Schaffhausen: Old Town Buchthalen, Herblingen – where to live?

Schaffhausen guide
Schaffhausen: oriel windows, the Munot and quiet neighbourhoods on the High Rhine
Neighbourhoods, housing, daily life
Schaffhausen combines an Old Town with around 300 oriel windows and the Munot fortress on the Emmersberg with industry and watchmaking. For a move to Schaffhausen this means: in the Old Town lanes are narrow and stairwells tight, while in neighbourhoods such as Herblingen or Buchthalen it is more about parking position and floor. We plan your private move according to the address and take care of packing, transport and assembly. More about our services can be found under private move.
Whether you are moving to Georg Fischer, IWC or another employer: we are based in Berlin and move people nationwide and abroad. Our long-distance moving guide describes customs and the route; this article is about life in the city. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and your household goods are covered by liability under the HGB. Further destinations under locations.

What we clarify before moving day in Schaffhausen
Parking space, stairwell, customs
Schaffhausen's Old Town is characterised by houses with oriel windows and narrow lanes, and the city police (Stadtpolizei) are responsible for a parking space on public land. We clarify these points before the appointment, as well as stairwell, lift and carrying route. Planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source; your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB (€620 per m³), and the fixed price applies after the survey. We are based in Berlin and move people nationwide and to Switzerland; for long routes, see our page on long-distance moves.

Schaffhausen
for newcomers
A move to Schaffhausen raises its own questions: in the Old Town lanes and stairwells are narrow, and the city police are responsible for the removal van's parking space. In neighbourhoods such as Herblingen, Buchthalen or the Breite it is more about parking position and lift. On top of that come customs, registration within 14 days and health insurance within three months. We plan moving day accordingly, whether you are moving out of a student flat or a detached house.

Frequently asked questions about living in Schaffhausen
An overview of Schaffhausen's neighbourhoods
The Old Town, with around 300 oriel windows, is the heart of the city; above it to the east, the Munot towers on the Emmersberg. For moves, the Old Town is demanding because of its narrow lanes. The Breite is a residential neighbourhood with the KSS leisure park, outdoor and indoor pools and an ice rink.
Buchthalen in the east was a municipality in its own right until 1946 and is today a popular residential neighbourhood. Herblingen in the north-east joined in 1964, and the industrial area lies in the Herblingertal. Hemmental, north of the city, has been part of it since 2009 and is rural in character.
Living, working and commuting in Schaffhausen
We deliberately do not quote reliable current rents for Schaffhausen here; compare offers and pay attention to service charges and deposit. Companies such as Georg Fischer, IWC, Cilag, ABB and Garmin have their headquarters or a branch in Schaffhausen.
The railway station is operated by SBB and Deutsche Bahn: SBB runs via Bülach to Zurich and to Winterthur, DB to Singen and Basel. The A4 links the city with Winterthur. The Rhine Falls lie 2.5 km downstream in Neuhausen. Together with its agglomeration, which includes Neuhausen and municipalities in the canton of Zurich, Schaffhausen is the centre of the canton; distances remain short, and you can reach many destinations by bike or bus.

Signage and parking on moving day in Schaffhausen
In Schaffhausen the city police (Stadtpolizei) are responsible for all signage and for stationary traffic. According to stadt-schaffhausen.ch, they also handle permits for the use of public land. They are located at Fronwagplatz 24 (Postfach 1000, 8201 Schaffhausen), telephone +41 52 632 57 55; the signage department (Signalisation) has the number +41 52 632 55 32. The overview page does not give deadlines, fees or access rules for the Old Town, so ask as early as possible.
For traffic engineering questions, the Traffic and Civil Engineering staff unit (Stabsstelle Verkehr und Tiefbau) at the Stadthaus (Stadthausgasse 12, telephone +41 52 632 57 06) is also responsible. Among other things, it accepts applications for road excavations and issues traffic engineering opinions. The Stadthaus is generally open (the counter hours of the residents' registration office differ, see below) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 17:00, and on Thursdays until 18:00.
A practical order of steps:
- First clarify access and the parking space with the city police and have the vehicle size to hand.
- Plan bulky items with the city's waste disposal service (telephone +41 52 632 53 29), which runs collection points and provides information on services and fees.
- Check the customs documents before travelling if your household goods are coming from Germany.
We explain our route and customs notes for Switzerland in the long-distance moving guide for Schaffhausen. Background on everyday life can be found in the article Living in Schaffhausen.
Registering in Schaffhausen: 14-day deadline and documents
According to stadt-schaffhausen.ch, anyone moving to the city must report the move to the residents' registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle) within 14 days (Art. 89 (1) of the cantonal Municipalities Act). For arrivals from abroad, the city lists the following documents:
- Identity card or passport
- Birth certificate or equivalent document
- Proof of Swiss health insurance, due within three months of arrival
- Tenancy or purchase agreement
- Proof of custody for unmarried parents or single parents with minor children
According to the city, the eUmzug online route is not available for arrivals from abroad. The residents' registration office is at Stadthausgasse 12. It is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 8:00 to 11:30 and 14:00 to 17:00, on Thursdays from 8:00 to 11:30 and 14:00 to 18:00, on Fridays from 8:00 to 11:30 and 14:00 to 17:00, and on Mondays from 14:00 to 17:00. On Monday mornings appointments are only available by prior arrangement by phone (+41 52 632 52 75). Counter appointments can be reserved online.
According to the BAZG, people moving from EU-27 and EFTA states do not need an assurance of a residence permit to import their household goods; the change of residence can be proven with an employment or tenancy contract, for example. We provide helpers to assemble your furniture through our furniture assembly service.
