duty. We prepare the documents with you so that nothing is missing at the customs office.
The route: 795 km from Berlin-Moabit to the High Rhine
From Stromstraße it is around 795 kilometres to Schaffhausen according to OpenStreetMap routing: via the A9 to Nuremberg, the A6 towards Heilbronn and the A81 via Stuttgart to Gottmadingen, then via Thayngen onto the Swiss A4. For a lorry that is a good ten hours of pure driving time, around twelve with breaks.
Because EU driving-time rules usually allow nine hours a day and heavy lorries in Switzerland are banned from driving at night from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on Sundays, we plan an overnight stop before the border or two drivers. We schedule customs clearance within the customs office's office hours. With the lorry we use the lorry lane there; according to the BAZG, advance notification to customs is not necessary. At the destination we clarify the parking space with the city police in advance. We also handle the return route Schaffhausen – Berlin.

Schaffhausen: customs clearance of your belongings on entry
Switzerland is not part of the EU. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) describes the following for your belongings: advance notification is not necessary; you report to a competent customs office during office hours on entry. With a lorry you use the lorry lane. Clearance is usually possible from Monday to Friday, and at some large customs offices also on Saturday mornings. The BAZG lists the locations and opening hours of customs offices online.
- You need the signed Form 18.44 for duty-free import.
- The inventory list may be on ordinary paper; general information such as the number of boxes is sufficient, while valuables, appliances and restricted goods such as alcohol must be listed in more detail.
- Goods that do not qualify for the duty exemption go on a list of goods subject to duty.
- The most important condition is moving your residence to Switzerland; the items must have been used by you personally for at least 6 months.
Schaffhausen lies directly on the German border. We decide which customs office to use for your journey based on the BAZG opening hours and your date. For vehicles over 3.5 t the BAZG mentions a night ban (10 p.m. to 5 a.m.) and a Sunday and public holiday driving ban, as well as the heavy vehicle charge. All customs steps at a glance can be found in our article Moving to Switzerland: customs, formalities and process.
Schaffhausen: residents' registration office, signage and districts
In Schaffhausen, registration as a new resident is handled by the residents' registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle) at the Stadthaus (Stadthausgasse 12, 8201 Schaffhausen, telephone +41 52 632 52 75). The city gives counter opening hours of 8.00 to 11.30 a.m. and 2.00 to 5.00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and until 6.00 p.m. on Thursday; on Mondays the counter is closed in the morning. You can reserve a counter appointment online. On its online counter the city also offers the service Zuzug/Umzug/Wegzug (moving in, moving within, moving away).
On the question of how a removal van may stop on moving day: according to the city, the Schaffhausen city police (Stadtpolizei) are responsible, among other things, for permits on public land and for signage (Signalisation). You can reach the signage sub-department on +41 52 632 55 32. The city gives no information on deadlines and fees on the pages consulted; so ask early and have the conditions confirmed.
We plan the approach on moving day so that parking position, loading window and customs time fit together. Also keep your tenancy agreement, deregistration certificate and ID to hand so that registration after arrival goes smoothly. How we secure loading zones is described under parking restriction zone. We describe the individual neighbourhoods and their residential areas in the moving guide for Schaffhausen, and everyday questions after moving in in the guide for newcomers.
