Splitting moving costs in a shared flat: per head by volume or by room

Money in the shared flat
One invoice, several payers – how the shared flat splits fairly
Calculated transparently
A shared-flat move brings together several people, rooms of different sizes and unequal amounts of belongings – and in the end an invoice that has to be split. It is easiest if the shared flat decides on the model before the quote arrives. As part of our Private move offer, we record each room separately, so the shared flat can see who has how much volume. After the survey, we give you a fixed price.
We record every room in the shared flat individually so that furniture, boxes and special requests can be assigned – the basis for splitting by volume. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. If not everyone moves out at the same time, we charge separate dates individually. That spares the shared flat discussions about who pays what.

Fixed price after a survey for your shared flat
One figure everyone knows
After the free survey, we give you a fixed price – so all flatmates know what to expect before moving day. The shared flat handles the split according to its own model. That keeps the shared-flat move predictable and fair for each individual.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we make splitting the costs easier
Volume per room made visible
For a shared flat to split fairly, it needs to know how much each person is taking. That is why we record the furniture in each room separately during the survey and then give you a fixed price. If flatmates move out on different days, we plan the dates individually. Your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB, and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive nationwide – you will find destinations with their own page under Locations. How the shared flat then splits the cost is up to them.

How the shared flat splits the fixed price
There is no legally correct model – only one that everyone agrees on beforehand. These six points help you settle the shared-flat move fairly and not forget any costs.

A part load instead of a share of the lorry
Anyone moving to another city with few household goods often pays less with a part load than their share of the joint lorry. You will find more on long routes under Long-distance moves.

What
has to be paid besides the transport
A shared-flat move is not only about the transport price: boxes, the no-parking zone, final cleaning, renovation materials and the last rent for an empty room also belong on the bill. Decide which of these costs are shared and which everyone pays themselves. Anyone taking only a little often travels more cheaply with a part load. You can also book individual rooms through our Private move service.

Frequently asked questions on splitting costs in a shared-flat move
Three models for splitting the moving price
There are three common models for splitting the costs of a shared-flat move: per head (simple but imprecise), by volume (accurate but time-consuming) or by room with an equal share for the kitchen and living room (the middle way).
The basis is the fixed price we give you after the survey. If the model is agreed beforehand, the shared flat only has to do the maths – and writes the result on a sheet that everyone signs.
What else belongs on the bill
Besides the transport, moving out of a shared flat involves further costs: boxes and packing material, a no-parking zone if needed, cleaning products or a final cleaning, and materials for repairs. If not everyone moves out at the same time, rent for an empty room may also be due.
Decide which of these items are shared. Whether the flat has to be painted depends on the tenancy agreement – check this before you buy paint. That way the shared-flat move stays transparent for everyone.
The prices as the basis for the split
Fair and transparent prices matter to us. That is why our quotes for a 1-room flat start at just €365. For 2 rooms the price is €584, for 3 rooms €905 and for 4 rooms €1,289. For a house or villa we prepare an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €4.15/km. Arrange a free survey to receive your personal quote.
What goes into the moving price – and who causes it
The price is made up of the volume, the distance (from €4.15/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. A required no-parking zone is also taken into account. Additional options such as furniture assembly and a part load are also available.
